APPLETON-LE-MOORS

History Group - The group’s committee meeting heard that the Heritage Lottery Grant was for £3,900 and to date £2,958 has been spent. The end report must be completed by Saturday, September 30. Several projects were discussed which would fulfil the requirements of the grant. In order of preference they were 1 A wall mounted display cabinet for the village hall, estimated cost £500; 2 An additional name to be added to The War Memorial in the form of a separate stone plaque. The next substantial publication will be The Life and Times of F C Dawson, School Teacher of Appleton-le-Moors 1841-43. Villagers would be asked to read Mr Dawson’s substantial diary and chose items to expand. Talks will be arranged for November and a February. Tea & Chat sessions will continue with the same format and restart on Monday, September 4. Future events will include a metal detector field walking trip to Sheriff Hutton and a minibus for a trip to the Wolds Churches. The next meeting will be at 10.30am on Tuesday, November 14.

BEADLAM

AGM - Beadlam & District Domino League’s annual general meeting will be held at the Moorside Bar & Club, Kirkbymoorside, on Tuesday, August 29 at 8.15pm. All teams wishing to enter the league must have at least one representative at the meeting to be eligible for league entry. Winners of the 2016 5&3s pairs should return the main trophy at the meeting.

BRANSDALE

Church news - The last of the season's afternoon teas takes place at St Nicholas' Church at Cockayne at the head of the dale on Saturday, August 26, from noon to 4pm. There is also a good selection of books to choose from and the church benefits from a toilet.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service on Sunday will be at 8am. Arrangements are going ahead for a safari supper on Saturday, September 23. Further details are to be announced as soon as possible.

Domino drive - The new season of domino drives will begin on Thursday, September 28. They will be held on the fourth Thursday in the month throughout the winter. If anyone has any prizes to donate they will be gratefully received, just get in touch with any member of the village hall committee or Elaine Mudd.

BULMER

Bridge club - The Bulmer Bridge Club results for August 17 were: 1st Robin Garbutt and Jane Bartlett 75%; 2nd Anne and John Prest 62%.

FARNDALE

Calendar - The 2018 Farndale calendar in aid of the village hall rebuilding project will be launched at Farndale Show on Bank Holiday Monday. It is priced at £6 but there will again be a show offer of two for £10). Anyone who cannot attend the show should find the calendar on sale from the usual outlets soon after the show.

FOXHOLES

Ceilidh – There will be a ceilidh with Night Owl at the Community Hall on Saturday, September 30, starting at 8pm. Doors open at 7.30pm. Admission is £5. Tea, coffee and soft drinks are included but no alcohol is allowed at the event. It is a bring and share supper. There will be a raffle and donations of prizes will be most welcome. HAROME

Tea party - An afternoon tea party held in the village hall raised more than £1,250 for Yorkshire Cancer Research. The organisers wish to thank everyone who supported the event.

HELMSLEY

History group - It is proposed to set up a local historical and literary research group, perhaps to be known The Kirkdale Study Group, to meet weekly in Beadlam and Nawton. Phone John Dean on 01439 771639 if you would like to know more.

Cream teas - The Helmsley branch of the RNLI’s sale of cream teas at 19 The Limes raised £350. Scones were donated by Thomas the Baker and jam and clotted cream was donated by The Cream Tea Society.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - There will be a quiz in aid of St Chad’s Church at the Crown Inn at 8.30pm on Sunday, September 3. It is to £2 enter and includes a sandwich supper. The prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown Inn.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Open show - Kirkbymoorside Horticultural Society’s open show will be held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday, September 23. Schedules are available for the 117 classes. Children’s classes are free and there are five trophies to be won. Bridge club - At the latest game, North/South winners were Pat Hainsworth and Angela Smith with 56.2 per cent. Gill and Trevor Hardcastle were runners-up on 55.per cent. East/West had Sylvia and Mike Strickland at top spot with 58.9 per cent. Bo and Tony Simpson were second with 54.1 per cent. Play of the week went to Anne Smith and Bob Price.

KIRKDALE

Patronal festival - St Gregory’s Minster will be celebrating its Patronal Festival with a Sung Eucharist at 11am on Sunday, September 3. The Friends of St Gregory’s Minster have invited its patron, Dr Francis Jackson, to the service and to lunch afterwards in celebration of his 100 years of music. The choir will sing his Communion Setting in G and Order Our Days in Thy Peace, an anthem he wrote specially for their Patronal Festival about 20 years ago and dedicated to Leslie Mathews and the choir of St Gregory’s Minster. Dr Philip Moore, who was Dr Jackson’s successor as Master of the Music of York Minster, will be playing the organ for the service which will open with Kirkdale Introit Non Enim Pro Locis Res which he wrote last year, especially for Kirkdale. Dr Moore is also a member of The Friends of St Gregory’s Minster. The choir will sing music by Sir Edward Bairstow who was Dr Jackson’s predecessor at York Minster. The preacher will be the Venerable Richard Martin, Archdeacon of Kalk Bay, in the Diocese of False Bay, South Africa which has a Companion Link with the Diocese of York.

