OPEN letter to Mark Harrison, director of retailing at William Morrisons. Please can we do a deal that will help both of us?

Early one morning, the background music at Malton Morrisons was pop singing of the shriek variety – very intrusive and extremely stressful.

We spotted two teenagers who may or may not have enjoyed (or even noticed the music); the rest of the shoppers were twice or three times that age.

No doubt some bright young undergraduate managers have charts to prove that this increases Morrisons’ profits and that the majority of people enjoy it. Perhaps they include the woman in front of us who said she manages to block it out.

I doubt they include people like us who cut our list to the bare necessities to escape the racket. The blissful quiet at Lidl and Sainsbury’s enabled us to stay longer, browse and make the extra purchases you wanted us to make.

We will go back to Morrisons for our weekly shop if you will arrange for a couple of hours, a few days a week, when no music is played. I very much doubt we would be alone in appreciating this.

Surely it is worth a trial run at least?

Rob and Joan Thompson, Hovingham
