Acklam

Quiz night - On Thursday, July 14, and then every Thursday, there will be a quiz night at the Half Moon Inn in Acklam, starting at 8.30pm each evening. Entry is £1 per person and with the winner taking all the entry money.

Northern Soul evening - There will be Tamala Motown music with DJ Stevie G, in the Half Moon Inn, Acklam, on Saturday July 16, from 8.30pm. Everyone welcome.

Whole Ox roast - Thrussendale Farm, Acklam, is the venue for a Whole Ox Roast on Saturday, July 23, starting at 6pm. Tickets are £10 and will be available from Dot 01653 658044 and Elaine 01653 658351.

Bransdale

Church teas - Come and enjoy tea and home-made cakes while enjoying the wonderful views from St Nicholas' Church, Bransdale on Saturday, from noon to 4pm. Proceeds towards church upkeep. Bransdale is 10 miles north of Kirkbymoorside in the heart of the North York Moors. Toilet facility now in place.

Brompton-by-Sawdon

Summer fete - Planning is under way for the annual garden fete which takes place in the grounds of the Manor House on the Butts at Brompton. This year in addition to the grand duck race, teas, stalls, side shows and children’s swimming, there will be a fun dog show. This year the fete takes place on Sunday, August 7, at 2pm, with an entry charge of £1 for adults, free for children. Proceeds are mainly in aid of the church.

Church - The service on Sunday at All Saints will be Morning Prayer using the Book of Common Prayer. It will be conducted by Dr Don Jones with Terry Cartlidge playing the organ. The Benefice of Upper Derwent group (BUDS) meets next on Monday, July 11, at King's Head Cottage, Brompton, at 6.30pm, with a Faith Supper, then 7.30pm for the Bible Study and discussion. Brompton Local History Society - The new season will open on September 7 with a talk on the Middleham Jewel given by Kate Giles. This will be followed by the following programme: October 5 - Martin Arnold on Wade’s Causeway; November 2 - Jim Hall on George Dawson, Appleton-le-Moors Schoolmaster, 1841-1843; and December 7, Chris Hall, Chris Evans and Trevor Pearson will be speaking on the survey work carried out on Castle Hill, Brompton and Raincliffe Woods. There will be no meeting in January, but on February 7, Di Ford will speak about the information she has found out about the men commemorated on Brompton War Memorial. On March 1, Stephen Bassett will talk on The Anglo Saxon Origins of the Vale’s Churches and Parishes and April 5 will see Lindy and Tom Rowley speaking on Scarborough’s Maritime Heritage. In the summer two excursions are planned for May 3 and June 7. All meetings take place on the first Wednesday of the month in Brompton Village Hall, at 7.30pm, except for the excursions which are in the daytime, setting off from Brompton village square at 1pm (venues still to be confirmed). New members welcome.

Gillamoor

Fun day - A fun day takes place on Sunday at the playing field at 2pm. There will be children’s games and sports, cycle events, egg throwing, archery, tombola, cake stall, etc. Please come and join us and help raise money for playing fields maintenance.

Helmsley

Christian Aid - The total amount raised this year for Christian Aid amounted to £2,595. Thank you to everyone who made this possible by giving so generously. Grateful thanks to all the collectors in Helmsley, Pockley, Rievaulx and Sproxton who gave their time to willingly.

Kirkdale

Website - A new website - www.KirkdaleChurches - has been set up and includes information about all the churches in that benefice St Gregory’s Minster, Kirkdale; St Hilda’s, Beadlam; All Saints and St James’, Nunnington; St John the Baptist, Pockley and St Saviour’s, Harome. As well as details of services and events there is a connection to the site of The Friends of St Gregory’s Minster. Evensong, at 6pm, has started again, led by the choir. It takes place on the second Sunday of the month.

Kirkbymoorside

Moorside Club and Bar - Entertainment this week includes: Friday, July 8, bingo, at 8.30pm; Saturday, July 9, O J Reynolds, at 8.30pm. Non members welcome.

Messy Church - The next get together is on Monday, July 18, at 4pm, in the Methodist church hall. Fun worship and a shared tea.

All Saints - The summer fair takes place on Saturday, July 16, in the memorial hall, from 2pm to 4pm. There will be numerous stalls and tea/coffee and refreshments will be served. Pilgrim discipleship group meet in church today (Wednesday) at 7.30pm. Members of the junior church joined the Family Praise service in June to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday. Junior church will be on holiday from the end of July and also for the month of August.

