OSGODBY

Dangerous parking - Residents who have problems entering and leaving their houses in Osgodby Lane, between Osgodby Hall Road and Bradworth Drive, have complained to the parish council about the parking of vehicles on this stretch of road. The residents said that vehicles approaching the parked cars must move into the opposite carriageway facing oncoming traffic and, when signalling to enter a drive the following traffic, assume that the signalling vehicle is only overtaking and not reducing speed to enter a driveway. This is causing vehicles to suddenly brake to avoid a collision. There is a bus stop opposite the parked vehicles which exacerbates the situation. The approach, following a right-hand bend in the road, leads to drivers encountering the parked vehicles at speed. Vision of the road situation beyond the parked vehicles is also impaired leading to vehicles overtaking and facing head-on other vehicles approaching in the correct lane. The residents leaving their vehicles on the road do have garages to the rear but fail to use them. One resident reported that their vehicle had been involved in a rear collision. The placing of double yellow lines would eliminate the problem but it was thought that the North Yorkshire County Council policy was that, until an accident had occurred, no action would be taken. The residents consider that this area presents an accident waiting to happen and they request urgent action to prevent this.

Bingo - A bingo evening was run at the community centre with Moira Audsley and Janet McNamara as callers and cashiers. Margaret Rogers and Christine Hastie were the checkers. Refreshments were provided by Mrs Rogers and Mrs Hastie. The raffle was run by Mrs McNamara and the flier was run by Joan Davis. OBITUARY
Thomas Harold Marshall - A service in memory of Thomas Harold Marshall, who died on Wednesday, July 6, aged 91, was held at St Andrew’s Church, Bugthorpe, on Friday, July 15, followed by interment in the churchyard. The service was conducted by the Rev James Finnemore. The organist was Daphne Smithson. Donations in lieu of flowers were for St Andrew’s Church funds. Harold was born at Corner Farm, Bugthorpe, on December 11, 1924, the youngest of four children. He attended Bugthorpe School and did a building apprenticeship with Steels Builders in Pocklington, cycling to work every day. He then worked with Joseph Pulleyne Builder in Stockton-on-the-Forest. In 1958 he married Doris and went to live in Full Sutton for four years before returning to Bugthorpe to the family farm. They had three daughters, Kathryn, Ruth and Elaine. Harold was kept busy with his dairy cows, pigs, sheep and poultry and he also kept bees but still kept his hand on his building skills for neighbouring farmers. A true country gentleman, he played for the village team and Aldby Park. In later years he would enjoy watching cricket on the television and going to Pocklington and Woodhouse Grange to watch his son-in-law Neal and grandsons Matthew and Daniel play. In 1999 Harold and Doris retired to live in Stamford Bridge where they enjoyed gardening and lots of holidays. Doris died in 2012 and the following year Harold suffered a severe stroke and was cared for by the staff at Derwent House, Kexby. Chief mourners were Kathryn and Michael Douglas, Ruth and Neal Jackson, Elaine and Mark Robertson (daughters and sons-in-law), Jessica and Emma Douglas, Matthew, Hannah, Daniel and Ellen Robertson grandchildren (Tilly and Callum Jackson youngest grandchildren did not attend), Nancie Boyes (sister-in-law), Christine Bettley, Eileen and Chloe Boyes (nieces) and David Boyes (nephew).
