Has the world gone bananas?

I read with interest the other day that some EU legislation governing size shape etc of some vegetables and fruit is to be dropped.

This, I believe, is because most of the countries who are governed by this legislation ignore it.

However, some rules will remain, and I quote EU regulation 2257/94 as an example.

“The thickness of the transverse section of the fruit between the lateral faces and the middle, perpendicular to the longditudinal axis, must be a minimum of 27mm”.

It is comforting to know that we, as taxpayers, have the expertise of highly paid experts to protect us from rogues and charlatans who would try to sell us bananas that are not bent to the correct specification.

Has the world gone mad, or do I over-react?
