Ukulele concert - The Ukulele Strummers of Thornton-le-Dale are playing in the village hall on Friday, at 7pm. Tickets are £10 and include supper.

Music night – There will be a Motown and 60s night at the Half Moon Inn on Saturday April. The band Cactus Jack will be playing at the pub on Monday. Entry is free to both evenings.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Tea, Chat & History - The final Tea, Chat & History group session for the 2015/16 season was attended by more than 30 visitors. Copies of the group’s latest publication A Baker's Dozen sold well. Madge Allison brought a collection of medieval and 18th century pottery fragments for the group to borrow. Meetings will resume on Monday, September, 5.

History Group - Jonathan Allison gave a talk called The History of Woodland Management at Appleton Mill to about 30 people. The talk was followed by a question and answer session. Tea and biscuits were served at the close.

BULMER

Bridge club - The club competition held on Thursday, April 7 was won by Robin Garbutt and Jane Bartlett with 58.8 per cent. Second were Thelma Hardware and Charlie Chambers on 56.3 per cent.

CROPTON

Coffee morning - The monthly coffee morning was held in the village hall on Tuesday, April 5 when coffee and cakes were served by committee members.

HAROME

Open day - There will be a bowls club open day at the ground on Sunday, April 24 at 2pm for anyone wanting to have a go at bowls. The club will be able to provide anyone with a set of bowls to have a try out.

HELMSLEY

Luncheon club - The Ladies’ Luncheon Club’s monthly meeting in the Black Swan Hotel on Wednesday, April 6 was attended by 41 members and two guests. Fiona Strachen of the Wilf Ward Family Trust gave an insight as to how the Yorkshire-based trust operated by providing care and resources for disadvantaged people across the whole of the region. It was set up 30 years ago by Wilf Ward and his wife, Phyllis. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 4. Anybody wanting to join the club should phone 01439 771214 for further information.

RBL - The women’s section of the Royal British Legion will hold its annual jumble sale in the Methodist Chapel School Rooms on Saturday, April 23 from 10am to noon. Admission of £1 includes tea and biscuits. There will be a raffle.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Bowls club - There will be a bowls club open day for people of all ages on Sunday, April 17 at 2pm. The following Sunday, April 24, between 10 am and 2pm there will be a coaching day with Bowls England and Yorkshire Bowling Association coaches. Anniversary - The village chapel celebrates its anniversary on Sunday at 6.15pm when the preacher will be Helen Leng. The celebrations continue on Wednesday, April 20 at 7.15pm with a musical evening given by the Farndale Singers. Supper will follow.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Rusty racquets - The tennis club is holding rusty racquet sessions on Fridays in term time from 1pm to 2pm starting on Friday, August 15. Manor Close - The next domino drive in aid of centre funds is being held at the centre today (Wednesday) at 7.30pm.

Camera club - The next meeting Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club at the Moorside Bar and Club will be an applied competition on April 21.

Annual meeting – The Memorial Hall’s annual meeting will be held on Monday, May 9, at 7pm in the Dugout.

10k race - The annual 10k race takes place on Sunday, May 1. Races start at 3pm and the closing date for entries is Friday, April 29. Entries should be made to Race Secretary, Kirkbymoorside County Primary School, Kirkbymoorside YO62 6AG. There are a variety of races. KIRKDALE

Lecture - The 2016 Kirkdale Lecture will be given by Professor S A J Bradley in Kirkdale Minster on Saturday, May 7 immediately after the annual general meeting of the Friends of St Gregory’s Minster which starts at 2.30pm. The meeting usually last about 20 to 30 minutes. All are welcome at both the meeting and the lecture, for which there is no charge. Professor Bradley will talk about the history of St Gregory’s Minster after the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII when it passed from ownership by the Augustian Newburgh Priory into lay hands, eventually to Oxford University. The university remains a patron of the church and its archives have yielded documents charting disputes about tithes, details of leases of land to local farmers, consultations on restorations in the 17th and 18th century, the provision of schools and the building of the vicarage.

Services - Evensong, led by the choir, at Kirkdale Minster has resumed now the clocks have gone forward. The service is usually on the second Sunday of the month, starting at 6pm. However, next month it will be on May 1 because to the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race is passing through the area in the morning. A new website, www.KirkdaleChurches has been set up to provide information about all the churches in the benefice - St Gregory’s Minster, Kirkdale; St Hilda’s, Beadlam; All Saints & St James’, Nunnington; St John the Baptist, Pockley and St Saviour’s, Harome.

MALTON

Bridge club - Malton Bridge Club’s latest handicap pairs session was won by Rob Ashdown and Mike Jackson, ahead of Beryl Bramall and Keith Freeman, with Madeleine Webber and Anne Avery third. Beryl and Keith now have an overall lead, with Madeleine and Anne second and Rob and Mike third. There were joint winners of last week’s session of the Cross-IMP Pairs, Anne Avery and Graeme Matthew tying with Rob Ashdown and Derek Fox. Keith Freeman and Graham Burgess were third. Mike and Annette Jackson lead overall, with Anne and Graeme in second place ahead of Madge Allison and Richard Hilton. Philip Mason was a member of the team that won the English Bridge Union’s Northern Eastern Festival Teams competition in Ilkley.

