Remembrance Sunday - The parish of West Buckrose will come together on Sunday at 10.30am in the Church of St Mary, Birdsall, for a service of Remembrance when the fallen from each of the villages within the parish will be named. The collection will be donated in support of the work of the British Legion.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Village hall - Another successful year was reported at the annual general meeting of the village hall committee last Wednesday. Highlights of the fundraising were the Easter Monday teas, the village barbecue and the Kirby Soul Band evening. Bookings were up and all the regular groups, art classes, WI, Gardening Club, Tai-Chi sessions, History Group and Community Singers all made a substantial contribution. Officers elected for the coming year were joint chairmen, Jacki Milestone and Maggy Tebb; secretary, Sue Hush; treasurer, Malcolm Leckenby and bookings secretary, Margaret Strickland.

Bishop Hagg Wood - The latest morning work task as part of Appleton & Spaunton Community Interest Company's management of Bishop Hagg Wood was held on Saturday. Five adults, helped by a boy, Edmund, collected wood and burned brash. The next work task will be on Saturday, November 25 at 10am.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Vikings talk - Dr Matthew Townend of York University spoke on Viking Age Yorkshire at the November meeting of Brompton Local History Society. The Viking army captured York in 866AD and the last Viking king of Yorkshire – Eric Bloodaxe was murdered at Stainmore in 954AD. Between those two dates left very little archaeological evidence but much evidence in the form of brooches found by metal detectorists, sculpture, place names and dialect. Linda McCarthy will give a talk called The Man Who Invented Christmas - Charles Dicken’ at the next meeting in Brompton Village Hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday, December 6.

Photos on show - A social evening, heralding the imminent launch of the village website, will be held in the village hall on Friday at 7pm. The evening will concentrate on displaying the historical photograph archive which is a feature of the website. Photographs of local people and views of the village dating back to the turn of the 20th century will all be on view. Drinks and refreshments will be provided.

Remembrance - The service on Sunday starts at the war memorial opposite the Forge Restaurant. It will be a short open-air service with wreath laying at 10.55am and the two minutes silence at 11am. Remembrance continues at All Saints, joining those who have gone straight to the church. Christmas cards featuring scenes of Brompton are now on sale and will be available after the service. The parochial church council will meet on Tuesday, November 14 at 7pm at the vicarage.

BULMER

Bridge Club - The competition held on Thursday, November 2 was won by Michael and Val Allen with 59.5 per cent. Second were Jane Bartlett and Robin Garbutt with 57.5 per cent.

CROPTON

Christmas fair - The church’s Christmas fair will be held in the village hall on Saturday, November 18 from 2pm to 4pm. There will be a number of stalls and teas will be available. Admission is free.

Quiz - The village hall is the venue for the 17th Peacock Quiz on Friday. It starts at 7.30pm with a pie and peas supper. There will also be a raffle.

FARNDALE

Calendar - The 2018 Farndale calendar with pictures by local photographers is available from BATA Kirkbymoorside, the Feversham Arms Inn, Farndale, and the Lion Inn, Blakey. It costs £6. The calendar is sold in aid of Farndale Village Hall’s rebuilding project.

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Tuesday, November 14 at 7.30pm.

Quiz - There will be a general knowledge quiz in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice in the Feversham Arms Inn on Friday, November 17 at 8pm. There can be a maximum of four people in a team with entry at £2 per person. Mick Stanley will be the questionmaster. The evening will include a supper and a raffle.

GANTON

Flower arranging - There will be a flower arranging demonstration in the village hall on Sunday 1 at 2pm. Tickets are £7.50 and includes afternoon tea. The arrangements will be raffled afterwards and all proceeds are for the village hall to raise funds towards a storeroom/resource centre.

GILLAMOOR

Bingo - To raise funds for St Aidan’s Church, a prize bingo will be held at Moorside Club & Bar, Shaw Drive, Kirkbymoorside on Tuesday, November 14 at 8pm.

