APPLETON-LE-MOORS

History Group - A talk by Dr Jon Finch called Navvies, Pals and PoWs: the archaeology of Breary Banks Camp, Colsterdale was attended by about 30 people. Tea and cakes were provided by Shirley Brooke, Maggie Tebb and Lesley Jones.

Bishop Hagg Wood - The latest work task as part of Appleton & Spaunton Community Interest Company’s management of Bishop Hagg Wood was held on Saturday. The next work task will be held on Saturday, March 31 at 10am. The permissive footpath through the wood will be closed for safety reasons until Tuesday, May 1.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service this Sunday at All Saints is 11am Holy Communion. The annual Women’s World Day of Prayer service for the area will take place at Snainton Methodist Church on Friday, at 2pm. It is an ecumenical service and open to all. There will be refreshments afterwards. During March the Upper Derwent Benefice Lent Group will meet on Mondays at the Downe Arms with an optional supper at 6.30pm and the study group at 7.30pm.

Domino drive - There were 11 full tables for the domino drive organised by David and Elaine Mudd which made a profit of £147 for the village hall. The winner was Rob Colley with 118 closely followed by Edrene Rumley with 116 and Elsie Massheder with 114. Ashley Mudd was fourth with 110. Supper was prepared and served by Anne Tidd and Di Ford. The next domino drive, also in aid of the village hall will be on Thursday, March 22 at 7.30pm. As it will be the last domino drive of the season, the winners of the accumulator will be announced.

It’s a farce - Brompton-by-Sawdon Radio Players will be performing a new comedy, written by Marcel Guillou, called Tour De Farce, in Brompton Village Hall on Friday, March 9 at 8pm and Saturday, March 10 at 7.30pm. Tickets for the show, which is also known as Bunty Rides Again, are available from Marylyn Muir, phone 01723 850412. They are priced at £7.50 and include a buffet supper. There will be a licensed bar available together with soft drinks. It is not suitable for children.

CROPTON

Village hall - The next monthly coffee morning is on Tuesday, March 6 from 10.30am. The following day (Wednesday, March 7), the village hall AGM will be held at 7pm. The next event is on Friday, March 9 at 7.30pm when Steve and Carol Robson of acoustic band Fools Gold return to the hall to perform a First World War commemoration show called Beat the Drum. It will include tales, songs, images and videos.

EAST AYTON

Table top sale - There will be a table top sale in the village hall on Sunday, from 9am to noon. To reserve a table phone Joy on 01723 862170. Refreshments will be served all morning.

AGM - Ayton Village Hall management committee will hold its annual general meeting on Thursday, March 8 at 7pm in the back room.

GILLING EAST

Bric-a-brac - There will be a bric-a-brac sale in the village hall on Saturday at 10am with all proceeds going towards the village hall restoration fund.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - There will be a family quiz in aid of St Chad’s Church in the Crown Inn on Sunday at 8.30pm. Entry is £2 and includes a sandwich supper. The prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Dancing show - The Sarah Louise Ashworth Dance School is holding its bi-annual showcase at Lady Lumley’s School, Pickering, on Saturday, March 17 at 5.15pm and Sunday, March 18 at 2pm and 5.30pm. The show involves a trip around the world, musical theatre highlights and the comic ballet La Fille mal gardee. Tickets are £5, children £4, under 2s free but require a ticket. Allotments AGM - Twenty-six members of Kirkbymoorside Allotment Association attended its annual general meeting on Monday, February 19. Annual subscriptions were taken by Mrs J Lishman. The retiring chairman, Carol Messham, gave her report and thanked Mr J Farrow for all his work at the allotment over many years. Mr S Lonsdale was awarded the Nobel Lishman Shield for all his work ordering the seeds. Mrs T Mirams is the new chairman. There is a waiting list for available plots. Coffee morning - The monthly All Saints coffee morning will be held in the church on Saturday from 9.30am to noon.

Bridge club - Mary Mortenson and Chris Baxter won the latest game at North/South with 57 per cent. Barry Smith and Bob Wardell were runners-up on 55 per cent. East/West winners were Anne Smith and Graeme Matthew with 60 per cent. Christine Brett and Clarissa Napier were second with 58 per cent. Play of the week went to Tim and Lesley Vessey.

Messy Church - The February Messy Church session took Thy Kingdom Come as its theme. Activities included bread making and seed planting to represent growth, paper models to show worship of God and picture painting to show being part of a Christian Fellowship centred around Jesus. Sara Paxton led the songs, Steve Helm the learning activity and Li Bartrop the prayers. The shared meal was prepared by Cathryn Nicholson and Joan Magson. The next Messy Church will be on Monday, March 19 from 4pm to 6pm, in the Methodist Church.

Band concert - Kirkbymoorside Brass Band’s concert in the Memorial Hall on Sunday, March 11 at 7.30pm will feature the senior, community and junior bands with a preview of the national area test piece Odyssey. Tickets are £5 and are available from JRA Computer Services, Summit Bakery or email bandmanager@kirkbyband.co.uk Lent lunches - Churches Together in Kirkbymoorside are hosting a series of lunches during Lent on the theme The Seven Last Words from the Cross. Reflections will be led by different speakers followed by a soup lunch. The lunches will be held at noon at the Methodist Church. The remaining dates and groups are Tuesday, March 6, Methodist; and Tuesday, March 13, Roman Catholic. All donations will go to Water Aid.

