Bridge - The Half Moon Inn is running bridge for beginners tomorrow (Wednesday) from 7.30pm, followed by sessions every Wednesday evening.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Cake stall – The village’s branch of the WI held a recent cake stall in Towler’s Arch, Kirkbymoorside. It raised £169.80 for branch funds. The organisers wish to thank everyone who donated baking, crafts, plants and who helped to set up and run the stall.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

May market - The May market will be held on Monday, May 30. If anyone has bric-a-brac, produce or spare plants that could be sold on the village hall stall at the market, phone Di Ford on 01723 859211. There are still tables to rent at £5 if anyone would like to run their own stall. All proceeds will go to the George Bairstow Trust, the charity that donated the defibrillator to the village.

Community lunch - The next Village Ventures community lunch in the village hall will be held on Wednesday, June 18 starting at 12.30pm.

Brompton Local History Society - The first of the Brompton Local History Society's summer excursions was to Westerdale on Friday, May 6. The society was given a guided tour of the dale by Carol Wilson the author of Westerdale: the Origins and Development of a Medieval Settlement. Mrs. Wilson pointed out to us the farmsteads which are the sites of 12 medieval settlements. The afternoon ended with tea and cakes in Westerdale Village Hall. The next excursion will be to the Helmsley archaeological store on Wednesday, June 15, but final arrangements have still to be made.

Church - The service on Sunday at All Saints will be Holy Communion using the Book of Common Prayer.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Ladies Fellowship - Judy Langham opened the May meeting with a prayer about journeying through life. That was apt as the speaker, Jeff Andrews, spoke about his adventures as a travelling man. Jeff is an old friend of Ladies Fellowship and the group welcomed him and his wife, Nicola. He has entertained the Fellowship before and members have visited his little museum of the memorabilia he has accumulated over the years. Joan Baines and Carol Bancroft were the tea hostesses and, in Joan’s absence, Helen Robertshaw and Chrissie Wright stepped in to help. Kathy Evans celebrates a birthday in early June. The next meeting is on Wednesday, June 8 at 7.30pm in the library when members will be learning to “Make Do and Mend Marie Curie - The Kirkbymoorside support group will hold a cake and produce stall on the town's market day, Wednesday, May 25 in Towler’s Arch from 8.30am onwards. The gardens at Sleighthole Dale will be open Wednesday, June 8 and Sunday, July 24 from 1pm to 6pm to raise funds for the charity. Teas will be served both days. There will be fund-raising car boot sale at Welburn Manor on Sunday, June 26 Tuesday Group – Members will visit the stained glass centre in Cayton Bay on Tuesday, May 24 at 6.30pm. The group will hold its annual general meeting next month. The district quiet day at Ripon is on Tuesday, May 24.

St Catherine’s – The Kirkbymoorside support group will hold its monthly domino drive today (Wednesday) at Manor Close at 7.30pm.

Menzown – At the meeting on Monday, May 9, Tony Ives gave an illustrated talk with short clips of music about his cycling journey across the United States from North to South. He entered the US from Canada across the Niagara River at Buffalo. In total, the trip covered 2,843 miles over 35 days, with five rest days in towns of particular interest. Nashville, Memphis, Clarksdale and New Orleans were among his stops as the trip included visits to the origins of various genres of American music. Leslie Ayling gave the vote of thanks. The next Menzown meeting will be an afternoon/evening outing to Masham on Monday, June 13. This may now be fully booked. Contact Roy Bishop for further information.

Camera Club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club will hold its annual general meeting and best of year competition for projected images at its meeting tomorrow (Thursday) in the Moorside Bar and Club.

Moorside Bar & Club - Country Cousins will be providing the entertainment at the Moorside Bar and Club on Saturday, May 28 at 8.30pm. There is no act planned for this Saturday.

All Saints – The parochial church council is having a meeting in All Saints Church hurch at 9.30am on Saturday to discuss plans for a summer fair. The parish lunch is on Sunday, May 29 at the bowling club at 12.30pm. Anyone wanting to attend should add their name to the list at the back of the church.

Manor Close - The next domino drive in aid of centre funds is on Wednesday, May 25 at 7.30pm.

LEAVENING

Christian Aid - Tea and cakes will be served in the church on Saturday from 2pm until 4pm to raise money for Christian Aid.

MALTON

Bridge club - The final session of Malton Bridge Club’s handicap pairs competition was won by Alan Butterworth and Michael Wright with Tricia Pearce and Annette Jackson in second place. Mike Jackson and Rob Ashdown were third. The winners of the overall competition were Anne Avery and Madeleine Webber, ahead of Mike and Rob, with Beryl Bramall and Keith Freeman taking the third place. The club now runs individual sessions during the summer, when players may turn up without a pre-arranged partner and when guests, visitors and newcomers are welcome. PICKERING

Family cinema - The film Home was shown at the Potter Hill Cinema at Pickering Methodist Church on Saturday. The next family film, Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts movie, will be on Saturday, June 4 at 6.30 pm with doors open at 6pm. Admission is free but donations are welcome. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. There will be popcorn, ice cream, chocolate and soft drinks for sale in the interval.