MIDDLETON

Lacemakers - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Lacemakers in the village hall on Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive held in the village hall on tomorrow (Thursday) at 7.30pm. Admission is £1.50 and includes tea, or coffee, and biscuits.

PICKERING

Hardy Plant Group - The annual plant sale and coffee morning of the Hardy Plant Group of the Pickering Horticultural Society be on Saturday, May 14 in the WRVS Hungate Centre from 10am to 1pm. Plants grown by members will be available with tea, coffee and homemade cakes. Entry is free. There will be a meeting of the group on Thursday, May 19 in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill at 7.30pm. It will be the last chance for payment of subscriptions for the year. Further information will be given about the open meeting on Friday, August 5 when the speaker will be Fergus Garrett, head gardener and chief executive of the Great Dixter Charitable Trust. The April to July meetings will be garden visits. There will also be the meeting on Thursday, May 19 when Suzanne Wood from Harrogate Borough Council and give talk called Bees, Butterflies, and Blooms - How To Attract Pollinators Into The Garden. Refreshments will be available after the talk, new members and guests are welcome.

Domino drives - There will be a domino drive organised by Pickering Town FC in the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Friday at 7.30pm. There will also be a domino drive at the same venue organised by the cricket club on Thursday, April 28 at 7.30pm.

Aquarist Society - Ryedale Aquarist Society met in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill for a workshop on the correct way to present fish at an open show. It was overseen by YAAS A-class judge David Marshall. The first round of the fishkeeper of the year competition went to a dwarf rainbowfish owned by David Gamble. A pencilfish owned by Steven Russell was second. The next open meeting will be at the Potter Hill home of Sue and David Marshall on Wednesday, June 1 at 7.30pm. The society will hold its annual open show on Sunday, June 12 in Kirbymisperton Village Hall from 10am onwards.

Charity event - Bulmer Choir, supported by the Sonore Trio, will be performing an hour-long charity concert in the United Reformed Church, Hungate, on Sunday at 3pm. Admission is free of charge but donations are invited for the Yorkshire Music Therapy Centre.

Weekly draw - The £1,275 main prize in last week’s Pickering Town FC Super Draw was not won with the numbers 21, 1 and 29. This week’s draw will be increased to £1,350. The April monthly consolation prize draw, a £100 rollover, was won by Joan Hissey and Claire Wiley who will both receive £50. Their winning numbers were 1 and 21. The May monthly consolation prize draw which will be held on Monday, May 2 will be for £50.

Concert - Ken Nichol, a guitarist from Steeleye Span, Becky Mills and singer Karen Garrett will be playing at the Memorial Hall on Friday, April 22 at 7.30pm. Ryedale Shopper - There will be a trip to Beverley, costing £6, on Thursday, April 21.

Kirk Theatre - Tickets are on sale for the Pickering Musical Society’s spring show, Calamity Jane, which will be performed at the Kirk Theatre, Hungate, from Monday, May 2 to Saturday, May 7. This is a change of date. There will be bedding, vegetable, tomato, pot plants and various other items for sale.

Tribute - Paul Taylor, who is credited with television, radio and theatre appearances, will be staging his show dedicated to legend Michael Jackson at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Saturday, April 23. His act includes live vocals and dance routines. Tickets cost £17.50 which includes food and a disco.

RILLINGTON

Quiz - Ten teams playing for £80 prize money took part in Mike Williams’ general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners were Gary's Team with 77 points, second were Trio + one and third The Who. The £20 jackpot was won by Gary's Team. Mike’s next quiz at the Fleece will be on Friday, April 22.

Helping hands - Ten residents took part in the Love Where You Live action morning collecting 16 bags of rubbish. Nine other residents were unable to take part but have pledged their time in the future. The parish council wishes to thank the volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning to take part. The next action morning is on Saturday, June 25.

Music night - York-based fiddle and guitar duo 2 Bob are playing at the Fleece Inn on Saturday from 9.30pm.

RYEDALE

Moth meeting - Members of Ryedale Natural History Society will be meeting on Tuesday, April 19 when Terry Crawford will look at the conservation of the dark bordered beauty moth at Strensall Common, near York. For more details visit www.ryenats.org.uk

SEAMER

St Martin’s - The Bishop of Hull, the Rt Rev Alison White presided at a joint service with St John the Baptist, East Ayton, when eight candidates were confirmed by the bishop. Those confirmed from St Martin’s were Louisa Emms, Hillary Elliot-Mullin, Sue Johnson, Debbie Little, Ian Luke, and Emma Luke. Also confirmed were Abby Wallace from St John the Baptist, East Ayton, and Gillian Scott from St Barnabas, Swanland, near Hull. The bishop’s sermon reminded the candidates and the congregation of the journey of faith we all travel. Geoff Derrington gave a bible reading, Judith Dean led the prayers, and Geoff Fiedler and Jo Thompson were sidespersons. Richard Fuller accompanied hymns on the organ and piano. Together with church band members John and Sue Grice and Haydon Moreland, he played during the distribution of communion. A lunch, provided by those attending, was enjoyed at the Memorial Hall after the service.

