APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Tea, Chat & History - There will be a rolling slide show at the Tea, Chat & History meeting in the village hall on Monday, November 6 at 2pm.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service on Sunday will be Holy Communion, starting at 11am, conducted by the vicar. There will be a meeting of BUDS, the Benefice study group, at the Downe Arms on Monday, November 13. It starts at 6.30pm with an optional supper and the meeting follows at 7.30pm. The subject is women in the Bible. Those requiring supper should phone Pat on 01723 862227.

Photos on show - A social evening, heralding the imminent launch of the village website, will be held in the village hall on Friday, November 10 at 7pm. The evening will concentrate on displaying the historical photograph archive which is a feature of the website. Photographs of local people and views of the village dating back to the turn of the 20th century will all be on view during the evening. Although some of the images have already been identified here are still quite a few for which identification is needed. The archive also needs updating with pictures of events which took place after 1990 so if anyone has any to contribute, take them along for copies to be made which can be added to the gallery. Drinks and refreshments will be provided.

BULMER

Bridge Club - The competition held on Thursday, October 26 was won by Hazel Hope and Thelma Hardware with 62.5 per cent. Second were Elizabeth and Terry Strickland on 60 per cent.

FARNDALE

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Tuesday, November 14 at 7.30pm.

HELMSLEY

RNLI - A prize bingo to raise funds for the RNLI will be held at the scouts’ hut on Saturday, November 18 at 7.30pm. There will also be a raffle. Phone 01439 770678 for further details. The fish and chips supper at the Feathers on Thursday, October 19 raised £659.

HOVINGHAM

Market time - There will be more than 50 stalls at the monthly village market on Saturday from 10.30am to 1.30pm. Eight of the stallholders run classes including wood turning, crochet, bee keeping, chocolate making, stained glass and textile art. Community stalls are the Poppy Appeal with a varied selection of items from pin badges to rulers and wrist bands. Tickets will be on sale for the Me and Thee Theatre in aid of Ryedale Special Families at the village hall on Saturday, November 25. The regular busker Josh, will be playing at the market. The cafe will be run by Hovingham Church and volunteer market manager is Tony Mathe.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Pub quiz -There will be a quiz in aid of St Chad’s Church at the Crown Inn on Sunday at 8.30pm. Entry is £2 and includes a sandwich supper. The prize is a voucher to spend at the Crown Inn. Phone 01751 417343 for further details.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Quiz sheet - Fundraisers for St Catherine’s Hospice, Scarborough, are circulating a quiz sheet on occupations. It is available in town from Wainds, Lemon Tree fish and chips restaurant, Bridget’s and the newsagents.

Domino drives - Sturdy Court will hold domino drives on Monday, November 6 at 7.30pm and Monday, November 20. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits.

Tuesday Group - The meeting on Tuesday, November 14 in the Methodist Church Jubilee room at 7.30pm. is a members’ knitting bee. The leader will be Sonja and Gwen and Anne are the hostesses.

Amnesty International - The Kikbymoorside group’s next meeting will be on Thursday, November 9 at 1.30pm at a venue to be announced. Subscriptions are due to Chrissie. On Wednesday, November 22, there will be a meeting at Mr Wilf’s Café, Pickering, from 10.30am to 12.30pm for card signings and at Kirkbymoorside a venue to be finalised. Concert - Kirkbymoorside Brass Band and local group Harmonia Choir will give a concert at St Peter’s Church, Norton, on Saturday, November 18 at 7.30pm. Autumn fair - There will be an autumn fair in All Saints Church on Saturday, November 11 from 10am.

Ladies Fellowship - The next meeting is in the library on Wednesday, November 8 at 7.30pm when Carol Messham will talk about polymer clay art.

Coffee morning - Kitching Walkers solicitors’ coffee morning supporting Macmillan Cancer Care raised £910. There were more than 30 varieties on home baked goods to choose from and a raffle was held. The firm have held the event for the last three years. Businesses who donated raffle prizes were Spice4u, Shelagh Landy, Through the Looking Glass, Busy Liz, The Post Office Newsagents, Greengrocers, DIY store, Peter Illingworth, Moore Stephens, Kirkbymoorside Pet Shop, Towlers, Summit Bakery, Home Decorating Centre, Something Special, Wrights Hairdressers, Love My Hair, JRA Essential, The Lemon Tree, Scrumptious Deli, Bridget’s Café, Wainds and Caroline’s Hair.

Christmas market - There will be more than 30 stalls selling crafted goods, local produce and Christmas gifts at the Christmas market in the Memorial Hall and the main street, from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, November 25. It is hoped to have craft activities in the library during the morning. Kirkbymoorside Brass Band will play at 11am. There will be face painting in the Memorial Hall and Father Christmas will be in his grotto in the Dugout at noon until 2pm. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Entry is free.

