APPLETON-LE-MOORS

History walk - An evening walk was undertaken by eight people and led by Jim Hall of Appleton History Group. The walk started and finished at The Moors Inn and included wading across the ford at Sun Seven and visiting Nutholme and Appleton Mill. The walk was part of The Breath of Fresh Air programme organised by The North York Moors National Park.

Medieval weekend - The final full meeting of the group organising the village’s Medieval Weekend met in the village hall on Saturday. The weekend will be held on July 30 and 31 and will include activities such as pottery, hog roast, a talk, walks and music. A blacksmith will also be giving demonstrations and an ale, brewed especially for the event, will be available at The Moors Inn.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

All Saints - The church service on Sunday will be Holy Communion at 9.30am taken by the Rev Tony Lindsay.

Newsletter - The new edition of the village newsletter is in the process of distribution. The next edition is scheduled for September so if there is anyone with items or ideas for articles that they would like to contribute phone Di Ford on 01723 859211 or email deford47@btinternet.com.

Japanese gardens - The next meeting of Brompton & District Gardening Club will be held on Wednesday, July 27 at 7.30pm in the village hall when Tony Harding will give a talk called The Spirit of Japanese Gardens. New members are always welcome. The club’s annual show is due to be held on Saturday, August 14 at Sawdon Village Hall. Schedules are available to anyone wishing to enter.

BULMER

Bridge Club – There were joint winners at the meeting held on Thursday, July 7 with the pairing of Val and Michael Allen scoring 58.3 per cent along with the partnership of Judith Porter and Jane Bartlett.

CROPTON

Open garden - The recent open garden at Fernwood, raised a total of £1,840 for charity. The helpers, who were kept busy in the garden and village hall serving teas, have all been thanked together with those who donated refreshments. Thornton-le-Dale ukulele band played in the village hall during the afternoon and were greatly appreciated HOVINGHAM The village market was held on Saturday, July 2 with a Wimbledon tennis theme. There was one heavy shower of rain but apart from this the weather was dry with sunny intervals. There were 33 outdoor stalls and 11 indoor ones. Music was provided by Jack, a young saxophonist from Kirkbymoorside. Twenty-seven children enjoyed free tennis coaching from 10.30am to 1.30pm by Mark Franklin, a grade 4 LTA tennis coach, sponsored by the market and Hovingham Tennis Club. The cafe was also run by the Hovingham Tennis Club. The next market will be on Saturday, August 6 from 10.30am to 1.30pm when the Ryedale Family History Group will be showcasing their work with an exhibition in the Community Room, helping with family trees and researching relatives who were in World War One.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

All Saints - The church’s summer fair will be in the memorial Hall on Saturday, July 16 from 2pm to 4pm. There will be numerous stalls, tea, coffee and refreshment. The Pilgrim Discipleship Group will meet in church today (Wednesday) at 7.30pm and on Wednesday, July 20. The PCC have a meeting in church on Monday, July 25 at 8pm. The Ladies Fellowship meet today (Wednesday) at 7pmfor a garden visit.

History Group – The group are holding open days to view their archives on Friday, July 22 from 10am to 6pm and Saturday, July 23 from 10am to 4pm. Visitors will be able to see how far the group has come on its journey to create a permanent home for its ever-growing collection of material. There will be displays of school photos and some images from World War One to remember the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. The group are based at the site of Ryedale Auctioneers, on the A170. There will be a small marquee in case of rain and the site has plenty of parking and easy access for all visitors. If anyone has some items or photographs they would like to take, the history group we would love to see them.

Messy Church – The next get-together is on Monday, July 18 at 4pm in the Methodist Church Hall.

Open gardens - The gardens at Sleightholmedale will be open on Sunday, July 24 from 1pm to 6pm.Tea will be served and any money raised will go towards the Kirkbymoorside support group for Marie Curie.

NAWTON

Cake stall - Friends of Nawton School are holding a cake stall at Towler’s Arch in Kirkbymoorside today (Wednesday) from 9am.

