‘Criticism of store is uninformed’

WITH reference to Ms Scott’s letter of January 4 – Even Scrooge would be appalled at charity fund.

I think Ms Scott was rather uninformed when criticising our store for “giving short shrift to a town’s special history” and implying we give little back to the local community.

The reality could not be more different.

Firstly, we are very supportive of the Dickens Society and last year donated several large framed photographs of Victorian Malton to it.

We have also been ardent supporters of events and good causes in the town, having sponsored late night shopping, donated Christmas decorations to charities and contributed to the flood defence scheme in recent years.

As well, the combined efforts of colleagues at the store saw £3,800 raised for St Catherine’s Hospice.

If local fundraisers or good causes need small prizes or donations we’re always delighted to help out, and by keeping them modest are able to help everyone who asks.

And finally, most weeks we invite a local charity into the store to pack customers’ bags for small donations, that at the end of a day often total more than £1,000 thanks to the generosity of our customers.

We’re proud to be part of a great community here and will always try to help wherever and whenever we can.

DAVID CHARLTON, General manager, Morrisons Malton
