Quartet tunes up for music festival launch

A QUARTET of talented young musicians will launch a summer programme of events with a one-off performance in Ryedale next month.

Fresh from a live slot on Classic FM, classical group, Badke, will play a full evening recital ahead of this year's Ryedale Festival, which will take place over 17 days from July 11 to July 27.

The launch concert which will take place on Saturday, April 26 but organisers of the annual summer events are keeping the lineup under wraps.

Musical director Justin Doyle said: "It's great to bring our launch concert to Norton.

"The Badke Quartet will play in St Peter's Church which provides easy access and a very good venue.

"Badke are up and coming stars and it is all happening for them - they are among the top British-based string quartets and have recently performed live on Classic FM as well as appearing on BBC Radio.

"They took first prize and the audience prize last summer in Australia's Melbourne chamber music competition. They are stunning musicians individually and play as one with fire and passion."

Speaking just before a performance in Spain, cellist Jonathan Byers, added: "We have heard many great things about the Ryedale Festival and it is wonderful to be invited to perform at their launch concert."

Ken Overton, chairman of Ryedale Festival, said: "The launch concert is radically different from what we did last year words. Instead of snippets from the whole festival, this will be a highlight in itself with three full pieces from four players who are graduates from The Royal Academy of Music and The Royal College of Music."

The summer's repertoire will include Haydn's The Creation, Handel's Water Music and Debussy's La Mer in the composer's own arrangement for piano duet, a choice reflecting this year's theme of Earth, Wind, Fire and Water.

"We chose the elements because the weather for the festival last year was so terrible - fortunately it was outshone by superb performances and we had our best year so far, " Ken said. "It was the summer that didn't happen but the festival did and was a huge hit with a growing audience which we aim to repeat this year by attracting old friends as well as many new faces, "

  • Tickets for the Badke Quartet performance at 7.30pm on Saturday April 26 are £16 and £12 for festival friends. They are available from the box office on 01751 475777 or rftboxoffice@aol.com
