AMPLEFORTH
Fracking meeting – About 60 people attended a fracking meeting in the village hall on St George's Day, Saturday, April 23. The event was organised by GASCON, a group of villagers from Gilling, Ampleforth, Stonegrave, Cawton, Oswaldkirk and surrounding area who are opposed to the renewal of fossil fuel exploration in the UK as represented by the application to fracture hydraulically the existing well at Kirby Misperton. Tea provided by volunteers during interval before a talk from a retired GP. North Yorkshire County Council hopes to decide on the planning application on Friday, May 20.
APPLETON-LE-MOORS
History walk - A five-mile guided history walk which was part of the North York Moors National Park Authority’s Breath of Fresh Air programme was undertaken by seven visitors. The walk was lead by Jim Hall and supported by Mike Winterflood. Tea and cakes were provided in the village hall after the walk by Helen Sheard and Maggie Tebb.
Book sales - Helen Sheard, Helen Beaumont and John Lamey manned the village’s history group stall at the History On Your Doorstep event in Pickering Library. They sold a number of the group’s newly published book A Baker’s Dozen.
BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON
Church news- The vicar, parishioners, ponies and dogs walked around the parish of All Saints on Sunday pausing at seven places along the way for a prayer, a reading and a hymn. The church organist played a keyboard for the hymns. It is hoped that a service for pets will be organised at a later date. The service on Sunday at All Saints will be Matins using the Book of Common Prayer.
FARNDALE
Quiz - A general knowledge quiz in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice, Scarborough, will be held in the Feversham Arms Inn, Church Houses, on Friday at 8pm. Mick Stanley will be the quizmaster. The maximum entry is for teams of four. It costs £2 per person and includes supper. The first prize is £30, second prize £25 and third prize £15. 
HELMSLEY
Fishy fundraiser - An evening of fish preparation and cooking held at the Arts Centre on Thursday, April 28 raised £533 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. 
Jumble success - Helmsley Royal British Legion women’s section raised £144.15 at its recent jumble sale.
KIRKBYMOORSIDE
Camera club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club will meet at the Moorside Bar and Club, Shaw Drive, tomorrow (Thursday) when Malcolm Blenkey will give an illustrated talk called Northern Landscapes
Soul Band - Kirkbymoorside Soul Band ate performing at Kirkbymoorside Golf Club on Friday, May 13 from 8pm to midnight. Tickets cost £10 and are available at Something Special Gifts, Moorside Store, Jems Hair Design and Boulton & Cooper estate agents.
Bridge club - There were ten tables in play at the latest game when Pat Hainsworth and Angela Smith won North/South with 60.9 per cent Sylvia and Mike Strickland were second on 56.9 per cent. East/West was won by Eileen and Frank Hayward with 57.3 per cent. Runners up were Sue Pearson and Steve Lonsdale with 54.1 per cent. Kath and Eddie Coward at East/West won play of the week.
Tuesday Group - The meeting on Tuesday, May 10 in the Methodist Church Jubilee room is an open meeting. The speaker will be the coxswain of the Whitby lifeboat and his talk is called Saving Lives At Sea. There will be light refreshments served at the close and a RNLI souvenir stall. The meeting starts at 7.30pm.
Menzown - Hot on the wheels of Le Tour de Yorkshire, Tony Ives will describe cycling across the USA to members of Menzown at their meeting in the King’s Head, High Market Place on Monday, May 9, 7pm for 7.30pm.
Fundraisers – The Kirkbymoorside support group for St Catherine’s Hospice will hold two fundraising events this month. The first is the annual sponsored knit at Manor Close centre from 2pm to 4pm on Wednesday, May 11. The monthly domino drive is on Wednesday May 18, also at Manor Close, at 7.30pm. 
Coffee morning - All Saints Church’ monthly coffee morning will be held in church on Saturday from 9.30am to noon. 
