Churchyard service - There will be a service in the old churchyard at 3pm on Sunday to celebrate St John the Baptist. Afterwards there will be refreshments in the hall.

Ox roast – A whole ox will be roasted at Thrussendale Farm at 6pm on Saturday, July 23. Tickets cost £10 and are available by phoning either 01653 658044 or 01653 658351.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Queen’s birthday - After a short service of thanksgiving in the chapel, a celebratory tea party was held in the village hall to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday. A total of £260 was raised for the village hall.

BULMER

Nearly-new sale – There will be a nearly-new sale in the village hall on Saturday, between 10am and 1pm. It will include clothing, household goods, china, glassware, toys and much more. No electrical goods will be sold. Coffee, tea and cakes will be on sale.

Bridge club - The club meeting on Thursday, June 16 was won by Thelma Hardware and Charlie Chambers with 64.6 per cent. Second were Judith Porter and Jane Bartlett with 57.5 per cent.

CROPTON

Open garden - Jean and Dick Feaster are opening their garden at Fernwood on Sunday, July 3, from 1pm to 5pm, as part of the National Garden Scheme. Admission is £3.50, children free. Assistance dogs only. There will be plant stall and teas will be available in the village hall, raising funds for the hall. During the afternoon Thornton-le-Dale ukulele band will be playing in the hall.

HELMSLEY

AGM - Helmsley Ladies’ Luncheon Club held its annual general meeting in the Black Swan on Wednesday, July 1. It was the last meeting before the club takes a break for the summer. Members expressed their thanks to the committee for the work that they had done and to the Black Swan. The new season begins on Wednesday, October 5. Pub quiz - A family quiz is being held at The Crown Inn on Sunday, July 3 at 8.30pm. Entry is £1 per person.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Camera Club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met at the Moorside Bar & Club last Thursday for a members’ evening at which Janet and Richard Burdon showed images of their holidays in Norway. Club chairman Harry Kingman then gave an illustrated talk on his trip to the Antarctic. The next club meeting at the club is on Thursday, July 7 when other members will show and discuss their work. The club is currently holding its annual print exhibition at the Helmsley old library to Sunday, June 26, from 10am to 4.30pm each day.

Tuesday Group – The meeting on Monday, June 27 will be a walk, setting off from the Methodist Church, followed by a supper. For further details phone the group’s secretary on 01751 431648.

All Saints – The Pilgrim Discipleship group will meet in All Saints Church today (Wednesday). The monthly coffee morning will be held in church at 9.30am on Saturday, July 2. All Saints will hold its summer fair on Saturday, July 16 in the Memorial Hall.

Marie Curie - A country house car boot sale in aid of Marie Curie care and support through terminal illness will be held at Welburn Manor courtesy of Major and Mrs Shaw on Sunday from 8.30am to noon. Manor Close - A domino drive in aid of centre funds is being held today (Wednesday) at 7.30pm.

Club act – The performer at the Moor Side Bar & Club on Saturday at 8.30am is Wesley.

Bridge club - At the latest game North/South winners were Mary Mortenson and Chris Baxter with 68 per cent, Anne Smith and Graeme Matthew were runners-up with 56 per cent. Bo and Tony Simpson topped East/West with 63 per cent. Tim Johnson and Barry Smith were second with 61 per cent. Play of the week went to Caroline Pealle Clegg and Christine Field.

Ladies Fellowship – Members of the group will be going on a garden visit on Wednesday, July 13, meeting outside the library at 7pm, half an hour earlier than normal. The venue is still to be confirmed.

LEAVENING

Moveable feast - Tickets for the moveable feast on Friday are still on sale. They cost £15 and are available from Chris Botham phone 01653 658151 or Nancy Spencer. The event starts at 6.30pm with drinks, followed by starters, main course, desert and coffee.

Garage sale - The garage sale at various houses around the village on Sunday, June 19 raised £156 for the play area. The organisers wish to thank to anyone who helped make the event a success.

MARTON & NORMANBY

Vineyard visit - Members of Marton and Normanby enjoyed a trip to Ryedale Vineyards at Westow on Tuesday, June 14. They were shown around the Vineyard by Elizabeth and given a talk by her husband, Stuart, who explained about the many processes needed to produce a finished bottle of wine. Members were invited to taste samples of their produce. The branch thank the two Anns, the events secretaries, who are retiring after three years of booking speakers and arranging trips. Members are reminded that there is no meeting in July, but we are looking forward to the annual produce competitions in the village hall at Marton on Saturday, August 27. All gardening club members are invited to help and contribute exhibits on the day. More details to follow nearer the date.