PICKERING

Fishkeepers - Ryedale Aquarist Society met in the Mill Suite in the Memorial Hall last week when Ron Atherton of Hartlepool Aquarist Society gave a talk about his 50 years as an aquarist and Paul Barrow of Caer Ufra Aquarist Society spoke about how fish are given their scientific names. Paul also judged the fish and awarded first prize to a Loricarin shown by Marc Taylor-Olsson. The next meeting of the RAS will be held in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday, September 14 at 7.30pm when David Armitage will speak about fish collecting in Burma.

Domino league - The annual general meeting of the Pickering Domino League will be held at the Conservative Club, Market Place on Wednesday, July 20 at 8pm. All teams are invited to send a representative. New teams are also required to join the league for the 2016-17 season. Any interested team is also asked to attend the meeting and to make themselves known to the league officials. For further information, phone, the secretary/treasurer on 07791 987645. Members are reminded that if no representative of the team attends this meeting, that team will have no say in the organisation of the leagues, fixtures, and prize money.

Weekly draw - There was no winner of last week’s £75 main prize in the Pickering Town FC Weekly Draw with the numbers 20, 37 and 14. This week’s draw will double to £150. The July rollover consolation prize draw for £100 was made last week. The winning numbers were 20 and 37 and the prize will be shared by Lisa Taylor and Ken Whyton.

Cake stall - Kelly and Jade’s cake stall, raising money for Pickering Community Junior School’s new cookery cabin will he held outside the Bay Horse, market Place on Saturday from 11am to 2pm. There will also be a guess the amount of sweets in a jar and a chocolate cake raffle.

Sentimental Journey - Pickering Musical Society will present Sentimental Journey at the Kirk Theatre, Hungate, from Wednesday, October 12 to Sunday, October 16 as its war week production. Other forthcoming events at the theatre include the Howard Hebron Band on Saturday at 7.30pm, Adam Collier’s night of Yorkshire dialect on Monday, August 1 at 7.30pm and a Roy Orbison Tribute evening, also at 7.30pm. Tickets are now on sale for the various shows from the theatre box office, which is open on Tuesdays from 11am to 1pm, phone 01751 474833.

Ryedale Shopper – There will be a trip tp Scarborough tomorrow (Thursday) costing £5. Exhibition - The annual model railway exhibition organised by the Scarborough and District Railway Modellers will be held in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, on Saturday and Sunday, August 20 and 21 from 10am each day to 5pm on Saturday and 4pm on Sunday.

RILLINGTON

Prize time - Margaret King presented the whist and domino prizes at the Over Sixty's Club meeting held in the village hall. J Scarce presented the prizes at a progressive whist drive held in Woodlands Community Centre. A raffle was held at each event.

Quiz - Mike Williams will be hosting a general knowledge quiz with cash prizes in the Fleece Inn at 9pm on Friday. Admission is £2 and includes a hot supper.

Live band - High energy duo Life’s a Riot are playing at the Fleece Inn on Saturday from 9.30pm. They will be covering music from 50s and 60s, Latin Caribbean numbers, through to modern day classics.

Bingo - A prize bingo will be held in Woodlands Community Centre on Wednesday, July 20 in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Doors open at 6.45pm with eyes down at 7.15pm.

Pub outing - An outing to York Racecourse for an afternoon of racing followed by the band The Corrs, is planned for Saturday, July 23. The coach departs Fleece Inn at 10.30am and will return about 7.30pm. The fare is £9 and reservations should be made with the Fleece by phoning 01944 758464.

SEAMER

St Martin’s - The vicar, the Rev Andrew Moreland, presided and preached at the 9.30am celebration of Holy Communion. His sermon was based on the gospel reading of the story of the Good Samaritan. Jean Donovan led the prayers and assisted at the distribution of communion. Clare Firth and Sue Johnson were sidespersons and also served refreshments after the service. Enid Plevey gave a bible reading and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano.

Summer fun day - St Martin’s Church is hosting an all ages fun afternoon for the parish on Saturday between 2pm and 4pm. 2.00pm to 4.00pm. There will be traditional games including hoopla, coconut shy, balloon darts, and five balls in a bucket, chocolate tombola, teddy stall and a cake stall. Refreshments will be served and entrance to the fun day is free.

