WI REPORTS

Kirkbymoorside - Members met on Monday, April 4 in the Methodist Chapel schoolroom. After a short business meeting, 23 members and 23 visitors from other WIs and Kirkbymoorside enjoyed a presentation by Karen and Rosemary from the Tulchan Ladieswear shop in Helmsley. Despite a temporary lighting failure, Karen explained the latest ranges and Rosemary did the modelling. The evening was rounded off with a supper, provided by the Kirkbymoorside members, and a raffle for 12 prizes. The branch’s next venture is a May Day cafe in the Moorside Room from 10am to 4pm as part of the celebrations involving the tractor rally, 10k and other runs and the Tour de Yorkshire. Kirkbymoorside is already festooned with blue and yellow bicycles, bunting and window decorations. The WI has been busy knitting lots of little bunting jumpers which will go to charities after the event. The next meeting is at 7.15pm on Monday, May 16 in the chapel rooms. This year members have two resolutions to discuss and vote on. They are appropriate care for dementia patients and the avoidance of food waste and food poverty. Visitors and potential new members are always welcome.

Malton - Sharon Cawte, president of Malton WI, and branch secreyary Louise Bulmer are leading a campaign to make twiddle muffs - an adult version of a comfort blanket for dementia patients. They can be made in any wool texture colour and yarn thickness and should have ribbons, buttons and beads securely stitched in to decorate. This campaign will run until the end of August but will be an ongoing project. All twiddle muffs will be distributed to Springwood unit at Malton Hospital, local nursing homes and to anyone who would like one for a family member who is being cared for at home. Anyone can help by emailing maltonwi@hotmail.com for the pattern for knit or crochet. If people just wish to donate wool or decoration materials they will be gratefully received. The campaign ties in with this year’s annual resolution where the WI at national level will discuss lobbying parliament to increase dementia care within the NHS. For further details, phone Sharon Cawte on 07971 094098.