NAWTON

Barbecue – The barbecue and ceilidh in the Memorial Hall on Satuday, June 11 raised £300 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Organisers Andrew and Jill Leckenby wish to thank the committee for use of the hall and Night Owl for providing the music.

Bingo - A prize bingo in aid of village hall funds will be held in the hall on Saturday July 2 at 7.30pm.

NEWTON-ON-RAWCLIFFE

Choir anniversary - The Methodist Chapel’s choir anniversary will be held by the Rev Ben Nicholson at 6.15pm on Sunday. Items will be sung by the choir and supper will be available in village hall at the close.

OSGODBY

Birthday celebrations - The community centre was packed to capacity as residents of all ages responded to the joint invitation of the parish council and the community association council to join them for a celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday. The Mayor and Mayoress of Scarborough, Coun Simon Green and his wife Valerie, were welcomed by parish council chairman Coun Christine Jones. The national anthem was sung after the Mayor’s address. A floral basket was presented to the Mayoress by Elliot and James Allon, grandsons of Christopher and Rosamaria Stubbs whose family has farmed in Osgodby since the 19th century. There was entertainment throughout the afternoon from the Midas Touch Duo, Kay and David Holliday. Bill Hyndford, leader of the ukulele group, played solo performances of several Shadows tunes. Ten-year-old Matthew Dunderdale also played three tunes he played on the ukulele. Kayleigh Worth, Bill‘s granddaughter, also showed her talents as a pop and country singer. Food was served by the hosts and a commemorative plate, painted by local artist Rosemary Bryan, was won by Joan Eatson. Commemorative mugs were among the other prizes won by Anne Lever, Lyn Catterall, Valerie Green, Margaret Taylor, Matthew Dunderdale, Christine Cunnington, George Fell, Moira Audsley, Michael Wilson, Lynn Nightingale and Lucie Wade. Each guest left with the gift of a small notebook emblazoned with the Union Jack.

Bingo - A bingo evening was run at the community centre with Janet McNamara and Malcolm Bogg as the callers, Mrs McNamara as the cashier and Margaret Rogers as the checker. Refreshments were provided by Anita Wilkinson. The raffle was run by Mrs McNamara and the flier was run by Joan Davis. People from all areas are invited to attend this social event at 7.15pm on Mondays.

PICKERING

No rally – There will be no Pickering Traction Engine Rally in the town this year because Pickering Showfield has not been available owing to re-development plans. Dates and venues for other North Yorkshire venues will be announced in the near future.

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive organised by Pickering Cricket Club held at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, tomorrow (Thursday) at 7.30pm.

Probus Club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met on Tuesday, June 14 for lunch at the Forest and Vale Hotel, under the chairmanship of Ron Murray. Local businessman John Flintoft gave a talk about the life of an ironmonger. Anyone wanting to become a member of the club should phone 01751 472879.

Fishkeepers - The next meeting of the Ryedale Aquarists Society will be held in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, on Wednesday, July 6 at 7.30pm when the guest speakers will be Ron Atherton and Paul Barron.

Weekly draw - The £2,035 main prize in last week’s Pickering Town FC Super Draw was not won with the numbers 12, 14 and 15. This week’s draw will be increased to £2,100. The July monthly consolation prize draw will be a rollover for £100, and will be drawn on Monday, July 4.

Ryedale Shopper - The last trip of this month will be to Beverley on Thursday, June 30 and costs £6. Next month’s visits are on Thursday, July 14 to Scarborough, price £5 and Wednesday, July 28 to Whitby, price £5. RILLINGTON

Outing - Members of Rillington and District YCA and the Ladies Guild had a joint outing to the training centre at Bielby for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. They were shown how 30 dogs kept there at any one time are trained and looked after before being placed with individuals to carry out their work. Members then went to Langlands Garden Centre for a spot of shopping or light refreshments before returning to the Fleece Inn for dinner. Tracey Ireland and Caroline Neuff were thanked for organising the event.

Quiz - Twelve teams playing for a total of £98 in prize money took part in Mike Williams’ general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners with 72 points were Nobody’s Perfect, second were Team @ The Bar (71) and third Honeymooners (70). A consolation prize was awarded to No Brainers. The £24 jackpot was won by 30/32’s. Mike’s next quiz at the Fleece will be on Friday, July 1.

That’s magic - Due to unforeseen circumstances the evening of magic at the Fleece Inn scheduled for Friday has had to be postponed until later in the year.

