APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Coffee morning - The annual coffee morning in aid of chapel and church funds held in the village hall raised £455. Stallholders and helpers were Lorraine Baxter, Valerie and Jean Claude Bullidon, Jill and Roy Hiatt, Lesley Jones, Katrina Lane, Margaret Leckenby, Hester Richardson, Margaret Strickland and Anne Wilson. The doorkeeper was Malcolm Leckenby.

Parish council - The annual parish meeting followed by a parish council meeting was held in the village hall last Wednesday. The parish meeting was dominated by the request from a television production team to do a programme on the village. The parish council will hold an open meeting with the production team and hold a referendum asking who is in favour or against the visit. The question of dog fouling in the East Back Lane was raise. The council will erect more signs focusing on this area. Three councillors are against fracking, one is undecided and one was unable to attend the meeting. The parish council meeting discussed the issues raised by a number of villagers concerning the dormant playing field. Advice is to be sort from Yorkshire Local Councils Association and the Fields in Trust organisation.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

May market - A coffee morning and table top sale will be held in the village on Bank Holiday Monday, May 30, from 10am until 1pm. Stalls will include craft work, produce, plants and bric-a-brac. If anyone would like to rent a table for £5 to sell their own things, phone Di Ford on 01723 859211. The overall profits from the day will go to The George Bairstow Trust, the charity that donated the defibrillator to the village.

Parish council - The next meeting of the parish council will be on Monday, May 16 starting at 7.30pm in Sawdon Village Hall. The annual parish assembly and annual general meeting of the parish council will form a part of this meeting.

Church - The May gift day has raised £900 so far. The service on Sunday, May 15 will be a 9.30am Communion, with coffee to follow. The church is looking beautiful at the moment as the floral arrangements from a wedding which took place on Saturday are still in place.

Lunch - The next Village Ventures lunch is on Wednesday, May 18 in Brompton Village Hall. Doors open at 12.15pm with food served from 12.30pm. Brompton community lunches are open to all. About 20 volunteers take turns to cook and clear up and more helpers are always welcome. Let a Village Volunteer know if you would like to help. A large team means the group can still cope even if people are ill or on holiday.

BULMER

Bridge Club – The North/South winners at the meeting on Thursday, May 5 were Thelma Hardware and Charlie Chambers with 56.5 per cent. Second were Judith Porter and Liz Cundill with 55.1 per cent. East/West winners were Jane Bartlett and Sheila Briske with 65.8 per cent, followed by Sandy and Peter Hill on 58.3 per cent.

CROPTON

Educational Trust - The Cropton Educational Trust is a long standing charitable fund established to promote the education of people under 25 who are resident in Cropton with Cawthorne. It is administered by trustees who are all Cropton residents. The trust are looking for applications for cash grants to be awarded this summer, whether as a young person or on behalf of the young person. Coffee morning - The monthly coffee morning in the village hall on Tuesday, May 3 was well attended with coffee and cake served by committee members.

HACKNESS

Spring concert - Hackness Ladies Choir’s spring concert will be held in the village hall at 7.30pm on Saturday, May 21. Tickets, priced at £5, which includes homemade refreshments, are available on the door. There will be a raffle which will be drawn during the interval. The concert will feature a wide variety of music, including arrangements of songs from the shows, ballads, folk songs and new music. Choir items will be interspersed with pieces from individual choir members, readings and comedy sketches. There will also be musical interludes by solo pianist Frank James, who became the choir’s accompanist in 2010. The choir was established in 1984 by Ernie Stear and a small number of local residents, including his daughter, who still sings with the choir. It now comprises more than 30 women. The choir raises money for charity and has, during the past 12 years, donated more than £16,500 to local charities. Ralph Earwicker, an experienced conductor and musician, has been the choir’s musical director since 2010.

The choir rehearses every Tuesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in the village hall. New and returning members are always welcome - there are no auditions and it is not necessary to be able to read music.

HELMSLEY

Luncheon club – Members of the Ladies' Luncheon Club met at the Black Swan on Wednesday, May 4 for their monthly meeting. Seven guests were welcomed before sitting down to enjoy lunch. This was followed by a presentation by Bob Smailes, who has been a fundraiser and champion of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, since its formation. He told how it has developed and grown covering all of Yorkshire and beyond. KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Soul Band - Kirkbymoorside Soul Band are playing at Kirkbymoorside Golf Club on Friday from 8pm to midnight. Tickets cost £10 and are available at Something Special Gifts, Moorside Store, Jems Hair Design and Boulton & Cooper estate agents.

