APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Public meeting - A public meeting is to be called by the parish council to discuss fracking. It intends to establish a sub-committee to inform and advise on the issue. Letters have been sent to the two landowners who contribute financially to the parish charity donation. The next meeting of the parish council will be held on Thursday, March 1.

Slide show -The next Tea, Chat and History session will be at 2pm on Monday, February 5 and will include a new rolling slide show.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Local history - Brompton Local History Society’s first talk of the year will be given on Wednesday, February 7 at 7.30pm in the village hall when Gordon Clitheroe will give a talk called Changing Face of Pickering. A founder of the Beck Isle Museum, with which he is still involved, Mr Clitheroe has lived in Pickering for 70 years and produced four books about the town. Future talks will be on Rainciffe Wood and Brompton Castle Hill given by Trevor Pearson on Wednesday, March 7 and on Hackness by Sheila McGeown on Wednesday, April 4.

Green fingers - Members of Brompton and District Gardening Club will meet in the village hall on Wednesday, January 31 at 7.30pm. New members are welcome and the meetings cater for all levels of gardening expertise.

All Saints - The service on Sunday at All Saints will be Holy Communion using the Book of Common Prayer. It starts at 8am and will be conducted by the vicar.

CROPTON

Coffee morning - The first coffee morning of the year will be held in the village hall on Tuesday, February 6 from 10.30am to noon.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Marie Curie - Kirkbymoorside support group for Marie Curie raised a total of £28,818.78 during 2017. Since the group was formed in June 1999 a grand total of £390,492.58 has been raised to last month. The first fundraising event of 2018 is the daffodil day street collection and coffee day on Wednesday, March 7. The annual sponsored Farndale daffodil walk will take place on Saturday, March 24. Money raised during 2017 came daffodil coffee morning with street collection £922.37, sponsored Farndale daffodil walk £4,974.05, March daffodil appeal collection boxes £753.24, cake stall £300.75, Welburn Manor car boot sale £950.88, Sleightholme Dale open gardens and July teas £874.50, tombola stall at Ryedale Show £222.20, coffee day at Ryedale Garage £3,253.38, jumble sale and sale of books at Sheriff Hutton £2,841.90, sale of Christmas cards £308.75, autumn fair £248.95, Christmas market £384.25, static boxes from shops, pubs and garages £739.21, JMK memorial tractor run £4,050 and donations from all other sources, which included organisations, individuals, sporting events, anniversaries, dances and collections at funerals £7,994.35.

Menzown - Local naturalist Jim Prewess will be the speaker at the Menzown meeting in the King’s Head on Monday, February 12 at 7.30pm. New members are welcome.

Moorside Bar & Club - Colt Murphy will be the performer at the Moorside Bar & Club on Saturday. The following Saturday, February 3, the band Thru The Roof will be playing at the club with an entry fee of £3 for members and £4.50 for non-members. Both acts start at 8.30pm.

Camera Club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met at the Moorside Bar and Club for an illustrated talk by Wakefield-based commercial photographer John Gardner. He included images included weddings, portraiture, glamour and wil life. The club has a three-way competition with Scarborough Photographic Society and Malton Camera Club at Scarborough on Wednesday, January 31. The next KDCC meeting at the Moorside Club & Bar will be an architecture, record, sport, pastime competition on Thursday, February 1.

Messy Church - Increased numbers of children attended the recent meeting of Messy Church. They made models and crafts on the theme of the baptism of Jesus and played a fish game. Sara Paxton led the songs and Liz Bartrop the prayers. Joan Magson prepared the shared meal. The next Messy Church session will be in the Methodist Church on Monday, February 19 from 4pm to 6pm.

MALTON

Bridge club - In the first of two handicapped teams sessions at Malton Bridge Club, there was a win for the foursome of Anne Avery, Graeme Matthew, Madeleine Webber and Graham Burgess with 62 points. Runners-up were John and Beryl Bramall, Richard Hazlerigg and Bryan Hone with 42 points. The competition concludes this week.

Twigs and twine - Malton and District Flower Club’s meeting this month featured a demonstration by Nichola Davies called Twigs and Twine. It included both traditional and contemporary arrangements using blooms and unusual foliage in alternative containers. The emphasis was on texture and striking colour combinations. The next meeting is on Tuesday, February 20 when Peter Mathers will give a talk called Municipal Marvels. New members and visitors are always welcome. United service - A united service to mark the start of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will take place at St Michael’s Parish Church on Friday, March 19 at 7.30 pm. All seven local denominations - Anglicans, Baptists, Catholics, Elim Ryedale, Friends, Methodists and the Salvation Army – will be taking part. The guest preacher will be the Rev Leslie Newton, chairman of the Yorkshire North and East District of the Methodist Church. All are welcome to attend this important service in the church’s calendar. The Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity starts on Thursday, January 18 and finishes on Thursday, January 25. The tradition began 110 years ago. The dates chosen were from the church’s calendar for the feast of the confession of St Peter to the feast of the conversion of St Paul.