Messy Church – Members of Messu Church will meet in the Methodist church on Monday, May 16 from 3.45pm to 6pm. New members welcome and your first visit is free.
Live act – Cactus Jack will be providing the live enterainment at the Moorside Club and Bar on Saturday, starting at 8.30pm.
Manor Close - The next domino drive in aid of centre funds is on Wednesday, May 11 at 7.30pm.
KIRKDALE
Lecture - The 2016 Kirkdale Lecture will be given by Professor SAJ Bradley in Kirkdale Minster on Saturday immediately after the annual general meeting of the Friends of St Gregory’s Minster. The AGM begins at 2.30pm and usually last about 20 to 30 minutes. Everyone is welcome to the meeting and the lecture, for which there is no charge. Prof Bradley will talk about the history of the minster after the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII.
MALTON
Derwent Diggers - Kevin Whincup of Carpvale Fisheries gave a talk to members of Derwent Diggers Gardening Club called The Joys Of A Garden Pond’. His top tip was to brush the snow from the ice on a frozen pond but not to break the ice to keep the fish alive during the winter. The Diggers’ next meeting is in the Trinity Methodist Hall, Norton, on Monday, May 9 at 7.30pm when Paul Turner of Garth Cottage Nursery, Northallerton, will talk about growing and using culinary herbs. He will be bringing plants and a selection of oils and balsamic vinegars for sale which will be alongside the club table wherei seeds, seedlings and books can be bought. Entry is £2 for members and £3 for non-members.
MIDDLETON
Wellbeing Café – Dementia Forward hold a Welcome Wednesday Wellbeing Café in the village hall on Wednesdays from 1pm to 3pm. It is an opportunity to meet new friends and join in various activities. Refreshments are available.
NAWTON
Quiz sheet - The spring quiz sheet in aid of Nawton Primary School need to be returned to school by Saturday. The winners will be announced at the school’s spring fair on Saturday, May 21.
Bingo - The monthly prize bingo in the village hall on Saturday starts at 7.30pm. It is in aid of hall funds
NORTON
St Peter’s Church - Easter ‘chickens’ have been sold at St Peter’s Church with 528 going to various homes locally, within the UK and to Greece and Spain. All the materials and crème eggs have been donated. Local business owners have supported the sales and donations have been forthcoming. A cheque for £804.40 has been handed to the Church House treasurer and the money will go towards the renewal of the north window. During a period of 30 years about £17,500 has been raised to help refurbish the Church House.
OSGODBY
Historical aircraft - Members of the Historical Aircraft Society were welcomed to this month’s meeting at the community centre by the chairman, Malcolm Smith, who introduced the speaker Patrick Carty, a journalist. Mr Carty has travelled the world writing for magazines and other publications on matters of national security. His illustrated talk focused on his time in Russia with stories of filming Russian aircraft. At the next meeting on Tuesday, May 10, Chris Bull will speak about the wild bird life on our coastline and how aircraft deal with bird strikes. 
Bingo- A bingo evening was run at the community centre with Les Craggs as caller, Moira Audsley as cashier and Christine Hastie and Margaret Rogers as checkers. Refreshments were provided by Anita Wilkinson and Moira Draper. The raffle was run by Mrs Audsley and the flier was run by Joan Davis. People from all areas are welcome to join this informal group at 7.15pm on Mondays.

Quiz night – There will be a quiz in aid of local charities at the Bay Horse Hotel, Market Place on Sunday at 7.30pm. Entry is £4 per team of four members. There will also be a raffle.
Annual meeting – The Tuesday Group will hold its annual general meeting at the Potter Hill Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 10, followed by supper at 7.30pm.
Plant sale - The annual plant sale and coffee morning of the Hardy Plant Group of the Pickering Horticultural Society will be held on Saturday, May 14 in the WRVS Hungate Centre from 10am to 1pm. All the plants are grown by members. Tea, coffee and homemade cakes will be available. Entry is free. There will also be a meeting of the group on Thursday, May 19 when Suzanne Wood from Harrogate Borough Council will give a talk will be entitled Bees, Butterflies, and Blooms. She will explain how to attract pollinators into the garden. It will be the last chance for payment of subscriptions for the year. Further information will be provided for the open meeting which will be held on Friday, August 5. 
