APPLETON-LE-MOORS

History Group - A display cabinet, purchased through grant funding, has been installed in the village hall. The Rev Godfrey has offered take on the roll of honour and war memorial projects. The next publication, The Life and Times of F C Dawson School Teacher of Appleton-le-Moors 1841-43, has progressed to the point where five people are contributing with the possibility of a further three being involved. It is hoped that final drafts will be received from individuals by the end of March with a printed edition being available by August. Jim Hall intends to write a book concentrating on the village during the medieval period. The idea would be to draw on the rather limited primary sources for Appleton and its neighbouring villages to reconstruct parochial life for an agricultural community while also reflecting how national events impinged on their daily life. Jon Finch will give a talk called Excavation of a Navvy Village in February. Tea & Chat sessions will continue to be held on the first Monday of each month in the village hall, the next being on Monday, December 4 from 2pm and 4pm. Admission is £1. A minibus trip to the Wolds Churches with Joel Brookfield as guide will be arranged for a Saturday in July. The next meeting will be the group’s annual general meeting and will be held at 7pm on Wednesday, March 7.

Bishop Hagg Wood - The latest Saturday morning work task as part of Appleton & Spaunton Community Interest Company's management of Bishop Hagg Wood was held on Saturday. Six people collected wood and burned brash. The next work task will be on Saturday, December 30 at 10am.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Christmas quiz - There will be a quiz in the village hall on Friday, December 8 at 7pm. Entrance will be £4 to include a supper. Bob Muir will be the question master.

Domino drive - There were 12 tables in play at the domino drive last Thursday which hosted by David and Elaine Mudd. Top score for the evening of 114 was shared by J Cockerill and Erica Perrin. A supper was served by Anne Tidd and the profit for the evening, which went to the village hall, was £165. The next domino evening will be on Thursday, December 28 at 7.30pm and the profits that evening will go to Snainton Bowling Club. The next one in aid of the village hall will be held on Thursday, January 25. Countryside knowledge - A countryside quiz in aid of Brompton Primary School is on sale. All the answers connected to either flora, fauna and farming. Quiz sheets are £1 with £10 for the first prize and £5 to the second. Quiz sheets can be obtained by sending a £1 and a stamped addressed envelope to Countryside Quiz, 2 Sawdon Lane, Brompton-by-Sawdon, Scarborough, YO139DT or they can be purchased directly from various outlets including Country Cuts hairdressers in Snainton, Glaves butcher’s shop, Brompton; Ayton fish and chip shop; Reeds newsagents, Pickering; Wardle’s in Thornton-le-Dale and Harris and Horsely’s butchers.

Christmas Fest - The All Saints Church Christmas Fest takes place this weekend at Brompton. It starts with the miniature Christmas tree preview evening from 6.30pm. Entry is £5 to include mulled wine and other refreshments, seasonal music and verse. The church lights will be turned out at about 6.45pm when children from Brompton and Sawdon will start the singing with all the tree lights on. Parking is available in the square which is between the Primary School and the village hall, and along Cayley Lane. The Christmas fair on Saturday is in the village hall from 2pm. Father Christmas will be in attendance and the church will be open for tree viewing. The service at All Saints on Sunday is at 11am.

BULMER

Bridge Club - The meeting on Thursday, November 23 was won by Anne and John Prest with 69.4 per cent. Second were Judith Porter and Brian Crowder with 62.5 per cent.

CROPTON

Fair result - The recent Cropton Church Christmas fair raised a total of £360. There were a variety of stalls including chocolate and gifts. Teas were available with cakes on offer.

HOVINGHAM

Christmas markets - The first Christmas village market will be held on Saturday from 10.30am. until 1.30pm with more than 55 stalls. There will be eight new stallholders including Beacon Hill Cookery with homemade ready meals, Dark Wolf Artwork with cat drawings and hand decorated boxes, Derwent Village Stores with luxury hampers, Harriet Stripling selling Christmas cards and paper, Miss Friday with meringues, brownies and desserts and the True Tea club with tea. The Little Soap Company stall is also returning. The community stall is being run by Ryedale Dog Rescue, raising money with a tombola and 2018 calendars featuring 12 rehomed dogs. Christmas music will be supplied by the Swinton and District Excelsior Brass Band next to the 15ft Christmas tree. The cafe is being run by Hovingham Tennis Club. The volunteer market manager is Graham Mason. The second Christmas market will be on Saturday, December 16.