Probus club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met for lunch in the Forest and Vale Hotel on Tuesday, May 10 under the chairmanship of Ron Murray. Karl Parkin the unit manager in Scarborough gave a talk and answered many questions on Community Payback – a sentence from the Courts. Club membership inquiries are welcome by phoning 01751 472879.

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive organised by Pickeirng Cricket Club at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Thursday, May 26at 7.30pm.

Fishkeepers - There will be a meeting of Ryedale Aquarist Society at the Potter Hill home of Sue and David Marshall on Wednesday, June 1 at 7.30pm. The society will be holding its annual open show and auction of aquatic items on Sunday, June 12 in Kirby Misperton Village Hall from 10am.

Musical Society – Sentimental Journey will be presented by Pickering Musical Society at the Kirk Theatre, Hungate, from Wednesday, October 12 to Sunday, October 16 as its war week production. The society is staging the Dolly Parton Tribute show at the theatre on Friday at 7.30pm and the following Friday, May 27, there will be a murder mystery night, organised by the Friends of Kirk Theatre, also at 7.30pm. Another tribute show, Full Nelson, featuring the music of Willie Nelson, will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12. People can help the society by becoming a Friend of the Kirk Theatre. It costs £25 per year to help with special fundraising events throughout the year. Friends receive exclusive discounts when buying tickets for shows, get regular newsletters, an early indication of up and coming shows, and a unique Friends’ show night. New venue - Pickering’s annual Game and Country Fair is being held at new venue, Scampston Hall, this weekend. The show will be open from 9am to 5pm and Saturday and Sunday. It will include showjumping clay shooting, gun dogs scurry, K92000 dog display team, falconry, lurcher show racing, terrier show and racing, ferret show and racing, fly casting, tractor pulling, vintage tractors, archery, long netting demonstration, gun dog demonstration, foxhounds, air rifle coaching, vehicle dealers, reptile display, vintage vehicles, food marquee, trade stands, rural craft marquee, arena displays and children’s entertainment and much more. There will be a heavy horse show on Sunday.

Coffee morning –The Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale branch of the Royal British Legion hold coffee mornings every Monday and Saturday from 10am to 12.30pm at the Legion House headquarters, Champley’s Yard.

Ryedale Shopper - The June programme of visits are on Wednesday, June 1 to Northallerton, price £6; Thursday, June 16 to Monks Cross, York, £5; and Thursday June 30 to Beverley, £6. Hardy Plant Group - The group will meet tomorrow (Thursday) in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, at 7.30pm. It will be the last chance for payment of subscriptions for the year. Suzanne Wood from Harrogate Borough Council will give a talk about attracting pollinators into the garden. Refreshments will be available after the talk. Further information will be provided for the open meeting which will be held on Friday, August 5 when the speaker will be Fergus Garrett, the head gardener and chief executive of the Great Dixter Charitable Trust, Sussex. The April to July meetings will consist of garden visits.

RILLINGTON

Murder mystery – Revenge of the Ryedale Reaper is the theme of a murder mystery dinner party in the Fleece Inn on Friday, May 27. Clothes sale - A coffee morning and clothes sale with fashions by Bon Marche will be held in Woodlands Community Centre on Thursday, May 26 at 10.30am. Admission is £1 and includes coffee and a scone. There will also be a tombola and cake stall.

SEAMER

St Martin’s - Last Sunday St Martin's welcomed the Rev Liz Kitching to lead and preach at both morning services. At the 9.30am communion service, Kate Middleton led the intercessions and assisted with the chalice, and Kieron Middleton gave the Bible reading. The hymns were accompanied by Edna Burton on the keyboard. Enid Plevey and Sue Johnson were the sidespersons and Elizabeth Chapman and Doreen Livesey served coffee between the services. At the 11am service of modern worship, Richard Fuller gave the reading and led the sung worship (guitar) with Chloe Proctor (guitar), Becky Cremer (keyboard) and John Taylor (drums). Liz Cremer ran the Sunday Club with Iain Luke. Jo Taylor was the sidesperson and Elizabeth Bradley served coffee after the service.

Flower talk – The Yorkshire Pelargonium & Geranium Society will meet on Sunday at Seamer & Irton Memorial Hall at 2pm. Pathways Project - Sue Pollard’s portrait exhibition and open garden held on May 1 raised £141 for the Sherburn Pathways Project. The group’s next aim is to make public footpaths and kissing gates more accessible for pushchair and wheelchair users. The organisers want to thank Jill Thorpe, John And Caz from the East Riding pub, Paul Mattinson, Lynda Prest, Rosemary Dawson, Edna Beilby, Malc Holder, Barbara Grice, Dan Pollard and Maxine Rackham for their donations; Elaine Bean, Sue Wiles and Debbie Bridges for raffle prizes and Gemma Skelton and Elaine Suggit for books and bric-a-brac.