OLD MALTON

Ladies Fellowship - Stuart and Jane Brown from Kirkbymoorside spoke about the Rizik Children’ to members of the Ladies Fellowship of St Mary’s Priory earlier this month. Fellowship members learnt how parentless children in Kenya, many living on dumps, were rescued and placed in a children's home built by the charity along with the local community. The children are placed in a safe and loving home and have an education. They are taught to cook, clean, farm the land and grow most of their own food. Two underground water tanks have also been built to collect rainwater. A vote of thanks was given by Helen Morgan. The business meeting was held after coffee and biscuits. The raffle prize was donated by Daphne Smurthwaite.

PICKERING

Pilates - Instructor Wendy Harding will resume her pilates classes on Monday after a recent operation on her foot.

Bridge club - The latest session of duplicate bridge was won by Madeleine Webber and John Bramall with 66.67 per cent. In second place was Sue Pearson and Gill Hardcastle with 59.9 per cent. George Goodall and Anne Avery were third with 56.77 per cent.

Fishkeepers - Ryedale Aquarist Society members met at the home of Sue and David Marshall last week when members talked about their experiences with the breeding of a number of freshwater fishes. The next meeting will at the Marshall’s home on Wednesday, February 7 at 7.30pm.

Jazz festival - The sixth Ryedale Festival of Traditional Jazz which will be held from Sunday, July 22 to Saturday, July 28. If tickets are bought before Thursday, May 31 they cost £5 for the Sunday Spirituals concert and £50 for the Monday to Saturday concerts. Individual tickets for any of the Monday to Saturday concerts cost £10. After May 31 prices increase to £12 and £60 respectively. Domino drives - There will be a domino drive organised by Pickering Cricket Club at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Thursday February 1 at 7.30pm The Recreation Club will also host another domino drive on Friday, February 9 at 7.30pm.

Dementia support - Pickering Medical Practice will have a Dementia Support advisor in attendance from 10am to noon on Friday, February 2. Anyone concerned about dementia and would like to book an appointment should phone 01751 471296.

WEA talk - George Cromack will give a WEA talk called Silver Screen Gold at the Memorial Hall on Friday, February 2 at 7.30pm. There is no fee but a donation of £2 helps towards covering expenses.

PEEMS - Members of the Pickering Experimental Engineering and Model Society will meet on Wednesday, February 7 at the RVS Hungate Centre at 7pm. Visitors and guests are welcome.

Sight Support meal - Pickering and District Rotary Club is hosting a three-course meal at the Spice for U restaurant to raise money for Ryedale Sight Support Group. Family history - Ryedale Family History Group are offering free one to one sessions at the library on the following Tuesdays - January 30, February 13 and 27. The sessions are for anyone wishing to trace their ancestry and is either not sure where to start or needing some help to progress. The session times are 10.30am, noon and 1.30pm. Musical Memories - The RVS Hungate Centre is the venue for Musical Memories on Monday, February 12 from 11am to noon. The aim is to provide sessions where people can meet up with friends, old and new, to share in singing songs together, with the added benefit of a biscuit with a cuppa. Musical Memories is a community interest company and a not-for-profit company. A minimum voluntary contribution of £3 per person to include refreshments is requested.

Super draw - Dave Harrison won £300 in last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Super Draw. His winning numbers were 38, 7 and 11. This week’s draw will be for £75. RIEVAULX

On song - A record sum of £1,110.76 was raised by members and friends from the Methodist Church spent five evenings before Christmas carol singing around the houses in the villages of Rievaulx, Old Byland, Cold Kirby and Scawton and at the outlying farms in the area. Musical accompaniment was provided by Sheila Foster on the piano accordian. The money is to be divided equally between the Great North Air Ambulance and St Catherine’s Hospice, Scarborough.

RILLINGTON

Police meeting - Malton Rural East Community and Police Consultation Group will meet in Woodlands Community Centre at 7pm on Wednesday, January 31. It is an opportunity for members of the public to discuss local police related issues and meet local community and area police officers.

ROSEDALE

Annual meeting - Rosedale and District Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Society will hold its annual general meeting on Tuesday, January 30 at 7pm in the Reading Room. All interested are most welcome to attend.

Domino drive - The monthly domino drive will be held in the Reading Room on Thursday, January 18 at 7.30pm.

SEAMER

Methodist news -The Covenant service on Sunday was taken by Dr Rev Kevin Ridd. The organist was Doreen Lawson, the vestry steward was Bob Jackman and the welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the offering. Bible readings were given by Jim Lawson, who read from Deuteronomy, and Tina Greenley, who read from John’s gospel. In his sermon Dr Rev Ridd explained that a covenant is a mutual agreement and that today we are making an agreement with God to keep His commandments. During the service Holy Communion was observed. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Michael Earnshaw.

