ALLERSTON

Flower festival - Churches Together in Allerston are organising a flower festival on July 28, 29 and 30 with a theme of children’s books in blooms. There will be displays in both the Methodist Chapel and the parish church of St John the Evangelist. Anyone who would like to contribute a display is invited to go to the church or chapel on Saturday, May 6, between 10am and noon to choose a site and let the organisers know which book they would like to interpret. AMPLEFORTH

Plant sale - Ampleforth and District Gardening Club’s annual sale will be held on Saturday, May 13 in the village hall from 10am to noon. There will be a range of annuals, perennials, vegetables and herbs together with homemade produce. Entry is £1 and includes tea or coffee.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Bishop Hagg Wood - Five people collected wood and piled up brash on Saturday as part of Appleton & Spaunton Community Interest Company’s management of Bishop Hagg Wood. As it is the nesting season, tasks will be limited to minimise disturbance at the next work task on Saturday, May 27.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service at Brompton on Sunday will be an 11am communion.

Parish council - The parish council met on Monday, April 24. During the open forum, Mary Jones mentioned that a new television series of Penelope Keith’s Villages of the Year’ is to be aired. A researcher for the programme contacted Mary with regards to entering Brompton. If the application is successful filming will take place in June during the open gardens. Work is to be carried out on the footpath linking Hungate and the village hall which has become hazardous because of tree roots. The council has been given a £14,000 verbal estimate for the repair of the bank side from the bridge to the seat. Official quotes are to be obtained and inquiries about grants made. Hornbeam or alder trees are to be planted at the side if the stream in autumn and a beech tree in Sherburn Road. Various parish issues were discussed including the post of village caretaker, the war memorial, the alms houses, parking on Church Lane, the ditch on the Butts and a children’s play area. CROPTON

Village hall - The spring fair held in the village hall on Saturday raised £333 for hall funds. The organisers would like to thank the many helpers and Cropton WI who donated half its takings from a cake stall. The annual classic car rally will be held in the grounds of the hall on Sunday, August 20. GILLING EAST

Dawn walk - Jonathan Pomroy will be leading a dawn chorus walk starting from the village hall at 5am on Sunday, May 14. After the walk, everyone is welcome to come into the hall for breakfast of bacon rolls with a mug of tea or coffee. The cost to join the walk, including bacon rolls, is £5.  Booking is required through gillingeastevents@hotmail.co.uk. Proceeds are in aid of the village hall heating repairs fund.

HELMSLEY

Probus - The club held its monthly meeting at the Feathers Hotel on Tuesday, April 25. The lunch was followed by a talk by Chris Spakouskas from Yorkshire Hearts Vineyard & Brewery who spoke about its brewing and champagne production. The club meets on the last Tuesday of each month at the Feathers and welcomes new members. HOVINGHAM

Village market - The village’s market will be held in Saturday from 10.30am to 1.30pm with 54 stalls. Guest stalls are Dorothy Exley Machine Embroidery with home and nursery furnishings, notebooks and pictures and the Artisan Fudge Company from York with more than 40 flavours of handmade cream and butter fudge and honeycomb. Community stalls are the Alzheimer Society and the Village Clock Appeal, whose aim is to raise £7,000 to electrify the clock, which is currently wound by hand by a group of volunteers. It is also hoped to silence the clock during the night, so as all the villagers can get a good night’s sleep. The cafe will be run by the Scackleton Action Group and the volunteer market manager is Graham Mason.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Pub quiz -There will be a quiz in the Crown Inn on Sunday, at 8.30pm in aid of St Chad’s Church. Entry is £2 entry and includes a sandwich supper. The prize is a voucher to spend at the Crown Inn. Note the change of date. 

KIRKBYMOORSIDE Ladies Fellowship - The next meeting will be held in the library on Wednesday, May 10, at 7.30pm when Brenda Hewitt will be talk about her faith.  New members are always most welcome.

Bridge club - Barry Smith and Bob Wardell won North/South with 65 per cent at the latest game. Anne Avery and George Goodall were runners-up on 63 per cent. Sylvia and Mike Strickland topped East/West with 66 per cent. Sue Pearson and Steve Lonsdale made 61 per cent for second place. Play of the week went to Angela Smith and Pat Hainsworth.

Reading group - The Kirkbymoorside Library Reading Group is looking for new members. The library is also looking for volunteers to help with choosing, ordering and returning loans. For more information, phone John Dean on 01439 771639.

Marie Curie walk - The sponsored walk held in Farndale on Saturday, March 25 raised £5,054 for the Marie Curie nursing service in the local area. The Kirkbymoorside Fundraising Group would like to thank all those who walked, sponsors, helpers and the team from the North York Moors National Park Authority who led the walks.