HELMSLEY

Luncheon Club - The meeting last Wednesday held at the Pheasant Hotel, Harome, was attended by 45 members and one guest. After a lunch the president introduced a young man who worked at the Cocoa House in York. He spoke about the origins of chocolate and lots of samples of chocolate in various stages of production were passed around. The club meets on the first Wednesday of each month at The Plough and welcomes new members. For further information phone 01439 770010.

Probus - The Helmsley and District Men’s Luncheon Club held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 31 at the Feathers Hotel in Helmsley. The 25 members attending enjoyed a meal and a talk on North Yorkshire National Park from Simon Bassindale, who is its senior ranger. The Probus club meets on the last Tuesday of the month at the Feathers. Anyone interested in joining the club, or coming as a guest, should phone the secretary, Keith Elliot, on 01439 771866.

HOVINGHAM

Market - There will be two Saturday village markets next month on December 2 and 16. The November market held last Saturday saw 12 volunteers turn out in the rain to get the market ready for the stallholders. Despite the weather, which improved mid-morning, the pubic came in their usual numbers. Ryedale Special Families sold tickets for their event in the village hall on Saturday, the November 25 and gave an impromptu performance with banjo and guitar. The Royal British Legion had an excellent day with donations from the public and stallholders. The cafe, run by Hovingham Church, was so busy that it sold out of bacon and sausage baps. The soup, donated by Hel’s Bowls, was also popular Tony Mathe was the volunteer market manager.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

History Group - Two members of the Kirkbymoorside History Group led a guided Halloween Walk around the historic central the town on the evening of Tuesday, October 31. They explored the darker and mysterious side of the town’s past. The group’s regular newsletter will be sent out as an email attachment this month to those on its mailing list. Bridge club - At the latest game North/South winners were Sue Pearson and Steve Lonsdale with 64 per cent. Mary Mortenson and Chris Baxter were runners-up on 60 per cent. East/West winners were Ann Scott and Frank Bailey on 57 per cent. Sylvia and Mike were second with 55 per cent. Play of the week was won by Anne Smith and Graeme Matthew. The first round of the handicap competition begins next week.

Competition time - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met last Thursday at the Moorside Bar & Club, Shaw Drive, for the first of two open competitions to be held this season. The judge was Andrew Linscot from Northallerton Camera Club. In the print section, Richard Burdon, Lynn Wraith and Janet Burdon tied for first place with Mike Ward as runner-up. Paul Stephenson, Jim Cavanagh, and Martin Williams all had joint top scores with five in the projected digital image section. The next meeting is on the Thursday, November 16 when Ernie Howard will be give a lecture titled Drawing Targets Around Arrows.

Blooming marvellous - The flower festival was a great success, raising £1,650 for All Saints Church funds. It featured knitted and crocheted displays of the flora and fauna of spring, summer, autumn and winter, which have been handmade by the Kirkbymoorside Wool Crafters.

Repair Café - Kirkbymoorside Environment Group is holding a repair café on Saturday from 10am to 2pm in the Moorside Room, Church Street. Minor repairs can be done on all sorts of household items, toys, electrical goods and sewing alterations or advice given. More volunteer repairers are required.

Parade - Remembrance Day parade will take place on Sunday leaving the Moorside Club & Bar at about 10.40am. It will be led by Kirkbymoorside Town Band. The service will take place at All Saints Church followed by a return march back to the club where the band will play a short concert. The two minutes silence will also be observed on Saturday at 11am at Pump Hill, opposite the Memorial Hall).

Autumn fair - Among the stalls at the autumn fair in All Saints Church on Saturday are St Catherine’s Hospice, Marie Curie, St Aidan’s Church, All Saints Church, Children in Distress, Kirkbymoorside History Group, Gabrielle Wheatley and Fair Trade. The fair will run from 9.30am to 11.30pm. Tea and coffee will also be on sale.

Menzown - Fossil expert Andrea Brewster will give a talk on crinoids at the Menzown meeting on Monday, November 13 at the King's Head Hotel.

Group meeting - Julian Prayer Group will meet on Tuesday, November 14 at 6.30pm at St Chad’s RC Church.

Ladies Fellowship - The next meeting is in the library today (Wednesday) at 7.30pm when Carol Messham will talk about polymer clay art.