Letters draw – Sherburn FC’s letters draw on Saturday produced the letters I N Z. The winner was Peter Mattinson, who received £300. Next week the prize fund will be £60.

Quiz - The quiz at the East Riding raised £143 for playschool funds. Sue Pollard’s winning quiz team donated their prize to playschool. There will be a bath bomb party at the pub on Saturday, June 4 from 5pm to 7pm.

St Hilda’s - The Sunday service at St Hilda’s Church will be Holy Communion on at 9am. The gardens at Jackson Wold will be open for the National Gardens Scheme on Sunday when the proceeds from the sale of teas will be donated by Mr and Mrs Richard Cundall to St Hilda’s Church. Sherburn open gardens day will be on Sunday, July 17 from noon to 5pm when about 12 gardens will be open to the public. There will be a Songs of Praise in the church starting at 7pm. Half of the proceeds from the open gardens will go to St Hilda’s Church and half to charity.

Archbishop’s visit - Sherburn C of E Primary School was visited by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, on Tuesday, May 10 as part of his Diocesan Pilgrimage of Prayer. The archbishop met with the children and had lunch with them.

The Big Lunch - The Big Lunch is a very simple idea from the Eden Project. The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours annually in June in a simple act of community, friendship and fun. Since starting in 2009, thousands of Big Lunches have taken place in all types of communities. In 2015, 7.29 million people took to their streets, gardens and community spaces for the seventh annual Big Lunch. This year’s Big Lunch takes place on Sunday, June 12 and the village is planning its own lunch at the Primary School from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. It is also an opportunity to celebrate our Queen’s 90th birthday. Each village organisation and business is invited to set up a stand to show just what its organisation does and put an activity if it wishes, but no fundraising as this a free event. Take a savoury picnic to share and a rug, or picnic chairs, to sit on, but do not take glass bottles or alcohol. There will be cake.

Methodist news - The Bible Fellowship met at the Chapel Hall to continue with its study of John’s Gospel. The coffee mornings have reached the target of £200 for Sherburn School religious education resources. The craft club met and enjoyed a cup of tea and cake as they busied themselves with their various crafts. The group meets on Thursdays in the hall at 1.30pm. Sunday worship took the form of Café Church and was led by Rev Denise Free and the worship team. Music was provided by Chris Cade and Ruth Heron. India Heron read the story of the First Pentecost from the book of Acts and Kiara Heron and Skyla Botham were the offertory stewards. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Margaret Crofts.

SLINGSBY

Ladies Group - Pat Elener, the chairman, welcomed 20 members and a visitor to the meeting on Tuesday, May 10. Arrangements were discussed for the June outing to Manor House Gardens and a list circulated for names of those interested in a full day outing to Saltaire in September. John Porter from the RNLI gave an illustrated talk on the work of the life-saving organisation. A new lifeboat station is being built in Scarborough which, when completed at the end of the year, will house a new £2m lifeboat. Beryl Queen gave the vote of thanks and members were then able to buy Christmas cards and badges.The next meeting will be in the Methodist schoolroom on Tuesday, July 12 at 7.15pm when there will be an opportunity to taste and hear about Pearsons soft fruit.

SNAINTON

Open gardens – The village’s annual open gardens event will be held on Sunday, June 26. Anyone wanting to open their garden, should phone churchwardens, St John Harris on 01723 850684 or Bob Williams on 01723 859130. The event starts at noon with maps available from the village hall. The cost is £3 for adults with children under 16 free. Refreshments will be available in the village hall where there will also be a cake stall, tombola and handicrafts. Plants will be available at 12a Station Road.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - Audrey Shaw and Angela Smith won the duplicate competition on Monday, May 9 with 59.4 per cent. In joint second place, with 53.1 per cent, were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell and the pairing of Margo Smith and Barbara Ewebank.

WEAVERTHORPE

In concert - Award-winning Canadian singer songwriter Ian Sherwood will be performing in the village hall on Friday, June 3 at 7.30pm. To obtain tickets, phone Trevor Thomson on 01944 738804. They are priced at £10 for adult, children under 16 £5 and a family ticket costs £25.

WESTOW

Sunday cricket - Children aged 11years and under are invited to have a go at cricket on Sundays, 10am until noon at the cricket club ground. After a bit of catching, batting and bowling practice there will be a fun game, with everyone having a go at batting, bowling and fielding. Cricket whites are not needed, just suitable footwear. WOMBLETON

Village walk – The annual village walk will be held today (Wednesday), setting off the the village hall at 6.45pm. It is a leisurely circular walk of about two miles. Entry is £5 per person and includes a supper after the walk. Accompanied children are free and dogs are welcome but must be on a short lead at all times. There will also be a raffle.
