IN response to Alan Atkinson's letter about buzz words' (April 30). Transition Towns / Villages is not a Government scheme. It is a grass-roots movement originated by Rob Hopkins. You can hear him explain the thinking behind it on www.soilassociation.org/conference

It is a movement to make communities more self-sufficient so that, if things get tricky when oil becomes prohibitive (and therefore all oil derivatives such as plastics, drugs, fertilisers etc.) the community will be prepared and therefore more resilient. It is not a movement to force anything on anyone, but is undeniably a good thing if a significant group in each town or village has done some constructive thinking in advance.
