Brompton-by-Sawdon

Queen’s birthday celebrations - The village hall has spent the week bedecked with red, white and blue bunting as also were the houses and gardens of many residents in the village. It all lent a festive and celebratory feel to the week. On Wednesday, the usual Village Ventures Community Lunch turned itself into a birthday party with a cold buffet and desserts provided by all the members of all the catering teams. Jackie Gray baked a birthday cake. Mr Logue, the new headteacher at the primary school, together with three children and Mr Read their teacher, made a guest appearance after lunch and everyone listened to the children reading poems commemorating the queen. After a deserved round of applause they too joined in the cake eating. Friday night saw a quiz nigh, followed up with Open Gardens on Sunday afternoon. Cream teas at West End Farm were, as always, a popular attraction half way round. The funds raised from the entry tickets and the sale of lunches were for All Saints Church and the total accounted for so far is more than £600 while the cream teas raised more than £300 for the village hall. The organisers of all the events would like to say a big thank you to all who helped make this celebratory week successful – both helpers, supporters and all those who attended the events.

Church - The service at All Saints on Sunday will be an 11am Holy Communion conducted by the Vicar. All are welcome. After everyone had a drink and food the total was counted and at least £210 was raised for such a good cause. Hovingham Chapel members thank all who supported their 201st Chapel Anniversary led by Rev Dr Penny Worth. Two weeks before that members offered refreshments when the church organised the car boot sale in this village. Between member £1,000 was taken for the maintenance of the buildings. Several members of the local churches and chapels had a trip up to Lindisfarne. Rev Martin Allwood led members in prayers by the side of the monument to St Aidan. Members had time to tour the island and visit the castle and nearby Gertrude Jekyll garden. After heeding the warning of leaving before the tide returned, members look forward to visiting that Holy Island again.

Floral and choral festival - St Gregory’s Minster held their floral and choral festival. The flower arrangers worked wonders with spectacular arrangements to illustrate various well-known hymns; a recording of these hymns by St Gregory’s choir played in the background and refreshments were available. On Friday morning school children from Nawton Primary School and Welburn Hall School came to admire the displays, including the two displays they had made themselves, and joined in a brief service led by Reverend Sue Binks who talked to the children about the queen’s life of service and dedication throughout her reign. Friday evening saw a "preview" for sponsors and others with refreshments which was very well attended and enthusiastically acclaimed. On Sunday evening a concert was given by the choir of St Gregory’s under their director John Hastie, with organ accompaniment by visiting organist, Geoffrey Coffin of York. The audience enthusiastically joined in singing extracts from some of the hymns featured in the displays. St. Gregory’s is grateful to all the sponsors who made this event possible, especially Busy Liz’s Floral Design, who not only sourced most of the flowers, but also created one of the displays. Thanks are also due to all those who worked so hard arranging flowers, making "props", singing, providing the refreshments, acting as stewards etc. Last but not least, thanks go to Angela Heasman who planned and directed the festival. For several years Angela and her husband David have been valuable and active members of the congregation of St. Gregory’s Minster and they will be sorely missed following their move to Easingwold.

External alterations to include erection of a sun room extension to rear elevation to replace existing conservatory at Summer Tree Farm, Thornotn Lane, High Marishes, Malton. The council had no objections to this application. In respect of Listed Building consent for enlargement of internal opening to ground floor (resubmission following withdrawal of NYM/2015/0547/LB) at Rockingham House, Whitbygate. The council had no objections to this application. Councillor J Garbutt and Councillor S Bell attended a presentation by INEOS Shale. Councillor Garbutt reported on the presentation. A letter from four members of the public was read out voicing their concerns regarding fracking. A report was given on the nature and work carried out by the Beck Group and the possibility of a grant to stabilise the Beck walls nearby the Thatched Cottage. The Beck working party has carried out approximately 60 hours work in the last few weeks starting from upstream of the Thatched Cottage working on both sides of the Beck removing silt and weeds. It has increased the flow of water through the east side of the bridge and it looks much better. It now has a key to the sluice gates and this gives better control over the flow of water and helps to access the silt and weed and remove them in a safer environment.

Residents in Maltongate have complained about the water level at the bridges near Bleach Mill and Herons Close. The depth of water in this area is too deep so the he possibility of installing a new sluice gate near Lavenders is being investigated. This new sluice would then allow work safely downstream in Maltongate. The council is looking into the possibility of obtaining a grant from PARKS and NYCC so it may carry out work on the Beck walls near Thatched Cottage. The Yorkshire Water Authority informed the clerk that the work on the sewer in High Street was completed but the clerk had been informed that the road surface, in the area of the repair, had started to subside. The clerk will report this to Yorkshire Water. A member of the public wrote to the clerk commenting on what an excellent state the cemetery was in.

The gate and shed in the Bull Field were in a poor state of repair and the clerk had been asked to obtain estimates to make good these areas. Estimates have been obtained and the decision which one to accept will be decided in finance. A councillor brought up the state of the fencing near to the slipway on the Beck. The council was under the impression that the responsibility of this area should be Thornton Estate or NYCC. NYCC replaced the previous fence and therefore the council should allow them to carry out any necessary work. A member of the public enquired as to who was responsible if someone or a vehicle is hurt/damaged by large stones that have been placed on verges to prevent parking. Highways stated that the responsibility lies with the person who placed the stones. The new road sign in Farmanby Close has now been erected. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 5, at 7.30pm, in the Hill Memorial Institute.

Wombleton

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Wednesday, July 6, at 7.30pm, raising funds for hall funds.
