Make the ramblers feel more welcome

WE are a group of ramblers that walk a lot around the villages in the Ryedale area.

Burythorpe is the only one where we’ve felt this unwelcoming feeling. We would like to know why.

Westow, Leavening and Kirkham are all so very friendly, as areWelburn, Bulmer, Castle Howard and Thixendale, but Burythorpe stands out like a sore thumb. Time for this village to move into the 21st century.

Why is Burythorpe such a hostile village? The natives are so unfriendly and do not welcome newcomers or visitors.

My family and friends have often walked through the village when we’ve been on our rambling walks.

We have yet to meet a friendly native. People who have moved here are always friendly and will stop to talk to us. They also say they feel that they shouldn’t be here.

Even the local pub doesn’t make you welcome so when all over the country on July 19 people are having street parties and getting together and talking to each other, having fun and making new friends, Burythorpe will not be.

I would like your paper to print this letter and see if there are any other villages in the Ryedale area that are more hostile than Burythorpe. I can’t think of any, and we have rambled through most of them.

Not surprised he gets unfriendly responses if he's happy to attempt to publicly humiliate a whole village!

You must have upset someone, mate.

I've been there a couple of times with no problems. The pub's great for food and I've always been warmly welcomed.

i write in response to the outragaeous allegation made here by JA Brown of Cawood. To describe the Buryhtorpe villagers is akin yo describing bambi as a man eating tiger.Nothing could be further to the truth. Perhaps JA Brown should talk to the Windmill Walkers from Hull, that visted Burythorpe and the Bay Horse on the 30th April this year and wrote "on behalf of all our members, we would like to thank the staff for their excellent service. We greatly enjoyed your hospitality and hope to visit again in the near future" these are hardly the words of group experiencing the hostility of the Burythorpe locals. Whilst it is true that there will be no street party on the 19th July, Its also true to say that the recent Burythorpe Bash at which almost the entire village and people from the surronding areas attended was a huge community sucess and raised much needed funds for the community sports club. These and many other events and letter of thanks can be produce, but the real defence of Burythorpe is the great people, the excellent pub and the genuine friendly nature of the localo people. Attacks of this nature are unfounded and unwelcome and are demoralising for the hard working and friendly people of Burythorpe, JA Brown should be ashamed of his/her comments.