Ladies Fellowship – The next meeting is in the library today (Wednesday) at 7.30pm when members will hear a talk called The Adventures of a Travelling Man.

Tuesday Group - The meeting on Tuesday, May 24 will be a visit to the stained glass centre, Cayton Bay at 6.30pm. It is the annual general meeting net month. The district quiet day at Ripon is on Tuesday, May 24 Sponsored walk – Millie-Anne (8), Annie (7) and Lilly (2) Foster raised £100 for Marie Curie Cancer Care by tackling the Daffodil Walk at Farndale. The walk was organised by the Kirkbymoorside support group and the youngsters would like to thank their sponsors.

Bridge club - The North/South winners at the latest game were were Mary Mortonson and Chris Baxter with 73.9 per cent. Graeme Matthew and Peter Small were second with 55.9 per cent. There were also clear winners at East/ West with Bo and Tony Simpson coming top with 70.6 per cent , followed by Steve Lonsdale and Robin Paige with 59.1 per cent. A well-bid small slam in hearts earned play of the week for Clarissa Napier and Christine Brett St Catherine’s - The Kirkbymoorside support group for St Catherine’s Hospice is holding two fundraising events this month. The first is the annual sponsored knit at Manor Close centre today (Wednesday) from 2pm to 4pm. The second is a domino drive at 7.30pm on Wednesday, May 18 also at the centre.

Messy Church - The group will meet in the Methodist church on Monday, May 16 from 3.45pm to 6pm.

Camera Club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met at the Moorside Bar and Club in Shaw Drive last Thursday for a lecture by Malcolm Blenkey from Saltburn entitled Northern Landscapes. There is a members’ special interest group meeting at Wrelton Village Hall tomorrow (Thursday) at 7.30pm. The next club meeting is on Thursday, May 19 at the Moorside Bar and Club is the annual general meeting and best of year competition for projected images.

Manor Close – There will be a domino drive in aid of centre funds today Wednesday) on Wednesday May 11 at 7.30pm.

MALTON

Bridge club - June Greener and Terence Boyle won the penultimate session of Malton Bridge Club’s handicap pairs competition, with Bryan Hone and Richard Hazlerigg taking second place and Rob Ashdown and Mike Jackson third. Anne Avery and Madeleine Webber hold the overall lead, closely followed by Bryan and Richard, then Beryl Bramall and Keith Freeman. The final session of the Cross-IMP pairs was won by Madge Allison and Richard Hilton ahead of Philip Mason and John Hayton, with Keith and Jane Freeman third. As a consequence, Madge and Richard just pipped Mike and Annette Jackson for the overall victory with Anne Avery and Graeme Matthew taking the third spot.

NAWTON

Spring fair – Nawton Primary Schools spring fair will be held on Saturday, May 21 from 2pm to 4pm. It will include games, donkey rides, ferret racing, a treasure hunt, bouncy castle, stalls, cream teas, a bake off and a visit from a fire engine.

PICKERING

Plant sale - Pickering and District Horticulture Society will hold its annual plant sale on Saturday, May 14 in the Market Place from 9am onwards. There will be a selection of bedding plants, vegetable plants, tomato plants, pot plants, and various other items for sale.

Model railway –The annual model railway exhibition organised by the Scarborough and District Railway Modellers will take place in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, on Saturday and Sunday, August 20 and 21. It will be open from 10am until 5pm on Saturday and until 4pm on the Sunday.

Weekly draw - The £1,575 main prize in last week’s Pickering Town FC Super Draw was not won with the numbers 40, 19 and 21. This week’s draw will be increased to £1,650. The May consolation prize draw for £50 was also held last week. There were five winners who will each receive £10 - Mrs L Bointon, Phillip Bointon, John Carr, A Cousins, and Stella Pearson-Smith, Their winning numbers were 19 and 40.