Repair café - The Kirkbymoorside Environment Group’s next repair cafe will be held on Saturday, November 11 from 10am to 2pm in the Moorside Room, Church Street. For further details are to become a volunteer repairer email kmegadmin@phonecoop.coop

KIRKDALE

Remembrance - There will be no service at St Gregory’s Minster on Sunday, November 12. The Remembrance service will be at St Hilda’s, Beadlam, starting at 10.15am.

MALTON

CAFOD collection - The total for the CAFOD collection for harvest fast day at St Leonard & St Mary’s RC Church, has risen to £483.51. New members are needed for the CAFOD Action Group. If you are interested in helping the team, email Helen Jenkins at hatka@btinternet.com There will be a meeting fin St Leonard’s Parish Centre on Tuesday, November 14 at 7pm for parents who would like their child to make their First Holy Communion during 2018. Children making their First Holy Communion would typically have had their 8th birthday by December 31 this year. Application forms are available at the back of church and from St Mary’s School. These can be returned to Helen Jenkins, Johanna Davis, or Father Tim. The parish gif weekend will be this coming weekend. Several years ago at a parish meeting it was agreed to hold a gift weekend each year instead of a Christmas fair. Funds raised go entirely to the upkeep of the church.

Bridge club - The latest session of Malton Bridge Club’s positional pairs competition was won by Philip Mason and Mike Jackson. In second place were Annette Jackson and Rob Ashdown while Graham Burgess and Stan Bough came third. In the opening fixtures of the Yorkshire League on Sunday, Malton A drew 10-10 at home to Leeds B while Malton B lost 13-7 to Sheffield F. The club will run the open Ryedale Pairs event at York Bridge Club on Sunday.

NAWTON

100 Club - Winners of the Recreation Ground September 100 Club draw were the Pickard Family, no 68 (£50); H Hayton, no 108 (£30); L McGlen, no 145, (£10) and A Dale, no 116, (£10).

Prize bingo - The monthly bingo session will be held in the village hall on Saturday at 7.30pm.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Domino drive – There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Thursday, November 9 at 7.30pm. Admission is £1.50 which includes tea or coffee and biscuits.

Craft workshop - On Sunday, November 12 there will be a craft workshop called Make Your Own Lino Print Christmas Card. It will run from 10am to 4pm. Antiques talk - Luke Arnold will give a talk on antiques and the value of antiques at the village hall on Thursday, November 23. Admission is £3 which will include tea or coffee and biscuits.

PICKERING

Dementia meeting - People living with dementia, their carers and friends are invited to meet in The Tea Shop, Hungate, at noon on Friday. The group meets on the first Friday of every month. For further details phone Marion on 017514 474403.

Get on board - Pickering on Board will meet at the Quaker Meeting House on Sunday from 6pm to 8pm to enjoy board games. All kinds of games available or visitors can take their own. The cost £3 and includes refreshments. The sessions are held on the first Sunday of every month.

Bridge Club - The fifth and final session of Pickering Bridge Club’s scratch pairs competition was won by Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall with 62.50 per cent. Second were John Bramall and Robin Ashdown with 56.25 per cent. and in third place with 55.56 per cent were Tricia Pearce and Stan Bough.

Coffee morning - There will be a coffee morning in the Potter Hill Methodist Church Schoolroom on Saturday, November 11 from 10am to noon in aid of the Shoebox Appeal. It will include the packing of the shoeboxes from 10am. Any boxes, completed or otherwise, may be left at the church at any time or at 14 Willow Court, home of the organiser, Daphne Bowes. Leaflets about the appeal may be found at the Methodist Church, Reeds newsagents and the library.

Sponsored walk - Pickering Town Football Club’s recent sponsored walk raised just under £800 for club funds. Jim Hodgson was thanked for all his work helping with this event.

Dogs Trust - The annual coffee morning in aid of the Dogs Trust will take place at the RVS Centre, Hungate, on Saturday, November 18 from 10am to noon. There will be a cake stall, tombola, raffle, and bric-a-brac. Any contributions to the stalls would be much appreciated. Old blankets and towels are always needed for the dogs.

Fishkeepers - The annual general meeting of the Ryedale Aquarist Society will be held on Wednesday, November 8 held in the Mill Suite, Memorial Hall, at 7.30pm.

Super draw - Last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Super Draw was not won. The numbers were 32, 18 and 37. This week’s draw will be increased to £600.