Menzone - Guest speaker will be Andrea Brewster who will give a talk entitled Crinoids at the meeting on Monday, July 11, at The King's Head Hotel, 7pm for 7.30pm.

Normanby Fair - St Andrews is holding a concert and strawberry fair on Saturday, at 2pm, at Marton and District Village Hall. Popular local musical trio Sonore will be performing a programme which will include English Country Garden and other popular music. After the performance there will be traditional strawberry tea and various stalls selling raffle and cakes. Admission £3, children £1. Arrive 2pm prompt. Car parking available in adjacent field.

Pickering

Traction engine rally - The organisers of the recent Pickering Traction Engine Rally have decided that there will not be a rally this year in Pickering owing the Pickering Showfield not been available owing to their re-development plans making the showfield much smaller than is required for the rally. Dates and venues for other North Yorkshire venues will be announced in the near future.

Weekly draw - The first prize of £2,175 in the weekly Pickering Town FC Weekly Draw was won by Lisa c/o Wayne Taylor Monday’s draw with her winning numbers 24, 37, and 7 so this week's draw will revert to £75, to join the draw costs just £1 per entry per week, to join call at Dunning Butchers, Bridge Street, Pickering, or contact any Pickering Town FC committee members. Also in this week’s draw will the July rollover consolation prize draw for £100.

Sentimental Journey - Pickering Musical Society will present Sentimental Journey at the Kirk Theatre, Hungate, Pickering, from Wednesday, October 12, to Sunday, October 16 inclusive as their war week production and tickets are now on sale from the theatre box office, 01751 474833, which is open on Tuesday’s from 11am to 1pm. Shows in the future at Pickering’s Kirk Theatre for which tickets are now on sale include Saturday, July 16, the ever popular Howard Hebron Band will appear at 7.30pm, doors open at 7pm. On Monday, August 1, there will be a very special Night of Yorkshire Dialect by Adam Collier, which will start at 7.30pm, doors open at 7pm. On Saturday, August 27 there is a Roy Orbison tribute evening at 7.30pm, doors open at 6.30pm.

Ryedale Shopper - The July programme of visits are Thursday, July 14 to Scarborough, price £5, and Wednesday, July 28, to Whitby, price £5. The August programme of journeys are Wednesday, August 10 to Northallerton, price £6, and Thursday, August 25 to Monks Cross, York, price £5. Members are asked to make their reservation early to avoid disappointment. Meditation and Buddhism - There will be weekly talks and meditations held every Wednesday at the Friends Meeting House, Castlegate, Pickering. The programme will continue weekly until July 13. The costs for the class is £6 per class or £20 for four classes. The meditation classes offer practical solutions to everyday problems and are suitable for everyone. Classes consist of two meditations and a teaching on different themes throughout the year. There is also time for questions and refreshments.

Rillington

Action morning - Thirteen adults and two children took part in the Love Where You Live action morning collecting 25 sacks of rubbish. The parish council wish to thank the volunteers who take pride in their village and gave up their Saturday morning to take part.

Quiz - Eleven teams playing for £82 in prize money took part in Mike Williams general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn.

The winners with 52 points were the Honeymooners, second were Gary's Team (51) and third Team @ the Bar (50). The £20 jackpot was won by Don't Knows. Mike's next quiz in the Fleece will be on Friday, July 15.

Music - Rhythm and blues covers band Highway 61 are playing live at the Fleece Inn, from 9.30pm, on Saturday.

Seamer

St Martin's Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided at the 9.30am service of BCP Holy Communion. Stephen Raettig gave a reflection based on the gospel reading of the day. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano and also gave a bible reading. Judith Dean assisted with the distribution of communion, Clare Firth and Gisa Moore were sidespersons, and Lucy Haycock and Janet Lamb served refreshments. Steve Raettig preached again at the 11am service of modern worship, which he also led. Sue Grice led the intercessions and Elizabeth Bradley gave the Bible reading. She also acted as sidesperson. Becky Cremer led the sung worship (keyboard) with Tim Cremer (guitar). Jenny and Duncan Bland ran the Sunday Club and Mary Otway served refreshments after the service.