Classic vehicles -The second Father’s Day Classic Vehicle Show will be held at the Moorside Bar & Club on Sunday, June 18, from 11am to 5pm. Last year’s event attracted a selection of about 50 cars, lorries, tractors and motorcycles. There is no charge for anyone wishing to bring their vehicles for display. Anyone interested in bringing their vehicle, or if anyone would like a table for an auto jumble, please contact the organisers. Admission to view the vehicles is £1 per adult and under 16s free if accompanied. There will be a barbecue, tea, coffee, soft drinks and other refreshments available. The club bar will be open. MALTON

Flower club - The April meeting of Malton and District Flower Club featured a demonstration by Susan Hall called Something New. She created contemporary designs using quality materials arranged in modern containers, while passing on useful mechanical tips. At the next meeting on Tuesday, May 16, Martin Fish will give a talk called My Life in Gardening, So Far. It will be followed by the annual trip to his garden, near Thirsk on Tuesday, June 20. The club will be participating in Slingsby Flower Festival on June 23, 24 and 25 and Malton in Bloom in July. It is National Flower Arranging Day on Friday, a day to celebrate flowers initiated by the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies, supported by the WI. If anyone gets a bouquet, take the label to the flower club meeting in Old Malton Memorial Hall at 2pm on Tuesday, July 18 and enjoy the afternoon’s free demonstration entitled Mid-Summer Delights by Kevin Hara. Bridge club - The final round of Malton Bridge Club’s Cross-IMPs competition resulted in another good win for the leaders, Philip Mason and John Hayton, with 64 points. In second place were Madge Allison and Richard Hilton with 59 points while a pair visiting from Germany, Helmut Hohmeyer and Jenny Wright, were third with 39 points. In the final rankings, Philip and John were followed by Mike and Annette Jackson, with Madge and Richard third. Last week, the club foursome of Mike Jackson, Richard Philpott, Annette Jackson and Richard Hilton progressed to the fourth round of a national knock-out competition by beating a Sheffield team.

NAWTON

Bingo - The monthly bingo session will be held in the village hall is on Saturday at 7.30pm.

Anniversary services - The Methodist Chapel anniversary services will be held during the weekend. Saturday May 6 at 7pm there will be a visit of the Lealholm Choir will visit on Saturday at 7pm. Tuesday group - Members of the Tuesday Group will be holding their annual general meeting at the Potter Hill Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 9 at 7.30pm.

Jazz festival - The fifth annual Ryedale Jazz Festival will be held in the town from Sunday, July 23 to Saturday, July 29. Tickets costs for the Monday to Saturday concerts are £10 per concert if purchased before the end of this month. It is £12 after Wednesday, May 31. Musical evening - A musical evening with the Ayrton family from Lancashire will be held at the Methodist Church on Saturday, May 13, at 7.30pm. Light refreshments will be served afterwards.  

RILLINGTON

Ladies Guild - The opening meeting of Rillington and District Ladies Guild, held in Greenbanks at the invitation of Anne Nicoll was attended by 11 members. The Rev Judy Duke’s opening talk was on Women of God. It focussed on two women, St Hilda of Whitby and St Bathildis, both were born in the 7th Century and lived fascinating lives. Judy’s talk concluded with the reciting of Song of Caedmon. The evening progressed with two supper dishes prepared by Anne followed by desserts provided by members. Judy was thanked for her talk and Anne for her hospitality. Judy collected subscriptions which will remain at £10. The annual general meeting was held over until the May meeting as there were no minutes to hand from the previous year. At this month’s meeting in Woodlands Community Centre a talk on the Yorkshire Air Ambulance will be given by a member of its staff.

Quiz time - Eight teams playing for £60 prize money took part in Mike Williams’ general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners were Honeymooners, second were Gary’s Team and third Weaverthorpe 4. The £15 jackpot was won by Team @ the Bar. 

Bingo - A total of £267 was raised for centre funds at the first prize bingo of the year held in Woodlands Community Centre. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker Sue Nelson. The next prize bingo at the centre will be on Wednesday, May 17, and is for All Saints’ Church, Thorpe Bassett.  Exhibition - Entry forms for the art and handicrafts exhibition must be returned by Friday. These can be left at the village post office or the Buckrose Community Café.

Play in the pub - Super Sleuth Productions will present Suspicious Minds, a murder mystery set in the 1960s, in the Fleece Inn on Friday, May 12, at 7pm. The cost is £30 and includes a gourmet four-course meal. There is the chance to solve the specially scripted 1960s style mystery and win a prize. To book, phone 01944 758464.

RYEDALE

Embroiderers Guild - The Ryedale branch of the Embroiderers Guild met in Wrelton Village Hall on Saturday, April 1. Janet Lewthwaite, a member of the group, described the ecclesiastical work she had undertaken with different tutors, but particularly with Beryl Dean, a famous embroiderer who died in 2001. Beryl Dean was instrumental in the design and production of the Jubilee Cope and made for the Bishop of London and depicting 73 London churches.  Janet worked on this particular item, which is now owned by St Paul’s Cathedral. Local artist Heather Gatt will give a talk on Batik backgrounds for stitch at the next meeting on Saturday, May 27 at 2pm.  From 10am the members will meet to stitch their own work.

SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by Christine Fenwick, assisted by Jean Brown. The vestry steward was Bob Jackman, the organist was Doreen Lawson and the welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the collection. Sheila Gray and Eileen Burn gave the bible readings from John’s gospel which tells of the Miraculous Catch of Fish and Peter Reinstated. In her sermon, Christine said that after the resurrection the disciples went back to their jobs as fishermen but Jesus came to them and shared a meal of fish. He then gave them a new mission to go into the world and become fishers of men. The preacher this week at 10.30am is Derek Orwin.   

Service together - The congregations of St Martin’s Church, Seamer, East Ayton and Cayton met at St. John’s Church, East Ayton, for the Benefice Together service on Sunday. The vicar led the service and presided at Communion. Churchwardens Geoff Derrington and Gordon Young read the lesson and assisted with the chalice respectively. John and Sue Grice led worship and John Haslam accompanied three hymns on the organ. Refreshments, including homemade cakes, were served by the East Ayton church family. The vicar preached from Luke 24v13-35 where the resurrected Jesus meets two of his followers.

SHERBURN

Fundraising exhibition - The open garden and portrait exhibition at Sue Pollard’s home raised of £242.50 for Lincs2nepal. The organisers wish to thank everyone who came to the event, particularly Nancy Hotham, Rosemary Dawson, Raymond Mennell, Audrey Clark, Gill Thorpe, Pam Pollard Mary Dickinson, Sandra Cade, Andrea Hardwick, Pete and Adele Mattinson and Lynda Prest, for their donations. The charity Lincs2nepal, which has a Facebook page, was founded by Gary Goddard. It is a charity which helps the lives of lower caste families, including providing education, clean water and shelter for those who were hit by an earthquake and flooding nearly two years ago. It was through visiting Nepal as a volunteer that local woman Sue Wiles met Gary.

Letters draw - Sherburn FC’s weekly draw on Saturday produced the letters K W Z. As there was no winner, the prize fund this week stands at £360.

Live music - The Cover Ups will be playing rock and pop covers at the East Riding pub on Saturday from 9pm.

Methodist news - The Sunday worship was led by Nikki Warner. The welcomer was Kim Canterbury, the steward was Liz Aconley and the Bible reading of the Emmaus road was given by Janet Magee. The organist was Chris Cade. Mrs Warner spoke of how the disciples had been worried and unhappy before they met Jesus but were very happy when they recognised him. The children joined with the song, ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ assisted by Leo the lion. Afterwards coffee was enjoyed in the hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be the chapel anniversary celebrations service and will be led by the Minister, the Rev Denise Free. There will be lunch afterwards.

SNAINTON

Concert success - Paul Wheater’s concert of country favourites and well-known hymns in the village hall raised more than £360 towards the upkeep of the hall and playing field.

STAPE

Silver band – During its 138-year history Stape Silver Band has played at many venues both locally, nationally and internationally. More used to the contest stage or concert platform, the band spent four nights over the Easter weekend appearing at Whitby Pavillion Theatre in Whitby Amateur Dramatic Society’s production of Brassed Off. The play, directed by Katrina Stead, required the female members of the band to be dressed as men with the addition of somewigs. As well as performing some quite difficult music, including the march Florentiner, and the gallop from the William Tell Overture, there was also the opportunity for band members to display their acting skills. The music featured also includes Rodrigo’s Concerto De Aranjuez - which was performed by Beth Breckon on flugal horn. Village walk - The annual village walk will take place on Wednesday, May 17.

WRELTON

On stage - The Library Theatre Touring Company from Leeds will be performing two dramatic monologues from Alan Bennett’s acclaimed BBC series Talking Heads in the village hall on Friday, May 12, at 7.30pm. Deborah Kelly will play the lead role in both plays, A Lady of Letters and Bed Among the Lentils. The Library Theatre Touring Company was formed in 1996, supported by Leeds Libraries, with the original aim of taking accessible, professional theatre to outlying local areas. YCA REPORT

Rillington - The April meeting of Rillington and District Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association in the village hall was attended by nine members. The April newsletter had been emailed to members. There were no immediate items to bring to members ‘notice but a copy of the YCA accounts for year ending December 2016 was available for inspection. The news of the closure of Sherburn branch was received with sadness, as Rillington members have been guests of Sherburn branch on many occasions. After the business meeting, Valerie Gilbert led an Easter bonnet workshop with members decorating straw and paper hats, which Valerie had made, with flowers, lace, ribbons and Easter decorations. Sue Butler thanked Valerie for a very entertaining evening. The evening’s hostesses were Tracey Ireland and Babs Buckley. Lorna Mastaglio sold tickets for the raffle.