Imaginative evening - An evening in aid of Ryedale Special Families entitled The Colour of Winter is in the Imagination was held in the village hall on Saturday. Entertainment was provided by the Me & Thee Theatre with two guitars, a banjo, fiddle and singers. The evening was a mix of poems, stories, music and song.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - There will be a quiz in aid of St Chad’s Church at the Crown Inn, on Sunday, December 3 at 8.30pm. Entry is £2 and includes a sandwich supper. The prize is a voucher to spend at the Crown

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Drivers needed - A volunteer drivers meeting organised by the Ryedale Community Transport Group is to be held in the library at 10am on Wednesday, December 6. There is a severe shortage of volunteer drivers in the Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley areas at the moment. Anyone who is interested in becoming a volunteer driver is asked to attend the meeting at which everything will be explained.

Information sought - During the Second World War the town hosted at least one Battery of 153 Regiment RA Leicestershire Yeomanry, the other elements of the regiment being at Kirkdale Manor, until they crossed with the Guards Division to France in 1944. The regiment’s website covers its wartime deployment in Europe, detailing casualties, but omits its stay in Kirkbymoorside. The battery’s final reunion was at the Rose and Crown, Nawton, in the mid-1990s. Anyone with any information on the soldiers who stayed in the town is asked to phone John Dean on 01439 771639.

Indoor stalls - The indoor stalls at the Memorial Hall are growing, alongside the pop-up café. There are new folders on the local countryside to browse through. Repair café - Kirkbymoorside Environment Group’s second repair café was held at the Moorside Room. Among the items mended, or advised upon were a blender, over-locking machine, two sewing machines, a stool, radio, round table, two lamps, laptop, secateurs, sheets, radio-cassette player, vacuum cleaner, tablet, trousers, bag, bike, picture frame, table, boots, CD player, copper watering can and mobile phone. A total of £22 was raised for the history group by the café. A further £55 was given in donations to the environment group for future events. Camera club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club’s next meeting in the Moorside Bar & Club on Thursday, December 7 will be the annual monochrome competition.

Book group - The Library Book Group meets on the first Monday of each month from 2pm to 3pm. For the meeting on Monday, December 4, members will be reading The Invention of Wings, by Sue Monk Kidd. Julian meeting - Kirkbymoorside Julian meetings are held at the Catholic church on the second Tuesday of the month, the next one being on Tuesday, December 12 at 6.30pm to 7.30pm. There will be no meeting in January.

Christingle service - All Saints Church Christingle service is on Sunday at 6.30pm. and will feature Kirkbymoorside Primary School’s choir and Kirkbymoorside Cubs. Each Wednesday during Advent there will be a short service of readings music and prayer part of the preparations for Christmas. The first is on Wednesday, December 6 in All Saints Church at 7pm.

Shoeboxes - Members of All Saints Messy Church and friends helped to cover and fill 80 shoeboxes in total 80 boxes. The following day a representative from the charity Children in Distress attend the service and the vicar blessed the shoeboxes before they began their journey to Romania.

Late night shopping - Local shops and eateries in the will be staying open later than usual on Friday, December 8. Parking will be available free of charge from 4.30pm in Town Farm car park. Vouchers will be available from the library and post office and must be on display. There will be a little snowman tucked away in each of the shop windows for people to take part in the Christmas treasure hunt. People can vote for the best dressed Christmas shop window. Nominations can be made any time up to Friday, December 15 at the library. The winner will be announced at the town council meeting on Monday, December 18.

Domino drives - The monthly domino drive at the bowling club is on Saturday, December 16 at 7.30pm and will include the Christmas draw. The next domino drive at Sturdy Court is on Monday, December 4 at 7.30pm. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits.

Tuesday Group - The meeting on Tuesday, December 12 will be an evening of Christmas carols and readings. The leader will be Daisy and members will act as the hostesses.

KIRKDALE

Candlelit services - The candlelit services of Nine Lessons and Carols, led by the choir, at St Gregory’s Minster, will be held on Saturday and Sunday, December 16 at 4pm each day. To avoid overcrowding, entry will be by free ticket which will be available from. Tickets will be available from Julia Maynard, The Old Forge, Pockley, York, YO62 7TE. Enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope with requests for tickets and give a contact telephone number in case of bad weather forces a change of venue to St Hilda’s, Beadlam.

LOCKTON

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Saturday, December 9 at 7.30pm. Supper is included and all proceeds are for the Lockton and Levisham Playing Fields.

MALTON

Flower club - The open evening of Malton and District Flower Club featured a demonstration entitled Winter by award-winning international floral designer Craig Bullock, who has 38 years of experience in the business. Arrangements using a variety of exotic flowers and artificial materials created a display reflecting all facets of the season. The next meeting is on Tuesday, December 19 at 1pm and is a practice class called A Christmas Cracker. It will include a Christmas buffet lunch. NAWTON

Bingo - The monthly prize bingo in the village hall will be held on Saturday at 7.30pm. A Christmas prize bingo will be held on Saturday, December 16 in the hall at 7.30pm. Both are in aid of hall funds. No bingo sessions will be held in January.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Crafts - There will be a craft day called Raggy Wreath with Flowers in the village Hall on Sunday from 10am to 4pm. To reserve a place phone Penny on 01751 474268. There will be a craft and chat evening in the hall on Thursday, December 7 at 7pm. Tea and coffee with biscuits will be served. The entry fee, to include refreshments, is £2.

