You may think that I, living in North Yorkshire, would have little interest in the HS2 railway. Not so.

During the election all parties made promises on spending. The Conservatives promised to maintain or increase spending on health, education and defence while not increasing income tax or VAT.

Where will George Osbourne find the money? A question that both chancellor and prime minister ducked throughout the campaign. Cancel or postpone HS2 and this will save at least £30bn, probably much more People throughout the land will rejoice.

Here in North Yorkshire we will look forward to better roads, schools and internet access. People of the Midlands will rejoice in the beauty and peace of their glorious countryside. Commuters will enjoy the extra time to complete their work before arrival. No one will mind a slightly longer journey time especially if money is spent on signalling improvements and rolling stock.

The great win-win solution. Go for it Mr Osbourne.
