What Kirkbymoorside needs...

I FIND it astonishing when we are in the middle of a recession that Kirbymoorside is even considering spending such a ridiculous amount of money on converting the old library into an office/meeting facility.

We have the Memorial Hall, Dug Out and the new Community Centre, together with local hostelries, all of which provide more than adequate facilities for meetings.

It’s not as though Kirkbymoorside is the epicentre of commercial business. So why waste such an obscene amount of money mainly to facilitate an office for the town clerk?

Have our local and town council lost sight of what’s really important to residents?

Instead of wasting an inordinate amount of time discussing the merits of a bus shelter, why not move on and consider spending money on something more constructive and worthwhile.

We can’t even get the basics right. Our grass verges, footpaths and communal areas are a mess. The White Horse and Help the Aged shop are becoming eyesores. Is the soon-to-be vacant antiques shop to become another charity shop?

We need a place where our young people can meet, use computers, play pool etc. Why not create a youth centre in the Old Library? Why can’t the town council and local agencies wake up and stop expending hot air repeatedly pontificating about pointless and wasteful projects?

R Partington, Kirkbymoorside
