FOLLOWING on from Gill Devonshire’s letter in last week’s Gazette & Herald, I too was one of the people who came to the Pickering Community Clear Up day.
Yes, it was disappointing that so few people came, but the real point is that it should not be necessary to have these days at all. There is no excuse for littering in Pickering; there are numerous bins and these are emptied regularly by Ryedale District Council.
It is not only the cigarette wrappers, cigarette packets, cigarette butts, cans, bottles, sweet wrappers, fast-food containers and the rest; when you look at the lanes there are also the dog dirt bags just thrown in the hedges and on the verges. The laybys and verges on our roads are usually disgusting.
We talk about beautiful Ryedale, but tourists must wonder sometimes.