Messy Church - The next meeting will be in the Methodist Church schoolroom on Monday, November 20 from 4.30pm to 6pm.

Quiz sheet - Fundraisers for St Catherine’s Hospice, Scarborough, are circulating a quiz sheet on occupations. It is available in town from Wainds, Lemon Tree fish and chips restaurant, Bridget’s and the newsagents.

Tuesday Group - The meeting on Tuesday, November 14 in the Methodist Church Jubilee room at 7.30pm. is a members’ knitting bee. The leader will be Sonja and Gwen and Anne are the hostesses.

Amnesty International - The Kirkbymoorside group’s next meeting will be tomorrow (Thursday) at 1.30pm. On Wednesday, November 22, there will be a meeting at Mr Wilf’s Café, Pickering, from 10.30am to 12.30pm for card signings and at Kirkbymoorside at a venue to be finalised. Remembrance - There will be no service at St Gregory’s Minster on Sunday. The Remembrance service will be at St Hilda’s, Beadlam, starting at 10.15am.

MALTON

Bridge club - Keith Freeman and John Hayton were the winners at Malton Bridge Club on Wednesday, with 61.8 per cent. In joint second place, with 58.3 per cent were Philip Mason with Annette Jackson and Derek Fox with Richard Hilton. The winners of the Open Ryedale Pairs competition on Sunday were York pair Meg Jenkins and Linda Beckwith with the Malton combination of Madge Allison and Richard Hilton second.

MARTON & NORMANBY

Autumn colour - Marton and Normanby Gardening Club’s speaker at the September meeting was Mike Kinnes, whose talk was called Autumn Colour. He took a selection of plants and branches to illustrate his talk. He encouraged members to help wildlife by not pruning perennials quite so vigorously and to choose longer lasting summer bedding plants that will still be flowering well into autumn. Membership cards, costing £8, were given out. Seed catalogues were distributed and forthcoming events were discussed. The meeting ended with tea, coffee, biscuits and a raffle. New members are welcome to join the next meeting in Marton Village Hall on Tuesday, November 14 when Steve Wright will give a talk called Clothe Those Walls. Admission is £2 on the door.

MIDDLETON

Lacemakers - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Lacemakers held in the village hall on Saturday, November 18 from 10am to 3pm.

NAWTON

Ceilidh - The ceilidh in the Memorial Hall on Saturday, October 28 raised £266 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The organisers wish to thank everyone who supported the event.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in the village hall tomorrow (Thursday) at 7.30pm. Admission is £1.50 which includes tea or coffee and biscuits.

Craft workshop - On Sunday, November 12 there will be a craft workshop called Make Your Own Lino Print Christmas Card. It will run from10am to 4pm. PICKERING

Peggy Atkinson – The funeral of Peggy Atkinson, Pickering’s Royal British Legion most senior member will be held today (Wednesday) at the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul at 2pm. Peggy died peacefully at home on October 24. Her funeral hearse will be accompanied by four motorcycle riders provided by the Royal British Legion.

Remembrance weekend - The act of Remembrance held at 10.55am on Saturday at the top of the market place. On Sunday there will be a service at the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul followed by a parade to the War Memorial on Bridge Street accompanied by Stape Silver Band. There will be a short service at the memorial for all denominations and wreaths laid.

Bridge Club - The North/South winners at the duplicate bridge session held on Thursday were Tricia Pearce and Stan Bough with 53.5 per cent. Second were Sue Hardman and Dorothy Cordery with 53 per cent. East/West winners were Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall with 65 per cent and second were Robin Ashdown and John Bramall with 56.5 per cent. Next week is the first of two of the teams of four competition.

Coffee morning - There will be a coffee morning in the Potter Hill Methodist Church Schoolroom on Saturday from 10am to noon in aid of the Shoebox Appeal. It will include the packing of the shoeboxes from 10am. Any boxes, completed or otherwise, may be left at the church at any time or at 14Willow Court, home of the organiser, Daphne Bowes. Leaflets about the appeal may be found at the Methodist Church, Reeds newsagents and the library.