LASTINGHAM

Church events - The Friends of Lastingham Church are hosting a Garden Soiree with the White Rose Jazz Band on Saturday, September 2 from 5pm to 8pm in the gardens of St Mary's Church by permission of Mr and Mrs Heinrichs. It is in aid of the Ringer Windows Appeal, a project to conserve three unique Italian stained-glass windows. Admission is £10 and includes a glass of wine and a selection of cheeses. An organ recital by Dr Roy Massey, organist emeritus of Hereford Cathedral, will be held on Saturday, September 9. Draw winners - The July Beckett Recreation Ground 100 club winners were No 30, the Stamp Family (£50); no 53, J King (£30), no 99, C R G Nichol (£10) and no 43 R Palmer (£10).

Prize bingo - The monthly bingo in the village hall, in aid of hall funds, will be held on Saturday, September 2 at 7.30pm.

PICKERING

Fleamarket – The fleamarket and gift air which is held in the Liberal Club, Smiddy Hill, will be open for four days over the coming Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday to Tuesday, August 26 to August 29 from 10am to 4pm each day.

Probus Club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met on Tuesday, August 8 for lunch at the Forest and Vale Hotel, under the chairmanship of Charles Weston. Jean Harrod spoke about her experience as a diplomat and novelist with a talk called Deadly Diplomacy. Club membership inquiries are welcome by phoning 01751 472879.

Domino drive - Pikering Cricket Club will hold its monthly domino drive on Thursday, August 31 at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, at 7.30pm.

Open show - Pickering Horticultural Society will hold its first open show of the year on Sunday in the Memorial Hall. The show opens from 1pm to 4.30pm. Admission is by donation at the door. Classes will include flowers, vegetables, produce, floral art, children’s classes, and handicrafts. Entries close at 9.45am except floral art class which will close on Friday, August 25. The entry fee is 30p per class but children’s classes are free to enter. Judging starts at 10am. Trophies and awards will be presented at 4pm. Teas will be served during the afternoon and there will also be a tombola.

Super draw - Last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Weekly Super Draw was not won. The numbers were 11, 35 and 30. This week’s draw will be increased to £300.

Tribute night - The unofficial Peter Kay tribute performer Lee Lard will be appearing live at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Saturday September 16 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £15 which also includes a pie and peas supper. Quiz night - The Bay Horse, Market Place, will host a general knowledge quiz in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on Sunday, August 20 at 7.30pm.

Kirk Theatre – Tickets are on sale for the Elvis Tribute evening with Adam Carter at the Kirk Theatre on Saturday, and an evening of music with Stape Silver Band on Saturday, September 16. Pikes’ officials - Pickering Town Football Club held a well-attended annual general meeting last month at the Recreation Club., Officials elected for the season were: president, Ray Kemp; vice-presidents, Steve Marshall, Jim Hodgson and Craig Short; secretary and match secretary, Stephen Chapman; treasurer, Mike Sturgess; auditor, Cyril Lawson, and management team, Margaret Dunning, Neil Hobson, Mike Sturgess, Wayne Taylor, Mick Wilkinson, and Stephen Chapman.

Welcome Church - Members of Welcome Church are having a walk to Ellerburn on Sunday, followed by tea and cakes at Baldersons on return. Walkers should, meet on the Green at Thornton-le-Dale.

RILLINGTON

Ladies Guild - Thirteen members were present at the August meeting of Rillington and District Ladies Guild in Woodlands Community Centre. Jacquelyn Wood introduced Jean Harrod who spoke about her life as a diplomat, and, following retirement to Hutton-le-Hole, her career as an author. Elizabeth Saint gave the vote of thanks. Judy Duke sold tickets for the raffle. The evening’s hostesses were Margaret Lund and Tina Buckle. A letter of thanks has been received from Malton Hospital League of Friends for the £60 donation sent to them in December. At the September meeting, Judy will give a talk called My Inheritance from the World, and not as published in the programme.

Quiz - Jennie will be hosting her mega-quiz on Friday at 9pm at the Fleece Inn. There will be cash prizes up to third place and cash jackpot. Entry is £2 and includes a hot supper.

RYEDALE

Arboretum visit - Members of the Royal Airforces Association (Ryedale Branch) paid a return visit to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, Staffordshire, to see the recently installed Guinea Pig Club Memorial and the branch’s Memorial Tree which was planted in 2008. Over the years the branch has contributed to a number of installations at the NMA where there is a local connection, including the main RAFA Memorial and the statues to the Women’s Land Army which are both located on the Millennium Walk. It was the fourth branch outing to the NMA. Several members spent some time viewing the new exhibition to the Far East Prisoners of War Association including the Changi Gate whilst others visited the Shot at Dawn installation commemorating those servicemen executed for alleged desertion during World War One. Members were also pleased to see a new memorial to the Princess Mary’s RAF Nursing Service. Those who were able walked to the branch’s Memorial Tree and Tom Law placed a poppy cross whilst those present stood in silence to remember past members. The Ryedale branch holds regular meetings at Malton & Norton Golf Club with lunches and other social events held both at the club and at other venues in the area. Choir meeting - The annual general meeting of the Ryedale Choral Union Choir will take place on Tuesday, September 5 at 5.45pm. Rehearsals for Faure’s Requiem will begin on Tuesday, September 19 at 5.30pm. New members are always welcome. For further information phone 01751 477340.