Kirk Theate - Tickets are on sale for the Pickering Musical Society’s production of the Dolly Parton Tribute show at the Kirk Theatre production on Friday, May 20 at 7.30pm. On Friday, May 27 there will be a murder mystery night organised by the Friends of Kirk Theatre, also starting at 7.30pm. to commence at 7.30pm. Entry is free. The group will meet on Thursday, May 19 in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, at 7.30pm. It will be the last chance for payment of subscriptions for the year. Suzanne Wood from Harrogate Borough Council will give a talk about attracting pollinators into the garden. Refreshments will be available after the talk. Further information will be provided for the open meeting which will be held on Friday, August 5 when the speaker will be Fergus Garrett, the head gardener and chief executive of the Great Dixter Charitable Trust, Sussex. The April to July meetings will consist of garden visits.

Beadwork – Cath Featherstone is running a beadwork day in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, on Saturday, May 21 from 10am to 4pm as part of the WEA Saturday day class programme. Aquarists - Ryedale Aquarist Society will hold its annual open show on Sunday, June 12 in Kirby Misperton Village Hall from 10am. There will be 41 classes covering the full range of tropical freshwater and coldwater fishes with YAAS rules and standards applying.

Jazz festival - The fourth Ryedale Festival of Traditional Jazz will be held from Sunday, July 24 to Saturday, July 30. The opening event will be at 2.30pm in the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul. The remaining concerts will be held in the Memorial Hall from 7.30pm. Individual tickets cost £9 each before May 31 and after that date they will cost £11.

RILLINGTON

Quiz - Eleven teams playing for £80 in prize money took part in Mike Williams’ general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn. First were 30/32's, second were Team @ the Bar and third, after a tie break with The Who and Gary's Team, were Honeymooners. The £20 jackpot question was won by Sue's Crew. Mike’s next quiz in the Fleece will be on Friday, May 20.

Hendrix tribute - Whitby-based Carl Robinson will be playing Hendrix tribute numbers and 60s rock and roll at the Fleece inn on Saturday from 9.30pm.

SEAMER

St. Martin’s - The vicar, the Rev Andrew Moreland, presided at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. In his sermon he referred to the achievement of Leicester City Football Club in winning the Premier League title against all the odds. He said this was a team effort needing everyone to be involved, not just those playing on the pitch, and the need to believe in the challenge they embarked on. He asked that the congregation unite together in a common goal of bringing the gospel alive in the parish. Janet Lamb gave a bible reading and also served refreshments at the end of the service. Clare Firth and Gisa Moore were sidespersons, Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, and Jean Donovan led the prayers and assisted with the distribution of communion. The all-age service at 11am was led by Steve Raettig, who also led the intercessions and the sung worship, along with Richard Fuller (guitar). Rev Moreland gave the talk and Chris Bray read. Jeff Fiedler was the sidesperson and Jean Fiedler served refreshments after the service.

Flower talk – The Yorkshire Pelargonium & Geranium Society meeting on Sunday, May 22 at Seamer & Irton Memorial Hall at 2pm will include a talk from David Coop, head of the technical development for the Westland Horticulture, Cambridge. Methodist news - The service on Sunday was taken by Laura McGarry. The organist was Doreen Lawson, Bob Jackman was the vestry steward and the welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the collection. Bible readings were given by Bob Jackman, who read from Acts, and Eileen Burn, who read from John’s gospel. The theme of Laura’s sermon was unity. She referred to the bible reading in which Paul and Silas were imprisoned for preaching unity and Jesus praying that we are all one. Refreshments were served after the service. The preacher next week at 10.30am is the Rev John Staton. The monthly coffee morning is on Saturday at 10.30am. There will be a raffle, tombola and cake stall.

SHERBURN

Parish council - The annual assembly for the parish of Sherburn will be held on Monday, May 16 in the Methodist Chapel Rooms at 6.30pm. All organisations in the village are invited to attend to give their report and answer any questions from residents of the parish. The meeting will be chaired by the chairman of the parish Council.

Pathways Project – Villagers involved in the Pathways Project will meet on Saturday at 10am at West Beck. Anyone attending should take a packed lunch.

Quiz – There will be a pop music quiz in aid of Sherburn Playschool at the East Riding pub on Saturday at 8.30pm. There will be a raffle and any donations of prizes would be gratefully received at the pub or leave with Boo Wharton.