Dogs Trust - The annual coffee morning in aid of the Dogs Trust will take place at the RVS Centre, Hungate, on Saturday, November 18 from 10am to noon. There will be a cake stall, tombola, raffle, and bric-a-brac. Any contributions to the stalls would be appreciated. Old blankets and towels are always needed for the dogs.

Fishkeepers - The annual general meeting of the Ryedale Aquarist Society will be held today (Wednesday), in the Mill Suite, Memorial Hall, at 7.30pm.

Show time - Pickering and District Horticultural Society will hold its second open show on Sunday, November 19 in the Memorial Hall. Entries close at 9.45am with judging at 10am. The show is open to the public from 1pm to 4.30pm with trophies and awards presented at 4pm. Admission is by donation at the door. Refreshments will be available. The society’s Hardy Plant Group will meet in the Memorial Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday, November 16 when Peter Williams from Seaton Ross will give a talk called Shady Characters and Shy Madness.

Super draw - Last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Super Draw was not won. The numbers were 30, 36 and 23. This week’s draw will be increased to £675.

Kirk Theatre - The Friends of Kirk Theatre will stage a Christmas shopping evening at the theatre in Hungate on Wednesday, November 22 from 7pm to 9pm. Tickets are on sale for A Night at the Music Hall which will be presented by Pickering Musical Society on Saturday, November 18 at 7.30pm. The compare will be Adam Collier. There is a Gary Barlow tribute evening on Saturday. November 25 at 7.30pm.

Quiz time - Six teams playing for £42 prize money took part in Jenni’'s Friday Mega Quiz. The winners with 54 points were Mike, Fiona and Col. Second were Honeymooners plus Rob and Heather and third Team at the Bar (50). Jennie’s Sunday night quiz was won by Honeymooners plus Mike and Col.

Live music - Highway 61 will be playing American slide blues and old style classics at the Fleece Inn on Saturday from 9.30pm.

SEAMER

St Martin's Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided, and pastoral assistant Kieron Middleton preached, at the 9.30am service of BCP Holy Communion. Kieron’s sermon was based on the gospel reading where Jesus is teaching the crowd that they should not be like their religious leaders who love to show by their dress and their actions that they are important but fail to teach the simplicity of the God’s love for his people. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, Carol Beswick and Enid Plevey were sidespersons, and Clare Firth served refreshments. Kieron preached again at the 11am service of modern worship, which he also led. Liz Cremer gave the Bible reading and Tim Cremer led the intercessions. The sung worship was led by Steve Raettig with Richard Fuller, John and Sue Grice and John Taylor. Jenny and Duncan Bland ran the Sunday Club. Liz Bradley was the sidesperson and Andrea Raettig served coffee.

Armistice Day service - The annual service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday in the Memorial starting at 10.45am. Light refreshments will be served after the service.

SHERBURN

Remembrance Sunday - There will be a short service on Sunday in the Methodist Chapel led by Rev Mary Jackman followed by the observation of Remembrance at the memorial at 10.45am. After the Remembrance, refreshments will be served in the chapel hall.

Letters Draw - There was no winner of Sherburn FC’s weekly draw on Saturday. The letters drawn were N U and X. The prize fund this week will be £240.

Messy Church - Youngsters will make a tree for Zacchaeus to hide in at the Messy Church session in the Methodist Chapel on Saturday, staring at 4.45pm.

RNLI work - John Porter will give members of the Senior Citizens Luncheon Club an update on the work of the RNLI at the lunch in the chapel hall on Wednesday, November 15. Members should meet from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. Transport within the village can be arranged, by phoning Christine on 01944 711294.