Hall’s Christmas events - There will be a family Christmas prize bingo held in aid of Newton and Stape Kids Fun Club in the village hall on Saturday, December 9 at 7pm. Drinks and refreshments will also be available. On Thursday, December 14 there will be a Christmas domino drive in aid of Yorkshire Cancer Care at 7.30pm. Admission is £1.50 which includes tea or coffee and biscuits. The children’s Christmas party, organised by Newton and Stape Kids Fun Club, is in the hall on Friday, December 22 from 7pm to 8.30pm.

Jumble sale - Newton and Stape Kids Fun Club are having a jumble sale in the village hall on Saturday, January 20, from 11am to 2pm. Refreshments will be served. Admission is £1 which includes a drink. Any offers of jumble can be made by phoning Cathryn on 01751 476592.

PICKERING

Christmas market - The market place will close to traffic at noon on Saturday to host the Christmas market. There will be a fudge and toffee stall, hot mulled wine by Feast, burgers and sausages by the Bay Horse, Stape Silver Band will be playing and Minster Stray Morris Dancers doing routines. There will also be a town treasure hunt, a raffle to win a chocolate house, plus various stalls. Santa will be present later in the afternoon with the Christmas lights switched on at 5.30pm.

PEEMS - The Pickering Experimental Engineering and Model Society will be holding its December meeting at the RVS building, Hungate, on Wednesday, December 6 at 7pm. An invitation is extended to all engineering enthusiasts to attend, Members operate a workshop and all aspects of modelling and experimental engineering are discussed at the monthly meetings on the first Wednesday in each month.

Bridge Club - The latest session of duplicate bridge was won by Joan Taylor and Jean Wardman with 75 per cent. In second place were Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall with 60.83 per cent. Third were Terence Boyle and June Greener with 54.58 per cent.

Aquarists’ AGM - The annual general meeting of the Ryedale Aquarist Society was held in the Mill Suite at the Memorial Hall last week. Officers elected were chairman, Mr S Russell; secretary and treasurer, David Marshall; table show secretary, Mr M Taylor-Olsson. Committee members were also appointed. Winners of the annual trophies were: fishkeeper of the year and owner of the best egg-laying fish, Mr S Russell; fishkeeping contest and British Telecom Trophy winner, Mr M Taylor-Olsson and owner of the best live bearing fish, Mr D Marshall. The next open meeting will be held at the home of members Sue and David Marshall on Wednesday, January 10. The annual open show will be held at Kirbymisperton Village Hall on Sunday, April 29.

In bloom - Pickering in Bloom plants used in their various displays around the town are mainly supplied by Metcalfs of Park Street, Pickering, and Ebberston. The group would like to thank the business for its generosity.

Dogs’ delight - The coffee morning held on Saturday, November 18 at the RVS Centre, Hungate, raised a total of £453 for the Dogs Trust charity. A large quantity of bedding and tinned food has been delivered to Leeds re-homing centre.

Pantomime - Pickering Musical Society’s pantomime Goldilocks and the Three Bears will run at the Kirk Theatre from Friday, January 12 to Saturday, January 20, with the exception of Monday, January 15. Light for Christmas - A Light for Christmas service will be held at the parish Church on Sunday, starting at 3.30pm. It is the tenth year the service has been held. The town mayor will switch on the lights on the Christmas tree, which will feature thousands of lights, in the church which is open from 9am each day until 5pm. The lights which will remain lit until Friday, January 5.

New Year’s Eve -Tickets are on sale for the Recreation Club’s New Year’s Eve event which will include a four-piece dance band playing soul, folk, dance, and modern music, with a banquet supper. Super draw - There was no winner of Pickering Town Football Club’s Weekly Super Draw last week. The numbers were 26, 28, and 23. This week’s draw will be increased to £900. The next monthly consolation prize draw will take place on Monday, December 4 for a £100 rollover prize.

Quiz night - The Bay Horse, Market Place, will host a general knowledge quiz in aid of the purchase of a defibrillator, to be sited in the Market Place, on Sunday, December 10 at 7.30pm.

RILLINGTON

Charity bingo - A prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre raised £415 for Louby’s Lifeline Appeal with a further £155 being given in donations. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker Sue Nelson. The Christmas prize bingo will be held on Wednesday, December 20 and is for centre funds.

Quiz time - Jennie will be hosting a cash prize quiz in the Fleece Inn on Friday at 9pm. Entry is £2 per person and includes a hot supper. Jennie’s Sunday night quiz was won by Sue’s Crew.