St Martin’s - The Rev Richard Firth, assisted by Kate Middleton, presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion on Sunday. Dot Francis and Gisa Moore were the sidespersons. The theme of the service was centred on the Week of Payer for Christian Unity. The theme for this year’s week of prayer was Freedom for All, which had been organised by the churches of the Caribbean, a reminder of the many whose lives face untold dangers and of a Christian church divided in itself and often missing the chances to make a difference. Rev Firth reminded the congregation that dissention, argument, and rejection can split churches and church communities with results that can detract congregations from their calling. During the service the children had activities in the church room led by Kim, Jean and Rachel, and later joined the congregation at the thanksgiving prayer for communion. They designed and wrote footprints on which they wrote what people can do to look after each other. Clare Firth served refreshments after the service. Lay preacher John Worthy led the 11am service of modern worship on Sunday and preached on the meaning of discipleship. He also led the intercessions. Helen Swallow read and the sung worship was led by John Grice with Sue Grice and John Taylor. Jenny and Duncan Bland ran the Sunday Club and Jo Taylor was the welcomer. Wendy Haslam served refreshments after the service.

SHERBURN

Quiz -The monthly quiz at the Community and Sorts Club will be held on Sunday at 8pm. It is £1 per person for to enter and is for teams of up to five people. A free light supper will be provided.

Anniverary lunch - Members of the Senior Citizen Luncheon Club met for its anniversary lunch. It has been meeting at Sherburn for 17 years and several years at Weaverthorpe before to that. Barbara organised a gardening quiz with an acrostic puzzle at the end that spelled out, Happy Birthday Luncheon Club. It was won by Janet’s table. Chris and Kay Miles stepped in to help at short notice. The next Luncheon club will be on Wednesday, February 21, meeting from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. St Hilda’s - The Rev Joe Kinsella will officiate at the Holy Communion service at St Hilda’s Church on Sunday at 9am.

United service - The Methodist and Anglican congregations met as one worshiping community in the chapel where they were welcomed by steward Liz Aconley, who also led prayers of praise and thanksgiving. The Call to Worship was led by Jean Brown. The organist was Chris Cade and guitarist Robin Magowan led a time of praise and worship. The theme of the service was Unity and Barbara Grice read to us from Corinthians the chapter entitled, ‘One body, many parts.’ The preacher, the Rev Joe Kinsella, spoke about how people must work as one. Jean Brown led the prayers of intercession and the opportunity was given to all to light a candle for anyone, or any situation where there was a need. Sandra Cade led the prayers of confession. India and Kiara Heron had made a long friendship chain which stretched right round the church and joined everyone together. It was held this as everyone sang our closing hymn, BindUus Together. Rev Kinsella closed with the blessing. Hannah Magowan, who came second in the Apprentice of the Year competition in electrical engineering, was congratulated on her success and a card of congratulation, signed by the congregation, was given to her. She received her award in London. Coffee was served after the service, followed by lunch. The next united service will be at St Hilda’s Church on Sunday, April 15 at 10.30am when the preacher will be the Dr Rev Kevin Ridd Methodist news - Donations at the Tuesday coffee mornings are to be given to the Circuit breakfast for the homeless held at Westborough Methodist Church. The service at Sherburn Chapel on Sunday at 10.30am will be the Methodist Covenant service and will include Holy Communion. The preacher will be the Minister, the Rev Dr Kevin Ridd.

SINNINGTON

Concert - Thornton-le-Dale Friends gave concert of sacred music to Sinnington People's Guild on Tuesday, January 16. Led by Mary Hoggarth, favourite gospel hymns were sung. Doug Finch gave the prayers and recitations were given by Kay Metcalf, Mary Hoggarth, Doug Finch and Margaret Hand. The singers and the congregational hymns were accompanied by John Woodmancey. A collection for the work of the Methodist Relief and Development Fund totalled £93. Supper was served. The guild’s next meeting is on Tuesday, January 30 at 7.15pm when Angus Ashworth will speak on antiques.

WESTOW

Monthly drop in - The monthly drop in at the cricket pavilion is on Thursday, February 2 between 2pm and 4pm. Tea, coffee and home baking will be available by donation to help pay for the hire of the pavilion. Entry is free and open to everyone. It is an opportunity to have a game of pool, play dominoes or cards and a catch up with friends.

AGM - Westow Cricket Club’s annual general meeting will be held in the cricket pavilion on Friday, February 2 at 7.30pm.

WOMBLETON

Jumble sale - There will be a jumble sale in the village hall on Saturday, February 24.

Domino drive - Domino drives are held in the hall every first Wednesday and last Saturday of each month.
