By Reader's letter
AS churchwarden at Slingsby Church, I read Peter Bell’s letter in the Gazette & Herald last week with interest and a great deal of agreement. However, there are two important considerations in this case of which Mr Bell is probably not aware.
The church is a listed building, and I imagine that English Heritage would be reluctant to give permission for a process which would change the appearance of the building.
In our costings for possible repair, it is apparent that by far the greatest expense would be in the providing and erection of scaffolding. The PCC would have to raise a large sum to do this, with little chance of obtaining any grant aid. Many people have donated and suported us, but I cannot imagine such support for the action Mr Bell suggests.