Christmas cheer - The Lions Christmas sleigh with Father Christmas will be touring the village on Saturday evening. The village Christmas lights will be switched on at the village hall on Thursday, December 7 at 5.30pm with carols and Christmas cheer in the church rooms afterwards.

SEAMER

St Martin’s - The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. His sermon used the traditional Collect for the last Sunday before Advent which opens with the words ‘stir up we beseech thee O Lord the wills of thy faithful people’. This Sunday is otherwise known as ‘stir up Sunday’ and the Rev Firth referred to this being the equivalent of New Year’s Eve as the following Sunday is the start of Advent, the new church year. Janet Lamb gave a bible reading, Jim Baird assisted with the distribution of communion, and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano. Elisabeth and Trish were sidespersons and Enid and Sue served refreshments. Lay preacher John Worthy led the 11am service of modern worship and preached on Jesus as judge. John also led the intercessions. Josh Cremer read and Richard Fuller led the sung worship with Chloe Proctor and John Taylor. Elizabeth Bradley was the welcomer and Wendy Haslam and Debbie Little served refreshments after the service.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s Church - The Rev Joe Kinsella officiated at the celebration of Holy Communion, assisted by Barbara Grice with the chalice, who also read the lesson from the Ephesians. Sidespeople were Keith and Jean Usher and the organist was Martin Monkman. Coffee was served at the close of the service by Jean Usher and helpers. The next service at St Hilda’s will be morning worship led by Barbara Grice on Sunday, December 10 at 10.30am.

Switch on - The Christmas coffee evening and switching on of the Christmas lights at the village hall will be held on Saturday at 6pm. There will be tea, coffee and mince pies, a tombola and a competition. Admission is £1 to include refreshments.

Letters draw - There was no winner of Sherburn FC’s letters draw on Saturday. The letters were B, F and T. The prize fund this week stands at £420.

Community club - Cash prize bingo will be held on Saturday with books on sale from 7.15pm with eyes down at 8pm. The event is for people aged 18 or over only.

Methodist news - The Bible Fellowship met in the chapel and was led by Jean Brown. The coffee morning hostess was Kim Canterbury and donations for coffee continue to be given to the shoebox appeal. Sunday worship was led by Diane Robinson and Kim Canterbury read the lesson. After the service refreshments were enjoyed in the Hall. Diane will return to lead worship on Sunday, the first Sunday in Advent at 10.30am. Member of Messy Church will meet for their Christmas praise party on Saturday, December, starting at 4.45pm.

Christmas lunch - The Senior Citizen Luncheon Club will meet for its Christmas lunch on Wednesday, December 20 at 12.30pm for lunch at1pm. Anyone needed transport within the village, or have any questions. phone Christine on 01944 711294. The event is financed by Sherburn Parish Council.

School fair - Sherburn C of E School’s Christmas fair will be held on Thursday, December 7 at 6pm. There will be a variety of stalls, a tombola and raffle.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - Sinnington People’s Guild met in the chapel schoolroom on Tuesday, November 21 for a talk by the Rev Max Moore. He spoke about it doesn’t matter what you have been, it is what you are now. Rev Moore, and Gilbert Dobson, who played for the hymns, were thanked by Stephen Ward, who chaired the meeting. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, December 5 at 7.15pm when Dr Peter Hartrey will speak about trekking in Dhaulagira.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge Club - The North/South winners at the competition held on Monday, November 20 were Peter and Lesley Jaram with 57.8 per cent. In second place were Isa Eggleston and Margaret Lowe with 56.2 per cent. East/West winners were Pat and George Donnor with 58.7 per cent. Runners-up were Anthony and Moira Brown on 58.1 per cent.

WRELTON

Crafts and gifts - The annual craft and gift fair raising funds for Ryedale Special Families and Peter Simpson’s Trust will take place on Thursday, November 30, at 7pm, in the village hall. There will be various stalls, including cards, jewellery and home-baking. There will also be a raffle, tombola and refreshments. Admission is free.

WI REPORT

Thornton-le-Dale - The president, Margaret Smith, welcomed members and one guest to the November meeting. Birthday cards were presented to Betty Blythe, Barbara Ewbank and Shirley Pitt. The Poppies on The Green group were thanked for their display of more than 1,000 knitted and crocheted poppies which had been admired by villagers and visitors. Names were taken for the Christmas lunch to be held at the New Inn on Friday, December 8. Financial and yearly reports were put to the members and approved. Names of the committee members were displayed, and a vote was taken for the role of president. Colin Culley gave an illustrated talk about an Antarctic expedition, which he had taken with a friend. Colin was thanked by Margaret Smith. Refreshments were served by several of the committee and other members. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, December 12, when Thornton-le-Dale Ukulele group will provide the entertainment. Christmas drinks and nibbles will be served. Guests will be welcome.