Parish summer fun day - This event takes place on Saturday, July 16, from 2pm to 4pm, at St Martin’s Church. It is for all ages and open to open from the parish of Seamer, Irton and Crossgates. There will be traditional games, including hoopla, coconut shy, balloon darts, five balls in a bucket, chocolate tombola, as well as a teddy stall and a cake stall. Refreshments will be served and entrance to the fun day is free.

Sherburn

Football Club Letters Draw - The letters drawn on Saturday, July 2 were C F Q. As there was no winner next week’s prize fund is £120.

Sports and community club - Grab yourself a team and head down to the ever popular monthly quiz night on Sunday at 8pm. For only £1 per ticket you can be entered into the envelope draw. One lucky winner scooped £170 last month. This will now be restarted at £30. A light supper will also be provided by the community club. Trilogy will be at the club on Saturday, from 9pm, head on down and join us for a great evening of live music. Late bar and everyone welcome to both events. Free entry.

Sherburn village show - The sixth Sherburn Village Show will be held on August 14, from 2pm to 3.30pm, in the village hall. Everyone welcome. There will be refreshments available and a raffle will be held to raise money for the Christmas Tree. From 4pm onwards, there will be an after-show barbecue at the East Riding Pub, courtesy of Caroline and John Cooper. Show schedules are widely available in the village shops, pub and the surgery reception.

Village hall committee - As usual on August Bank Holiday Monday, Sherburn Village Hall will be holding its annual fundraising car boot sale on the playing fields, in West Garth, from 1pm to 4pm. Sellers, from 12.30pm, cars £3 and vans £5. There will be refreshments and a tombola.

St Hilda’s Church - The next service at St Hilda’s will be Morning Worship on Sunday at 10.30am, led by Barbara Grice. On Sunday, July 17, from noon to 6pm, 11 gardens will be open to the public along with St Hilda’s Church. Programmes will be available from the village hall, costing £4, with children under 16 free if accompanied by an adult. Refreshments will be served in the village hall, from noon to 5pm, where there will also be a tombola. Proceeds will be divided between St Hilda’s Church and Yorkshire Air Ambulance. To round off the day, there will be a Songs of Praise in the church, starting at 7pm. Everyone is welcome to come along to hear and sing along with favourite hymns played by Martin Monkman on the organ and Tony Mok on his guitar.

Methodist news - Kind donations for coffee at the Tuesday Coffee Morning continue to be given to the air ambulance. Bible Fellowship met in the chapel under the leadership of Janet Magee. Sunday worship was led by Christine Fenwick and Jean Brown. People were welcomed into chapel by Christine Pickard. The reading from Colossians was by Liz Aconley. India and Kiara made dolls dressed in clothes. The collection was taken by Ray Pickard. Music for worship was provided by Chris Cade on the organ, with Tony Mok and Jean Brown playing guitars. Lorraine Booth was welcomed to the chapel to lead worship on Sunday at 10.30am.

Senior Citizen Luncheon club - The next meeting will be the afternoon tea in the garden at Forge Villa on Wednesday, July 20, at 2.30pm. Thanks to Chris and Sandra Cade for their kind invitation. Transport in Sherburn village can be arranged. Phone Christine on 711294.

Garden party - You are invited to Gamekeepers Cottage, Potter Brompton, on Saturday, July 30, from 3pm to 5pm to enjoy an afternoon in the garden. Cake stall, games, prize every time tombola. The proceeds are for Sherburn Methodist Church and Action for Children.

Thornton-le-Dale

Bridge club - The results of the competition held on Monday, June 27 were: In first place George and Pat Donnor with 69.6 per cent and in second place John Mortonson and Carole Dixon with 53.6 per cent.

Ladies Group - The group is celebrating its 40th birthday with a concert given by Allerston Aloud Choir on Friday, July 15, at 7pm, in Thornton Dale Methodist Church. Supper to follow. A collection will be taken for Ladies Group Funds. All welcome.

Westow

Summer fair - On Sunday, from 10.30am to 1pm, there is a summer fair at the cricket ground in Westow. Entry is free and there will be various stalls. The cricket club stalls include cakes and home baking, a tombola, a summer draw, together with serving teas and coffees. There will also be a junior cricket match starting at 11am for 12 years and under. Everyone is welcome. Money raised is for the cricket club. Art exhibition - The annual Westow Art Exhibition takes place on Friday August 19, Saturday August 20 and Sunday, August 21 in Westow Village Hall. There will be a wide range of art work on display and for sale, including oils, water colours, paper mache, photographs, sculptures.
