ACKLAM

Sports - The annual Acklam Sports and Gymkhana will be held on Saturday. Equestrian classes start at 9am with clear round jumping and tack and turn out classes over two rings. Children’s and adult athletics start at 1pm. The Great Acklam Bake Off will be at 1.30pm. The first of two hound trails sets off at 3.30pm, with the terrier racing also on the programme. At 4pm the family dog show will take place with various classes. There is will also a raffle, with tickets available throughout the day, birds of prey and sheep shearing demonstrations. Clay shoot - On Tuesday June 7th A 25 sporting clay pigeon shoot for the Brook Beck Challenge Trophy will be held at the North Wolds Gun Club, Painsthorpe Wold, Kirby Underdale, on Tuesday, June 7. For more details, phone 01759 368314.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Village hall - The village hall management committee held a meeting on Wednesday when various forthcoming events were on the agenda. There will be a medieval weekend on Saturday and Sunday, July 30 and 31 when the hall will be used as a café. There will be a market for stalls, with a blacksmith located on the lawn in front of the building. A Queen’s 90th birthday tea party has been organised for Sunday, June 12. The annual summer feast is to be held on Saturday, September 3.

Parish council - The parish council held a meeting on Wednesday to accept the internal auditors’ report and to confirm the council will help and support the soon to be formed playing field committee.

BRANSDALE

Church teas - The St Nicholas’ Church teas season will start in the church grounds on Saturday, June 18 from noon to 4pm. Visitors enjoy homemade cakes while taking in the surrounding views. The church’s new eco-loo is also now in place. Future teas dates will be held on Saturdays - July 9, August 6 and August 27.

BULMER

Bridge club – Winners of the bridge club competition held on Thursday, May 26 were Ann and John Prest with 60.3 per cent. Michael and Val Allen were second with 58.7 per cent.

HELMSLEY

Farming lunch - About 40 working and retired farmers enjoyed a lunch prepared and served by a team of volunteers from the Farming Community Network (FCN) in the Methodist Church Hall on Friday, May 20. After lunch, Paul Dunn, a local dairy farmer, entertained guests with anecdotes and stories of his experiences. As a farming charity, FCN recognises farming can be isolating and lonely at times and through these events encourage farming people to enjoy regular social events. Donations given by the guests covered all the costs. The next FCN lunch in Helmsley is in October.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Pub quiz – There will be a family quiz at The Crown Inn on Sunday at 8.30pm. Entry is £1 per person.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Camera club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met in the Moorside Bar and Club, Shaw Drive, last Thursday for the best of year projected image competition judged by John Elvin. A total of 37 images, produced by 12 authors, made it through to the final. The winners were - portrait, I See (Martin Williams); pictorial entry, Heaven’s Above (Jim Cavanagh); natural history, Osprey Fishing (Bob Ordidge), architecture/record, Deconstructivism Example (Martin Williams). The Rickaby Cup for the best projected images was presented to Jim Cavanagh for Heaven’s Above. Martin Williams was presented with the Moorside Cup for the best aggregate score in the projected images section. The David Ireland Trophy for the best newcomer in the projected image section was shared by Lynn Wraith and Harry Pinder. The next club meeting will be the best of year print competition and AGM at the Moorside Club and Bar tomorrow (Thursday).

Library events – There will be a series of castles activities at the library today (Wednesday) from 11am to noon when youngsters will be able to build a Lego castle, design a tiara or knight’s helmet and colour cut-out castles. There will be an under the sea crafts and storytime session on Wednesday, June 8 at 2.30pm.

Concert – There will be a concert by Kirkbymoorside Band to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday in the Memorial Hall on Saturday, June 11 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 and are available from JRA Computer Services, Crown Square. Long on to www.kirkbyband.co.uk for further details.

Tuesday Group - The group’s annual general meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 14 at the Methodist Church Jubilee Room at 7.30pm. Daisy will be the leader and members will be the tea hostesses Marie Curie - The gardens at Sleighthole Dale will be open Wednesday, June 8 and Sunday, July 24 from 1pm to 6pm to raise funds for the charity. Teas will be served both days. There will be a car boot sale at Welburn Manor on Sunday, June 26 to raise funds for Marie Curie.

Hidden gardens – The town’s hidden gardens day will be held on Sunday from 11am to 5pm. Tickets and maps will be available at the In Bloom stall in the town centre. It is £5 for adults and children are free. Admission includes a cream tea.

On stage – The performer at the Moorside Club & Bar on Saturday at 8.30pm is George McIntosh.

KIRKDALE

Festival - St Gregory’s Minster is hosting a floral and choral festival from Friday, June 17 to Monday, June 20. It will feature flower arrangements to represent various hymns and the singing of those hymns by choir and the children from Nawton and Welburn schools. The church will be open from 10am to 4pm each day. Admission is £4. There will be a preview, including wine and canapés on Friday from 6pm with tickets costing £7.50. There will also be a concert, given by the choir of St Gregory’s, on Sunday, June 19 at 7pm. Admission is by ticket only. They cost £10 and includes a glass of wine. OSGODBY

Ladies Club - Moira Audsley welcomed 30 members to this month’s meeting of the Ladies Club. Local resident Malcolm Smith, who served for 25 years as a JP in Sheffield and Scarborough before retiring in 2014, spoke about his experiences and about the general work of the magistracy. He is also a novelist, writing under the pseudonym of Malcolm Bruce. The Scarborough bombardment was the background to his first novel, Thunder from the Sea, published in 2013. A raffle was run by Lesley Metcalfe, Judy Lawrence, Mary Weller and Karan Rogers. The cashier was Gill Sowman and the hostesses were Shirley Holdsworth and Carol Robinson. The next meeting will be the summer outing today (Wednesday) when members will meet at Killerby Stained Glass Centre for afternoon tea at 3pm.