Annual meeting - Friends of Seamer Village will hold its annual meeting on Monday, April 18 in St Martin’s Church rooms, Main Street, at 7pm. Light refreshments will be served.

Methodist news - The service on Sunday was taken by Colin Davies. The organist was Doreen Lawson, the vestry steward was Bob Jackman and the welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the collection. Bob Jackman gave the bible reading from St John’s gospel - The Miraculous Catch of Fish and Jesus Reinstates Peter. In his sermon Colin asked why does God want to speak to us and what does God want us do and was based on the bible reading. Refreshments were served after the service. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Bruce Clark. There will be an afternoon tea party to celebrate the Queen’s birthday on Saturday, April 23 at 3.30pm. The price is £6. SHERBURN

St Hilda’s - Barbara Grice led morning worship, taking the letter J as the theme, making a word-wheel with 12 spokes all beginning with J and depicting the life of Jesus. Tony Mok played music on his guitar and Keith Usher read the lesson. Sidespeople were Sue Mennell and Angela Holdsworth. Coffee was served at the close of the service by Lydia Mok. Everyone was treated to buns made earlier in the week by Callum, James, Ryan and Lewis.

Letters draw - Sherburn FC’s draw on Saturday produced the letters F J N. There was one winner, John Holtby, of Sherburn, who received £420. Next week’s prize fund will be £60.

Community club - Sammi Lee will be performing at the club on Saturday from 9pm until late. Admission is free.

Quiz – There will be a quiz at the East Riding pub on Thursday, April 28 at 8.30pm. It is for teams of up to four people and entry is £1. There will be a raffle. The band Chumashu will be performing at the pub on Saturday, April 30 from 9pm.

Fashion show - The village hall is the venue for a fashion show on Friday from 2pm to 4pm. Admission is £3 which includes light refreshments. There will be a raffle and proceeds are for the Sherburn branch of the Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association.

Shoebox appeal - Work for the Samaritan’s Purse shoeboxes is underway in the village but the organisers need more wool so that its knitters can continue to make hat, scarf and mittens sets. If you have a shower curtain or thin anorak or cagoule is no longer used, they can be made into wash bags for children. Empty video cases make pencil cases and glasses cases can be decorated to make into trinket boxes for costume jewellery for older girls. Members with the appeal can recycle them and would be grateful to have donations which can be left at the chapel coffee morning on Tuesdays between 10am and 11.30am or phone Angela on 01944 710608 or Christine on 01944 711294.

Methodist news - Donations given for coffee on Tuesday mornings continue to be given to the Sherburn C of E School for religious education resources. The Holy Communion service on Sunday was led by the Rev Denise Free, assisted by Jean Brown. The welcomer was Christine Pickard and Ray Pickard was the offertory steward. The lesson was read by Elizabeth Aconley and organist was Chris Cade. Rev Denise spoke about peace and how God can bring peace to everyone. After worship refreshments were enjoyed in the hall. The 10.30am service on Sunday will be led by Janette Biltcliffe.

Film time - Family cinema will be held in the chapel hall on Saturday at 6pm. Admission is free and only a nominal charge for the tuck shop. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

SINNINGTON

Annual meeting - Sinnington People’s Guild held its annual general meeting on Tuesday, April 5. Jill Simpson and Stephen Ward chaired the meeting, which opened with a hymn, prayer and Bible reading. The secretary, treasurer and president all presented their reports. The officers elected for the coming year were president, Jill Simpson; vice-president, Stephen Ward; secretary, Molly Scaling; treasurer, Heather Nicholls; pianist, Olive Leng; outing secretary, John Lumley and reporter, Jill Simpson. Many suggestions were put forward for the next programme. The outing to Northallerton and Richmond on Wednesday, June 15, will leave Sinnington at 9.15am. The meeting closed with a hymn, grace and tea with biscuits. The next session will start on Tuesday, October 18 with a musical programme.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - The duplicate competition held on Monday, April 4 was won by Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 61.1 per cent. In second place with 57.9 per cent were Tim Johnson and Enid Watson.

WESTOW

Blue bag collection - Villagers are being asked to donate unwanted clothes, shoes, bags, belts and hats for the cricket club. All the residents have been given blue bags and asked to leave their donations outside their houses by 10.30am on Saturday. The bags will be sold by weight and the money used for the running of the cricket club. Anyone without a blue bag can use carrier bags or bin liners. Non-residents are welcome to donate items by leaving donations at the front of the village hall before 10.30am. Anyone wanting to donate items before the collection day should phone Julie Price 01653 618214 to make arrangements.

Plant stall - The annual Plant stall in aid of the village play area will be on Sunday, May 1 from 10am until all the plants are sold. The stall will be sited between the phone box and the pub. There will be an array of plants available but sales are usually brisk so it is advised to get there at the start.

WOMBLETON

Quiz - There will be a quiz to raise funds for the village hall on Friday in the hall at 7.30pm. It is for teams of no more than four. It is £2.50 per person. AGM - The annual general meeting of the village hall is on Thursday, May 12 in the hall at 7pm.