RBL - The Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale branch of the Royal British Legion are taking part in several major events in the coming weeks and months. The national annual conference will be held in Eastbourne on May 21 and 22. Any member wishing to attend is asked to phone the local branch secretary Mrs M Atkinson on 01751 474446 for further information. The Armed Forces Day in Scarborough will be held on Saturday, June 25 starting with a parade at noon on the sea front which will be followed by a concert featuring singer Alfie Boe at the Open Air Theatre. Mrs Atkinson would like to hear from any member wishing to attend the Festival of Remembrance in November at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Anyone wishing to be nominated for the position of chairman for the North and East Yorkshire County must be nominated by the branch to the membership support officer by 5pm on Friday, June 10.

Meditation - Weekly Buddhism talks and meditations are held every Wednesday evening at the Friends’ Meeting House, Castlegate. Game fair - Pickering’s Game and Country Fair is moving to a new venue at Scampston Hall. It will be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, from 9am to 5pm. Attractions include clay shooting, gun dogs scurry, K92000 dog display team, falconry, lurcher show racing, terrier show and racing, ferret show and racing, fly casting by Hywel Morgan, tractor pulling, vintage tractors, archery, long netting demonstration, gun dog demonstration, foxhounds, air rifle coaching, vehicle dealers, reptile display, vintage vehicles, fine food marquee, trade stands, rural craft marquee, arena displays and children’s entertainment. Events on Saturday will include showjumping and cross-country,and mounted games while Sunday’s equestrian programme includes heavy horse show, a showjumping competition and mounted games.
RILLINGTON
Quiz - Mike Williams will be hosting a general knowledge quiz with cash prizes in the Fleece Inn on Friday at 9pm. Entry is £2 per person and includes a hot supper.
Police meeting – There is an opportunity to meet the local policing team on Saturday from 10am to noon in Woodlands Community Centre. The surgery enables residents to pass on any concerns, discuss any issues and have a say in the way their community is policed. 
RYEDALE
Embroiderers’ Guild - The Embroiderers’ Guild met on Saturday at Wrelton Village Hall. In the morning the members did their own embroidery. In the afternoon Pauline Cameron gave a talk, with slides about keeping alpacas. She ended her talk with a demonstration of spinning. Alpaca wool can also be used for feltmaking.
SEAMER
St Martin's Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. His sermon was based on the gospel reading where Jesus teaches his disciples to understand both the power of the love of God. Dot Francis gave a bible reading and Jeff Fiedler assisted with the distribution of communion. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, Carol Beswick and Clare Firth were sidespersons, and Clare together with Jean Fiedler served refreshments. Reader Judith Dean led the 11am service of modern worship, and preached from John's gospel about the loving relationship between the members of the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and the possibilities offered by God of a loving relationship between the Trinity and mankind. Elizabeth Bradley read and Liz Cremer led the intercessions. The sung worship was led by Richard Fuller (guitar) with Steve Raettig (keyboard), John and Sue Grice (guitar and bass) and John Taylor (drums). Jenny Bland and Chris Bray ran the Sunday Club, Jo Taylor was the sidesperson and Elizabeth Bradley served refreshments after the service. 