Bingo - A bingo evening was run at the community centre with Moira Audsley and Janet McNamara as callers and cashiers. Margaret Rogers and Christine Hastie were the checkers. Refreshments were provided by Anita Wilkinson and Irene Barnett. The raffle was run by Mrs McNamara and the flier was run by Joan Davis.

PICKERING

Fishkeepers - Members of the Ryedale Aquarist Society had an evening visit to the aquatic retail outlet Aquatic Finatis, Northallerton. After an early supper a fun quiz was held. The next meeting of the society will be held at the Potter Hill home of Sue and David Marshall tonight (Wednesday) at 7.30pm. The Society will host its annual open show on Sunday, June 12 at Kirbymisperton Village Hall with public viewing of exhibits at 12.30pm and the auction of aquatic items starting at 12.45pm.

PEEMS - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Experimental Engineering and Model Society at the WRVS Hungate Centre today (Wednesday) at 7pm.

Farmers’ market – The monthly farmers’ market will be held in the Market Place, tomorrow (Thursday) from 8.30am.

Draw - The £1,800 main prize in last week’s Pickering Town FC Super Draw was not won with the numbers 6, 37 and 17. This week’s prize will be increased to £1,875.

Modified car show – The annual modified car show will take place on Sunday, June 19 at the Showground on the A169 from 9am to 5pm. The show will include the Yorkshire Top 20 Show Car competition. There will be an indoor specialist trade village, Stannage International stunt team will be performing, along with DJs and MCs, dancers and models. There will be club stand displays, trade stands, driver challenge obstacle course, radio controlled car arena, individual car entries, funfair, catering and licensed bar, driver challenge.

Musical Society – Sentimental Journey will be presented by Pickering Musical Society at the Kirk Theatre, Hungate, from Wednesday, October 12 to Sunday, October 16 as its war week production. A tribute show, Full Nelson, featuring the music of Willie Nelson, will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12. The Howard Hebron Band will appear at the theatre on Saturday, July 16 at 7.30pm. People can help the society by becoming a Friend of the Kirk Theatre. It costs £25 per year to help with special fundraising events throughout the year. Jazz festival - The fourth Ryedale Festival of Traditional Jazz will be held from Sunday, July 24 to Saturday, July 30. RYEDALE

Embroiderers’ Guild - The Embroiderers Guild met on Saturday at Wrelton Village Hall. Members did their own work in the morning. The speaker in the afternoon was one of the guild members, Christina Hampshire. She told of how, when she was eleven, her teacher had given each girl in the class a different queen to research, and then they had all made dolls and dressed them. This had started her love of researching for projects and creating. At secondary school she had been involved in making historical costumes for Shakespearian plays. Later she had made clothes for her own children. When living in Norfolk she did a City and Guilds embroidery correspondence course. Christina brought many items that she has made and also some of her research for various projects.

SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by Christine Fenwick and Janette Biltcliffe. The vestry steward was Bob Jackman, the organist was Doreen Lawson and the welcomer was Margaret Harris, who also gave the bible reading from Luke’s gospel The Faith of the Centurion. The welcome and opening prayers were given by Janette and the story of the centurion was acted out by Bob Jackman, Janette and Christine. The preacher on Sunday at 10.30am will be Joyce Dark.

St Martin’s - The vicar, the Rev Andrew Moreland, presided at the joint benefice communion service at St John the Baptist Church, East Ayton. The Rev Richard Firth preached the sermon which reflected on the modern day challenges of making the two churches relevant for the present day and reaching out into the community. Richard, together with Judith Dean, assisted at the distribution of communion. Val Carr gave the Bible readings and Geoff Derrington was the sidesperson. John Haslam accompanied the hymns on the organ and Steve Raettig led the sung worship. Fellowship and cake were enjoyed after the service.

SHERBURN

Community club- Sherburn Football Club’s presentation evening at the Community and Sports Club on Saturday will feature the band The Sugarlicks. There will be a late bar. Plans for the annual fun day on Sunday, August 28 are in progress. This year the club is offering anyone the opportunity to use the day for fundraising for their own organisation. There will be no charge with the only proviso that they don’t sell food or drinks or clash with any activity that anyone else has already agreed with the club. Letters draw - The letters drawn in Sherburn FC’s draw on Saturday were H R V. As there was no winner, next week’s prize fund will be £180.

Party time - There will be a Buttercup bath bombs and wax melts party At the East Riding pub on Saturday 4 at 5pm. The following Saturday the Cover Ups will be performing at the pub at 9pm.

Methodists - Donations for coffee on Tuesday mornings will be given to the air ambulance. The Sunday morning service was led by the worship leaders and the theme was the Lord’s Prayer. Janet Tebb told the story of the disciples asking Jesus how to pray and Sandra Cade did a visual demonstration of the prayer to help us understand what it means. The organist was Chris Cade, assisted by Joe Cade on the drums. After worship coffee was enjoyed in the hall. The worship team will be leading worship again on Sunday at 10.30am.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge Club - The duplicate competition held on Monday, May 23 was won with 58.9 per cent by Carole Dixon, who partnered her brother, Steve Parsons, who was a visitor to the club. In joint second place with 54.8 per cent were Audrey Shaw and Angela Smith along with George and Pat Donnor.

WEAVERTHORPE