St Hilda’s Church – Barbara Grice led the morning worship taking the Ascension as the theme. Tony Mok provided the music on his guitar. Sidespersons were Angela Holdsworth and Keith Usher and the lesson was read by Betty Flinton. Coffee was served at the end of the service by Lydia Mok. The next service at St Hilda’s will be Holy Communion on Sunday, May 22 at 9am.

Christian Aid – A united Christian Aid coffee morning will be held in the Chapel Hall on Tuesday, May 17 from 10am to 11.30am. There will be a cake stall available too. Christian Aid envelopes are available in Chapel or if you already have one just take it to the coffee morning.

Luncheon Club – Members of the Senior Citizen Luncheon Club will meet at 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm on Wednesday, May 18 to celebrate both a birthday party and diamond wedding anniversary. Transport within the village is available by phoning Christine on 01944 711294.

Methodist news – Members of Messy Church discovered about Pentecost, the birthday of the church, through stories, drama and songs. The celebration included a party tea with birthday cake. Activities included making stained glass windows, which are on the windows in the Link, making flame headbands and praise wristbands and windmills. The next Messy Church is an outdoor picnic in the paddock at 4.45pm on Saturday, June 25, at 31 St Hilda’s Street, by invitation of Mr and Mrs Cade. Sunday worship was led by Joyce Dark who spoke to us about Christian Unity. She told of her own travels and experiences all over the world and about how some were persecuted for their faith. The steward was Jean Brown, who also read the psalm. Christine Fenwick read the gospel lesson. Christine Pickard was the welcomer and Ray Pickard the offertory steward. The organist was Chris Cade. At the close of the service the children showed the latest addition to the books they are making. After worship, refreshments were enjoyed in the hall. The worship on Sunday will be Café Church, Pentecost Praise led by the Rev Denise Free and the worship team.

Community Club – The ban Ezee Goin’ will be performing at the club on Saturday. Entry is free and there will be a late bar.

SLINGSBY

May Day - The village was buzzing with festivity on the first Monday of May, despite the rain. It is traditionally a day of feasting in the village going back centuries. May Day celebrations were centred on dancing by the local children round the maypole. There were activities for all ages, including children’s games, tombola and Morris dancing lessons, thanks to the Mister Stray dancers and the Acorn Dancers. Adults were kept entertained with various stalls and live music from Swinton Band and Malton School Jazz Band. Pork sandwiches were also available.

STONEGRAVE

Thirteen villagers met for a social gathering in the Minster on Sunday, April 24, together with the Vicar, the Rev Sue Bond, and other members of the Anglican Parocial Church Council.CC, to discuss ways of creating community within the village and the wider parish. About 50 people live in the village although Stonegrave parish is estimated at about twice this size. The meeting recognised that one of the difficulties to be faced in creating and developing community activities was the absence of a village centre other than the parish church. Other difficulties centred on the difficulty of car parking in a village where the speed limit was perceived as too high, and on the absence of washroom facilities. After cakes and wine, courtesy of the Stonegrave Village Trustees, the party ended with everyone resolved to consider and suggest ways in which the existing community spirit and neighbourliness might be reinforced. The Vicar is eager to allow the Minster to be used for more appropriate social occasions.

WEAVERTHORPE

Jumble sale – There will be a jumble sale in the village hall on Saturday from 1pm to 2.30pm. Admission is £1 for adults, which includes a drink and a biscuit. Accompanied children are free Jumble can be donated from 11.30am but electrical items cannot be accepted. Proceeds will be divided between Weaverthorpe village organisations.

WOMBLETON

Striding out – The village walk will be held on Wednesday, May 18, setting off from the village hall at 6.45pm. It is a leisurely circular walk of about miles. Entry is £5 per person and accompanied children are free. Dogs are welcome but must be on a short lead at all times. The entry fee includes a supper after the walk. If you are not able to do the walk, you can still go to the supper. There will be a raffle. Annual meeting – The village hall’s annual general meeting is being held in the hall tomorrow (Thursday) at 7pm.

YCA – The branch of the Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association are having cake stall at Towler’s Arch, Kirkbymoorside, on Wednesday May 18 to raise funds for the branch. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 17 in the village hall at 7.30pm.
