THE Dalby Forest Visitor Centre near Pickering has won a top national award.
The £2.6 million centre has been dubbed one of the north's most eco-friendly structures, using wood chip power generation, solar panels, wind turbines and even recycled yoghurt cups for its plastic surfaces.
Now it has been given a top seal of approval by being declared the winner of The Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award.
The prize is sponsored by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) and the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) and forms part of the British Construction Industry Awards The centre beat off scores of other projects to claim the crown, including St Pancras Underground Station, and follows in the wake of other prestigious winners including the Tate Modern.
The award was presented by Irena Bauman from CABE to Simon Hodgson, chief executive of the Forestry Commission's Forest Enterprise Agency.