Kirk Theatre - The Friends of Kirk Theatre will stage a Christmas shopping evening at the theatre in Hungate on Wednesday, November 22 from 7pm to 9pm. Tickets are now on sale for A Night at the Music Hall which will be presented by Pickering Musical Society on Saturday, November 18 at 7.30pm. The compare will be Adam Collier. There is a Gary Barlow tribute evening on Saturday. November 25 at 7.30pm.

Quiz night - The Bay Horse, Market Place, is hosting a general knowledge quiz in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on Sunday, November 12 at 7.

Domino drive - Pickering Football Club will hold a domino drive on Friday November 17 at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane at 7.30pm.

Tribute night - Tickets are on sale for tribute night The Great Pretender at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Saturday at 7.30pm when Steve Littlewood will perform the songs of Freddie Mercury. RILLINGTON

Annual meeting - The annual meeting of Rillington and District Horticultural and Industrial Society was held in the Fleece Inn. Officers elected were president, Robin Bellfield; chairman, Sue Butler; vice-chairman and schedule secretary, Denise Dudley; treasurer, Richard Denton; show secretary, Tracey Ireland; minutes secretary, Marian Cockrem and school liaison, Katy Allanby. Alan Coatsworth, Sarah Allanby, Katy Allanby and Gary and Rose Waters were elected to serve on the committee. The Treasurer reported a loss of £67.35 of the show. Annual membership of the society is £2 and gives a discount on selected garden requisites from six local garden centres. The 95th annual show will be held on Saturday, September 8 when the photography classes will be Wonders of Winter, Rillington Today, an open class and a photograph of any subject accompanied by an amusing caption.

Bingo - A total of £368 was raised for Settrington Bowls Club at a prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker Sue Nelson. The next prize bingo at the centre will be on Wednesday, November 22 and is for Louby's Lifeline Appeal.

Quiz - Jennie will be hosting a mega quiz in the Fleece Inn on Friday from 9pm. There will be cash prizes to third place, a cash jackpot and hot supper. It is £2 per person to enter. Jennie’s Sunday night quiz was won by Gary’s Team.

Clearing up - A Love Where You Live action morning to clear litter, leaves and weeds from around the village will be held on Saturday, November 11. People should meet in the village hall car park between 9.30am and 11.30am where pickers, sacks and gloves will be available. There is no need to stay for the full session - half an hour would be appreciated. It is not intended to carry out work on clearing the beck of vegetation on this occasion but if volunteers could get together to form a team to do this a stretch at a time it would be appreciated. The parish council is seeking to employ someone on an ad-hoc basis to keep the beck free of rubbish and do other odd jobs around the village. ROSEDALE & HARTOFT

Craft fair - There will be a craft fair and WI coffee morning at the Coach House, Rosedale Abbey from 10am on Saturday. There will be hand-made local crafts including jewellery, Christmas gifts and decorations, cushions, turned wood and much more. The WI will be serving coffee, holding a raffle and selling cakes. Raffle and cake donations will be welcome.

SEAMER

St Martin’s - St Martin’s congregation, alongside the congregations from St John the Baptist, East Ayton, and St John the Baptist, Cayton, gathered in the village hall in Cayton for their regular Benefice Together Service. The Bishop of Hull, the Rt Rev Alison White presided at the service of Holy Communion assisted by the vicar, the Rev Andrew Moreland. The Bishop used the gospel reading as a base for her sermon, where Jesus emphasised the two main commandments, to love God and love our neighbour. Various members of all three congregations supported the service through the music, as sidespeople, and assisting with the distribution of communion. Members of St John the Baptist served refreshments after the service.

Coffee morning - There will be a coffee morning in St Martin’s Church on Saturday from 10am to noon to raise funds for the Christian charity Mission Aviation Fellowship.

SHERBURN

Methodist news -The coffee morning hostess was Kim Canterbury and donations for coffee are to be given to the Christmas shoebox appeal. Sunday morning worship was led by the Rev Pam Ward and the welcomer was Kim Canterbury who also read a bible lesson. The New Testament lesson was read by Sandra Cade. Chris Cade played the organ and Robin Magowan the guitar. Jan Tebb operated the audio-visual equipment. Rev Pam talked about how Moses didn’t see his vision fulfilled but his passion for the task God had for him continued to the end and then the mantle was carried on by others. After worship refreshments were enjoyed in the hall. The Holy Communion service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Rev Dr Kevin Ridd and will include the blessing of the shoeboxes. Many you people help sorting and pack the shoeboxes and an extra session was needed to finish the boxes as there were so many donations. The boxes will go to needy children in Eastern Europe.

Letters draw - There was no winner in Sherburn FC’s draw on Saturday. The letters were M R and S. The new prize fund is £180.