Methodist news - The Monday Fellowship was led by Jean and explored John chapter 14 where Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life.’ The fellowship meets weekly in the chapel at 2pm. Tuesday coffee mornings are held each week from 10am to 11.30am. There is no charge but any donations for coffee are currently raising funds for the Christmas shoeboxes. The Holy Communion service was led by Rev Dr Kevin Ridd and also included the blessing of the shoeboxes. Rev Kevin told us the story of Solomon, a young boy who received a shoebox and his joy at the treasures he found in it. Welcomer Jean Brown also read the lesson from Thessalonians and steward Liz Aconley read the gospel lesson from Matthew. The organist was Chris Cade and the audio-visual equipment was operated by Christine Fenwick. Kim Canterbury assisted the Rev Ridd with the Communion. Coffee was enjoyed in the hall afterwards. The service on Sunday will be led by the Rev Mary Jackman at the earlier time of 10am so the congregation we can join with the Remembrance at the memorial at 10.45am before coffee at the chapel hall.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - The Rev Francis Loftus gave an illustrated talk on Sylvia Wright to the Sinnington People’s Guild on Tuesday, October 31. Born in Leeds, Sylvia trained as a nurse, midwife and health visitor. In 1982 she sold her house, car and all her possessions, then travelled by sea with a white van to Tamil Nadu, India. She settled in Tiruvannamalai, where initially, using a house, she ran a free health clinic. Eventually, after fundraising, she built a 180- bed charity hospital. Patients paid one rupee (about 10p) for treatment. She then set up a residential school for profoundly deaf children and day centre facilities for 80 disabled children. At the same time she trained staff to help he, which resulted in the building of a nursing college. Sylvia was awarded the OBE for her work, and now in her 80s she is handing over the running of the hospital complex to Indian doctors and her staff. A collection for the of Sylvia Wright Trust will be taken at the next meeting on Tuesday, November 14 at 7.15pm. It will be a musical evening with the Thornton-le-Dale Ukuleles. There will be supper after the entertainment.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge Club - North/South winners at the meeting on Monday, October 30 were Margaret Lowe and Isa Eggleston with 59.6 per cent. In second place were Lynda Lockwood and Mary Mortonson with 57.5 per cent. East/West winners were Ralph and Hilary Hurst with 61.2 per cent and in second place were Janet Sutor and Sue Shuttleworth who scored 56.7 per cent.

WESTOW

Clothes collection - Westow Cricket Club is holding its annual clothes collection on Saturday, November 18. Items should be left outside the village hall before 10.30am on that day. Households around Westow have been asked to leave theirs on the curb outside their homes, also before 10.30 am. Donations of old or unwanted clothes, shoes, bags, soft toys will be collected and sold by weight and used for the running costs of the cricket club. Anyone not living in Westow who would like to donate should phone Julie Price on 01653 618214 to arrange an earlier date for donation.

WOMBLETON

Remembrance - Sunday’s Remembrance service, led by the Methodist minister, will be at 10.30am in the village hall.

Bingo and coffee - There will be a Christmas bingo session in the village hall on Wednesday, November 15 at 7.30pm to raising funds for the hall. A Christmas coffee morning will be held on Saturday, November 25.

WI REPORT

Appleton-le-Moors - The president, Gill Humphreys, presided at the October meeting, which was attended by her father, Ken, who was on holiday. The branch welcomed back Tony Nicholson, who brought our members his third and final instalment of Secrets in the Attic. Members have followed him on a journey of love and tragedy in the late 1800s and look forward to read his upcoming book to accompany his talk. The next meeting is the annual general meeting which will be held at The Moors Inn, followed by supper to celebrate the branch’s 90th anniversary.

YCA REPORT

Wombleton - About 20 members were handed songbooks, tambourines and maracas at the meeting on Tuesday, October 17 when 16 members of the Thornton-le-Dale Ukuleles began their varied programme. John Scoble, the bandleader, explained that they now have 80 members who had all joined as beginners. Some players had joined through the Sight Support system. The next YCA meeting will be at 7.30pm on Tuesday, November 21, when Daisy Barnes will demonstrate how to make paper flowers. Nineteen members and one guest attended the meeting on Tuesday, September 19 in the village hall. After the business meeting, trophies won at Ryedale Show were presented to Daisy Barnes (art), Christine Baxter (handicraft), Norma Ward (flowers) and Carol Gamble (cookery). The Rose Bowl was presented for most points won overall. The competition of the day was won by Pilla Pickles. Members had been busy knitting twiddlemuffs which were received by The Alzheimers Society, Special Needs and Omega Barn. The speaker was Fred Normandale who gave a talk on growing up among the fishermen in Scarborough’s Old Town.
