Historic elm tree should be saved

WE are a small group in Scarborough trying to save the unique elm tree on the old St Mary’s Hospital site.

Its future is very uncertain, but being of good health and a treasure it would be a sad loss for the area.

Once the new superstore development on the old hospital site on Dean Road is completed, a part of Scarborough’s history and heritage will be gone forever.

Allowing the Weeping Wych Elm to remain where it has proudly stood since the days of the old workhouse, for at least 100 years, and to incorporate a memorial garden dedicated to the former St Mary’s Hospital would be appreciated by many who have fond memories of births there, as well as those patients who were cared for over the years. A group called the Friends of St Mary’s existed for many years and it is hoped to re-create something similar.

To consider and accommodate a memorial garden in this scheme would be an attraction, a fine gesture and greatly appreciated by residents and visitors alike, but for the moment while we can, we continue to enjoy this beautiful tree.

Anyone wishing to share any memory of the former hospital is welcome to do so and would be most appreciated.