SEAMER

Methodists - The preacher at Sunday’s service was the Rev John Stanton and Holy Communion was celebrated. The door steward was Margaret Harris, who also gave the gospel reading. Doreen Lawson was the organist, and Sheila Gray took the offering. Bert Blower was the vestry steward and assisted with the Sacrament. Rev Stanton spoke about the stresses of everyday life but told the congregation not to burden themselves with impossibly high standards. Coffee was served after the service. The preacher this Sunday will be Michael Earnshaw.

St Martin’s - The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. He used the alternative gospel reading of the teaching of Jesus to know that in his death and resurrection here is foundation and strength to live our life. This was linked to the activities of the young children, who, in their meeting, were looking at the Book of Proverbs to understand more about the need for simple words and phrases help us live our life. Kieron Middleton led the prayers, Kate Middleton assisted with the distribution of communion and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano. Clare Firth and Sue Johnson were sidespersons, and Sue, together with Enid Plevey, also served refreshments after the service Lay preacher John Worthy led the service of modern worship at 11am, and he also preached on the gospel account of the Canaanite woman’s entreaty to Jesus to heal her daughter. Sue Grice gave the reading and she also played bass in the worship group, which was led by John Grice (guitar) with Tim Cremer (guitar), Becky Cremer (vocals) and John Taylor (drums). Jo Taylor was the sidesperson and Elizabeth Bradley served refreshments after the service.

SHERBURN

Letters draw - Sherburn FC’s letters draw on Saturday produced the letters C, L and Y. As there was no winner, this week’s prize fund stands at £120.

Quiz - The Community and Sports Club’s monthly quiz will take place on Sunday at 8pm. A free light supper will be provided.

Car boot sale - There will be a car boot sale in the village in aid of the village hall on Bank Holiday Monday, August 28 from 1pm to 4pm. There will be refreshments and a tombola. Sellers can arrive from noon. It costs £5 for cars and £7 for vans.

St Hilda’s - The next service at St Hilda’s Church will be Holy Communion on Sunday at 9am when the Rev Joe Kinsella will officiate. St Hilda’s will be hosting the local choir Allerston Aloud for an evening of music and entertainment on Friday, September 8 at 7pm. Admission will be £5 and includes refreshments.

Coffee morning - The Macmillan coffee morning will be held on Friday, September 29 from 10am to noon. There will be a tombola, prize draw, cakes and stalls.

Luncheon club - Members met and enjoyed a birthday lunch as four members were celebrating. Birthday greetings were sung to Barbara, Mary, Jean and Joan. Barbara then spoke about her experiences as a quiz contestant on the programme 15 to 1. Thanks were given to Chris and Kay Miles and helpers, Teresa, Leanne, Lacey, Kim, Angela and Christine who helped out to give the regular team a break. The club will meet on Wednesday, September 20, from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. The speaker will be Rev Jane Carter. All senior citizens are invited to attend and transport within the village can be arranged.

Methodist news – The Tuesday coffee morning hostess was Liz Aconley. The coffee mornings are held each week from 10am to 11.30am. No charge is made but any donations for coffee are given to charity. Friends are invited to Filey Methodist Church for the welcome Service for our new minister, the Rev Kevin Ridd. The service begins at 7.30pm but there will be tea, coffee and cake served from 6.30pm. The Sunday service was led by Michael Kitchen. The welcomer was Kim Canterbury and music was provided by Chris Cade on the organ and Robin McGowan on guitar. The audio-visual equipment was operated by Christine Fenwick. The lesson from Jeremiah was read by Janet Magee and the parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin from Luke’s Gospel were read by Jean Brown. Refreshments were enjoyed in the hall after worship. The Holy Communion service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by the Rev Pam Ward.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge Club - The meeting on Monday, August 14 was won with 59.5 per cent by Sue Shuttleworth and Janet Sutor. In second place with 57.9 per cent were Ralph and Hilary Hurst.

WOMBLETON

Domino drives - There will be a domino drive in the village hall to raise funds for the hall on Saturday at 7.30pm. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits. There will also be a domino drive in the hall on Wedneday, September 6.

YCA REPORT

Rillington and District - Fourteen members were present at the August meeting of Rillington and District Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association in the village hall. Owing to an injury sustained in her garden, Jean Dale took two bus journeys to attend the meeting to talk about holidays she had taken in China. Her trips included visits to the Great Wall of China and the Terracotta Warriors). She brought a number of souvenirs she had collected on her trips. Caroline Neuff thanked Jean for her talk and later drove her home. Jean judged the competition for Something Oriental and awarded first prize to Babs Buckley, second was Sue Butler and third Sue Donnell. Names were taken for the lunch at Kirby Misperton, the harvest festival at Helmsley and the autumn meeting at Nether Poppleton. The evenings hostesses were Sue Butler and Caroline Neuff. Marjorie Grice sold tickets for the raffle. At the September meeting, Rosie Stephenson will give a talk on Ryedale Dog Rescue. It is a change to the published programme.