Tuesday Group - Members will meet in the Methodist Church Jubilee Room on Tuesday, March 13 for an evening with the Rev Penny Worth. The leader is Sonja and Jean and Margaret are the tea hostesses.

Marie Curie - The Kirkbymoorside support group for Marie Curie is holding a street collection on Wednesday, March 7, from 9am to 2pm. Members of the group will also be in the Moorside Room in Church street serving coffee and tea. There will also be a cake stall and tombola. Admission is free. Barn dance – The village hall is the venue for a barn dance on Saturday at 7.30pm.

MALTON

Bridge club - There was a close finish in the latest round of Malton Bridge Club’s handicap pairs competition. Bryan Hone and Richard Hazlerigg won with 55.6 per cent while Mike Jackson and Rob Ashdown scored 55.5 per cent and Sheila Johnson and Gill Oxendale had 55.4 per cent. The Thursday afternoon social sessions are proving popular. Last week Judith and Tim Scott were the North-South winners ahead of Roger and Ruth Mattingly, while at East-West, John and Beryl Bramall led from Janet Sutor and Sue Shuttleworth. This week the event will start soon after 2.30pm rather than the usual 2pm.

Flower club - The February meeting of Malton and District Flower Club featured a talk by Peter Mathers called Municipal Marvels. Many memories were stirred by the presentation which traced the history of the public park and was illustrated by slides of local gardens and some further afield. Whisky tasting - Visitors will be able to sample five single malt whiskies provided by Jim McMullan of McMullans of Malton in the village hall on Saturday from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. Nibbles will be available and all profits from the evening will go towards the upgrade of the kitchen and toilet facilities in the hall. PICKERING

Fleamarket - Last year the town’s fleamarket in the Liberal Club, Smiddy Hill, raised £500 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance with its tombola and donations. The fleamarket and gift fair will return on Good Friday, March 30, and will be open for four days over the Easter weekend.

Fishkeepers - Ryedale Aquarist Society met at the home of members Sue and David Marshall last week to discuss how to breed a variety of catfish species. The next meeting will be held at the Marshalls home on Wednesday, March 14 at 7.30pm. The society will hold its open show at Kirbymisperton Village Hall on Sunday, April 29.

Global prayers - The service for this year’s Women’s World Day of Prayer will be held at Potter Hill Methodist Church, on Friday at 2pm. The service has been prepared by the women of Suriname and is called All God’s Creation is Very Good. It will be led by the Rev Ruth Duck and representatives from different denominations in the town will be taking part. Refreshments will be served at the close.

Information day - The Royal Voluntary Service is to hold a drop-in information day at the Hungate Centre, on Friday from 1pm to 3pm. The event will show the range of voluntary opportunities available. They will also have a table for anyone interested in starting up a group. The charity’s community development worker will be on hand to talk about how it can help with setting one up. There will be free teas and coffee.

Musical Memories - The RVS Hungate Centre is the venue for Musical Memories on Monday, March 12 from 11am to noon. The aim is to provide sessions where people can meet up with friends, old and new, to share in singing songs together, with the added benefit of a biscuit with a cuppa. A minimum voluntary contribution of £3 per person to include refreshments is requested.

No winners - Last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Super Draw was not won. The numbers were 4, 13 and 40. This week’s draw will be increased to £225.

Quiz - The Bay Horse, Market Place, will host a general knowledge quiz in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on Sunday at 7.30pm.

Bridge club - The fourth session of the handicapped pairs was won by Dorothy Cordery and Sue Hardman with 59.94 per cent. In second place were George Goodall and Anne Avery with 57.03 per cent with Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall third on 54.64 per cent.

RILLINGTON

Music evening - Michael and Teenie Harcus will be performing in the St Andrew’s Church rooms on Wednesday, March 7 at 7.30pm. Michael is a singer/songwriter from Westray in the Orkney Islands and with his wife, Teenie, is a favourite at the Whitby Gospel Music Convention. Light refreshments will be served. There is no charge for the event but donations are welcome.

Quiz time - Six teams playing for £54 took part in Jennie’s quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners with 58 points were Honeymooners, second were The Who and third, after a tie break with Gary’s Team, were Team @ The Bar. The £13.50 jackpot was won by The Who. Jennie’s next quiz will be on Friday, March 9.

SALTERSGATE

Air ambulance - Saltersgate Farmers Hunt invited Bilsdale Hunt to a joint meet at Lockton and a cap collection was taken raising £470. It is being donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance as a token of appreciation for the service they provided a few weeks ago when a Saltersgate member was taken critically ill and needed to be air-lifted to hospital. The person has now been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home.

SEAMER

Methodists - Bruce Clark took the service on Sunday and spoke of the immediacy of God and said that God is available to us all the time. The vestry steward was Bob Jackman and the welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the offering. Sheila Gray read the Lenten prayers and placed the symbol on the cross. Bible readings were given by Allan Dunnington, who read from Ephesians, and Margaret Neave, who read from John’s gospel. The service this Sunday at 10.30am has been prepared by members of the church. The Women’s World Day of Prayer service is on Friday at 2pm at Ayton Methodist Church. The speaker is the Rev Mary Jackman.