Community club - Bingo will be played at the Community and Sports Club on Saturday with books on sale from 7.15pm and eyes down at 8pm. There are lots of cash prizes on offer. The event is for people aged 18 and over only.

Live music - An acoustic session featuring Rob and Amy will be held at East Riding pub on Saturday. They will be performing acoustic covers from the 1970s to 2017.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - Pam Towler gave a Power Point presentation of a year in Kew Gardens to Sinnington People’s Guild on Tuesday, October 24. She outlined the history of Kew, explained the many garden areas, hothouses and the recently constructed tree walk. The presentation included close-up floral photography. Tea and biscuits were served. The next meeting is on Tuesday, November 7 at 7.15pm Julie Ryan will speak of her work with International Rescue.

SNAINTON

St Stephen's Church - The autumn fair will take place in Snainton Village Hall on Saturday, November 11, at 2pm. Entry is £1, which includes a cuppa and a mince pie. This is a traditional village church fair selling homemade cakes, vegetables, fruit, jams, pickles, chutney and plants. There will also be a raffle and tombola and will be in aid of the Roof Appeal.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge Club - The result competition on Monday, October 23 produced joint winners on 60.7 per cent - Margaret Lowe with Isa Eggleston and Barry Smith with Bob Wardell.

WESTOW

Coffee morning - There will be a coffee morning in the cricket club pavilion from 10am until noon on Saturday. It will include a presentation of Body Shop at home as well as tea, coffee and home baking being sold in aid of spring bulbs for the cricket ground. There will be a box of toys to keep little ones entertained.

Christmas draw - Tickets for Westow Cricket Club’s Christmas draw can be purchased from any club member or supporter. Prizes will include voucher, Christmas cakes, pork pies, alcohol, biscuits, chocolates and other Christmas items. The draw will be take place at the Christmas social evening, 7pm until 11pm, on Friday, December 15 in the cricket club pavilion.

Clothes collection - Westow Cricket Club is holding one of its regular clothes collections. Donations of old or unwanted clothes, shoes, bags, soft toys are being collected on Saturday, November 18. Bags will be distributed around the village. Items collected will be sold by weight and used for the running costs of the cricket club. Anyone not living in Westow who would like to donate should phone Julie Price on 01653 618214 to arrange an earlier date for donation.

WOMBLETON

Bonfire night - Wombleton Sports and Recreation Club’s bonfire and fireworks display will be held on Sunday, November at the sports field. The bonfire is to be lit at 6pm with fireworks at about 6.30pm. Hot food will be available. Entry is £4 for adults and £2 for children. People are asked not to take sparklers. Proceeds from the event are for pavilion improvements.

Remembrance - The Remembrance service, led by the Methodist Minister, will be on Sunday, November 12 at 10.30am in the village hall.

Christmas bingo – A session of Christmas bingo will be held in the village hall on Wednesday November 15.

WI REPORTS

Ebberston & Allerston - There was a good turnout for the annual autumn supper in Allerston Village Hall. Everyone contributed a plate of food and there was a large variety of dishes to choose from. Jenny Wyatt gave a reading of John Betjamen’s thought-provoking poem a Diary of a Church Mouse. Marion Rymer was a clear winner of the sunflower competition. The next meeting is on Tuesday, November 14 in Ebberston Village Hall and will be the annual general meeting.

Kirkbymoorside - The branch met on Monday, October 2 and after the business meeting 20 members and four guests entertained by Julie Ryan about swimming the English Channel. Julie has made three attempts, the last one being successful. She is a member of International Rescue which at the time of the meeting was on standby to go to Mexico. The competition, a seaside photo, was won by Colleen Nicoll, with Molly Stephens second and Sheila Riby third. Birthday posies made by Jan Tattersall were presented to Colleen Nicoll and Jeanne Binns. The next meeting will be at 2.15pm in the Methodist Schoolroom on Monday, November 6 when members will be learning how to make fabric Christmas wreaths. Twenty-two members attended the previous meeting on Monday, September 4. The business meeting was followed by a presentation by five members who had been on courses at Denman College. Sue Sloan explained how she had learned to make silver jewellery and displayed her items. Pam Walsh, Glad Savege, Carol Smith and Angie Fawcett then told about their courses about how to make the best use of colours and styles to suit each individual. Pam was used as a demonstration model. Pam and Carol then demonstrated how different jewellery suits different heights, body shapes and colouring. The competition for a favourite accessory was won by Carol Bancroft, with Jane Jackson second and Pam Walsh third. Jan Tattersall provided birthday posies for Jean Sherman, Christine Brett and Jane Jackson.