RYEDALE

Outdoor meeting – Members of Ryedale Natural History Society are meeting tonight (Wednesday) outdoors. They are gathering at 7pm at Pickering Low Carr Farm for an evening walk led by Ken Hutchinson. SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by Rev Denise Free. The vestry steward was Bob Jackman, the organist was Doreen Lawson and the welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the collection. The New Testament reading was given by Sheila Gray and was from Corinthians entitled One Body Many Parts. In her sermon Rev Free said we and the church are like a jigsaw, all different shapes, different abilities, different colours. Holy Communion was taken by the congregation. Refreshments were served after the service. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Deacon Helen Webster.

St Martin’s - The Rev Richard Firth presided at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. Parish assistant Kieron Middleton preached the sermon. Janet Lamb gave a bible reading, and Mel Wilson assisted with the distribution of communion. Clare Firth and Sue Johnson were sidespersons and Edna Burton accompanied hymns on the piano. Doreen Livesey and Elizabeth Chapman served refreshments. The funeral of Barbara Ridsdale will be held in St Martin’son Tuesday, June 28 at 11.30am.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s Church –The next service will be Holy Communion at 9am on Sunday when the gardens at Jacksons Wold will be open for charity, with teas being served by the ladies of the church. All proceeds are being donated to the church by Mr and Mrs Richard Cundall.

Letters draw - The Sherburn FC draw on Saturday produced the letters D LY. As there was no winner prize money is now £360.

Fun day – If anyone would like a stall at the August Bank Holiday fun day on Sunday August 28 they should get in touch with the Community and Sports Club. The day will feature a barbecue, drinks, crazy golf, hoopla, bouncy castle, face painting, tombola, raffle, table top sale and cake stall.

Luncheon club – Members of Senior Citizen’s Lunched Club enjoyed a lunch to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. Birthday greetings were also sung to Jean Freeman and Christine Fenwick. Pamela Wild, who worked for Queen Mary at Sandringham and Marlborough House, gave an illustrated talk. Looking at a list of the Queen’s favourite music, members sang one of her favourite hymns, Praise my Soul the King of Heaven. This was followed by Barbara Grice singing more of our Queen’s favourite music before Janet Magee led a sing-song of patriotic songs before a toast to the Queen. The team who provided the meal were Sandra, Jean, Judith, Janet, Ruth, Angela. This next meeting will be afternoon tea in the garden of Forge Villa, by invitation of Chris and Sandra Cade, on Wednesday, July 20 at 2.30pm. Methodist news - Tuesday morning coffee continues to raise funds for the Air Ambulance and the hostess was Liz Aconley. The Craft Club who made bunting for the Big Lunch last week. Family cinema club enjoyed the movie Shrek on Saturday evening. The Sunday worship was led by Michael Kitchen. The congregation were welcomed to church by Christine Pickard. The steward was Liz Aconley. Musicians were Chris Cade on the organ and Tony Mok on guitar. Janet Tebb operated the audio visual equipment. The children made Father’s Day cards and after worship refreshments were enjoyed in the hall. The Holy Communion service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Rev Denise Free.

Messy Church – A session of Messy Church will be held on Saturday in the paddock at Forge Villa, 31 St Hilda’s Street. Youngsters will meet for a picnic tea at 4.45pm. All are welcome to come along but, for safeguarding reasons, children should be accompanied by an adult.

SLINGSBY

Celebrations - Several special events took place in the village on Sunday, June 12. There was a service to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday, a time capsule was buried and after a street party and the day was rounded off with a ceilidh. The service held jointly between the Parish church and the Methodist church featured readings by both congregations involved the children of the village. The service ended with the dedication of the time capsule by the Rev John Warden. It will replace the one buried 150 years ago when the church was rebuilt, it contains Victorian coins from the first time capsule excavated last year, present day coinage, pictures of the village drawn by the local children, a drawing of the original Saxon church and a line drawing of the church today. The service ended with tea and balloons for the children. After a break the Queen’s tea party in London was watched. The village festivities resumed with a street party featuring two birthday cakes. The rain stayed away long enough for the party when everyone was moved into the village hall to dance to a ceilidh band.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge Club - The duplicate competition held on Monday, June 13 was won with 65.9 per cent by Tim Johnson and Enid Watson. Second were Ralph and Hilary Hurst with 61.1 per cent.

WESTOW

Church fete - The annual Westow Church fete is on Sunday, June 26, at 2pm, at Westow Hall. Everyone is welcome.

WOMBLETON

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Saturday, June 25 at 7.30pm raising funds for hall funds.And also on Wednesday July 6.