Methodists - The service on Sunday was arranged by members of the church. The organist was Martyn Mellowdew, the vestry steward was John Earnshaw and the welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the collection. The theme of the service was favourite hymns by the well-known hymn composer Fred Pratt Green. Eileen Burn welcomed the congregation and gave the prayers of Adoration. The bible readings were given by Tina Greenley who read Psalm 100, Bert Blower read from St. Matthew’s gospel and Jan Blower read from the first book of Corinthians. The life of Fred Pratt Green was told during the service and how he was connected locally as his first Ministry was in the Filey circuit and as chaplain to Hunmanby Hall School where he met his wife who was a French teacher there. The prayers of Intercession were read by Amanda Clayton. Refreshments were served after the service. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Laura McGarry
SCAGGLETHORPE
Annual meeting – The parish council’s annual meeting will be held in the village hall on Tuesday, May 17 at 7.30pm. It is an opportunity for villagers to find out how the village is run and for residents to make their views known on local issues. Items to be put before the public are a report on the achievements of the past year, proposals to celebrate the Queen’s official 90th birthday and the annual financial statement.
SHERBURN
St Hilda’s Church - The worship on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by lay minister Barbara Grice.
Open gardens - The gardens at Jackson Wold will be open for the National Gardens Scheme on Sunday, May 22 when the proceeds from the sale of teas will be donated by Mr and Mrs Richard Cundall to St Hilda’s Church. Sherburn Open Gardens day will be on Sunday, July 17 from noon to 5pm when about 12 gardens will be open to the public. There will be a Songs of Praise in the church starting at 7pm. Half of the proceeds from the open gardens will go to St Hilda’s Church and half to charity.
Letters draw - Sherburn FC’s letters draw on Saturday, April 30 produced the letters D G N. As there was no winner, next week’s prize fund will be £240.
Annual assembly - The annual assembly for the parish of Sherburn will be held on Monday May 16 in the Methodist Chapel Rooms at 6.30pm. All organisations in the village are invited to attend to give their report and answer any questions from residents. The meeting will be chaired by the chairman of the parish council.
Pathways Project – People involved with the Pathways Project will meet at West Bank on Saturday, May 14 at 10am. They should take a packed lunch. 
Methodist news - The Bible Fellowship met and continued with their study of John’s Gospel under the leadership of Janet Magee. Sunday was the Chapel anniversary and the service was led by Rev Pam Ward. The welcomer was Christine Pickard and Ray Pickard and Jean Brown were the offertory stewards. Liz Aconley was the steward, Chris Cade played organ, assisted by Joe Cade on the drums. The readers were Mary Dickinson and Janet Magee. The children were busy making their Jesus books and learning how he chose ordinary people to be his disciples. After worship lunch was shared in the hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Joyce Dark. Messy Church will meet for tea at 4.45pm on Saturday to celebrate Pentecost, the birthday of the Christian Church. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Pop quiz – There will be a pop quiz in the East Riding pub on Saturday, May 14 at 8.30pm. There will be a raffle and all proceeds are for Sherburn Playschool. Any donations of prizes would be gratefully received at the East Riding or leave with Boo Wharton.

Live music - Musicians Steve Cassidy and Steve Flanagan will be playing at the White Swan Inn on Sunday, May 14 from 8.30pm.

Methodists - The Methodist Church Sunday service was led by Robert Rayner, his last service before his retirement as village pastor. He was thanked by Barbara for his work and presented with a garden voucher. Lessons were read by Marion and Pauline and John was the organist. Coffee was served after the service. Mary had organised lunch for 32 members and friends at The Buck Hotel.
Annual service – Thornton-le-Dale Ladies Group is having its annual service, led by the Rev Jackie Cray, at Wilton Church on Sunday at 6.30pm. The group is celebrating its 40th anniversary and it is hoped as many past and present members will be able to attend. An anniversary cake will be cut and served after the service.

WOMBLETON
Striding out - The village walk will take place on Wednesday, May 18. It is a leisurely circular walk of about two miles, starting at the village hall at 6.45pm. Entry is £5 per person and accompanied children are free. Dogs are welcome but must be on a short lead at all times. The entry fee includes a supper after the walk. If anyone is not able to do the walk they can still go along for the supper. There will be a raffle. Domino drive - There will be a domino drive today (Wednesday) in the village hall to raise funds for the hall which has its annual general meeting, also in the hall, on Thursday, May 12 at 7pm.
