WHILE Geoffrey Boycott was making his assessment in the Daily Telegraph, relating to the poor performance and state of the England cricket team and management during their exit from the World Cup, he quoted that Ian Botham (Sir) had said this was the worst England one-day side he had ever seen.

This reminds me of an incident that occurred at Terrington, told to me by Mr Willie Goodrick, that took place after a cricket match many, many years before I was born.

Mr Goodrick could not remember the opposing team, but the Terrington umpire, Mr Aron Jackson, made his assessment, he said: “I have seen something today that I haven’t seen in my life before, lads.”

When the players asked him what he had seen, his reply was: “I have just seen 22 of the very worst.”

A real morale booster?

I feel that the England management needs to listen to the wisdom and knowledge of Sir Ian and Geoffrey and appoint a manager/coach with Test match and one-day experience.

Darren Lehmann, a former Yorkshire player, has totally transformed the Australian team at both Test and one-day level.

Jason Gillespie has worked wonders in moulding a Yorkshire County Championship winning team and may their success continue, under this guidance and watchful eye, for 2015 and onwards into the future.