Gardeners - The Yorkshire Pelargonium and Geranium Society will meet at 2pm in Seamer & Irton Memorial Hall on Sunday, July 24 when David and Jane Newman from the Sage Gardener, Lincoln, will be the speakers. Methodist news - The service on Sunday was taken by Bruce Clark and the hymn singing was accompanied by Bruce on guitar. The vestry steward was Bob Jackman, the welcome was Margaret Harris and the collection was taken by Sheila Gray. Sheila also gave the bible reading from Isaiah and Margaret read from St Luke’s gospel. The preacher next at 10.30am is the Rev Pam Ward. Hackness Ladies Choir and Frank James will be performing at the chapel on Saturday, July 30 at 7.30pm. Entrance is £6 to include refreshments.

SHERBURN

Letters draw – Sherburn FC’s letters draw on Saturday produced D B I. As there was no winner, this week the prize fund rises to £180.

Village show- The 6th Sherburn Village Show will be held on August 14 from 2pm to 3.30pm in the Village Hall. There will be refreshments available and a raffle will be held to raise money for the Christmas tree. From 4pm onwards an after the show barbecue will be held at the East Riding Pub courtesy of Caroline and John Cooper. Show schedules are widely available in the village shops, pub and the surgery reception.

Car boot – There will be a car boot sale on the playing field on West Garth on Bank Holiday Monday August 29 from 1pm to 4pm to raise money for the village hall. Sellers will have access from 12.30pm. The entry for cars is £3 and for vans it’s £5. There will be refreshments and a tombola.

St Hilda’s Church - Morning worship was led by lay minister Barbara Grice who took as her theme, ‘I can and I will’. Sidespersons were Sue Mennel and Angela Holdsworth. Betty Flinton read the lesson and coffee afterwards was served by Lydia Mok. Eleven gardens and St Hilda’s will be open to the public on Sunday from noon to 6pm. Programmes will be available from the village hall costing £4 with children under 16 free if accompanied by an adult. Refreshments will be served in the village hall from noon to 5pm. There will be a tombola in the village hall. Proceeds will be divided between St Hilda’s Church and the North Yorkshire Air Ambulance. To round off the day, there will be a Songs of Praise in the church at 7pm. Everyone is welcome to hear and sing along with favourite hymns played by Martin Monkman on the organ and Tony Mok on his guitar. There will be a Holy Communion Service on Sunday, July 24 at 9am led by Rev Joe Kinsella.

Summer special – The next meeting of the Senior Citizen Luncheon club will be afternoon tea in the garden of Forge Villa by invitation of Chris and Sandra Cade on Wednesday, July 20 at 2.30pm. Transport in Sherburn village can be arranged by phoning Christine on 01944 711294.

Garden party - There will be a garden party at Gamekeepers Cottage, Potter Brompton, on Saturday, July 30 from 3pm to 5pm to enjoy an afternoon in the garden. It will include a cake stall, games and a prize every time tombola. The proceeds are for Sherburn Methodist Church and Action for Children.

Methodist news - Worship for Action for Children Sunday was led by Lorraine Booth. Kim Canterbury was the welcome and also read the lesson from Ecclesiastes, a time for everything. The children made clocks and worked out how time just went on and on and on as an illustration for how God can gives eternal life and how we use our time. The congregation heard about Action for Children and Sandra Cade read to Oliver’s Story which to showed how one particular family had been helped. The organist was Chris Cade who also read from 1 Corinthians about love. The parable of the Good Samaritan was read by Jean Brown. Skyla, India and Kiara took the offering for Action for Children and India prayed the children’s prayer. After worship, refreshments were enjoyed together in the hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Margaret Crofts.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - The competition held on Monday, July 4 was won by Bob and Gladys Thompson with 57.9 per cent. In joint second place with 54 per cent were Tim Johnson with Enid Watson and Margaret Lowe with Issa Eggleston.
