JAMES STEPHENSON’S call for compulsory stunning before slaughter (Gazette & Herald, February 4) could not be more timely in the light of the scandal at the Bowood Yorkshire lamb slaughterhouse outside Thirsk.
This must never be repeated. There is nothing in the Koran that precludes stunning before slaughter, and indeed the great majority of halal meat is pre-stunned.
UKIP is fully committed to legislate for the highest welfare standards in Britain’s abattoirs and to ensure stunning before slaughter. Further, the export of live animals for slaughter abroad will be banned.
Toby Horton, Prospective UKIP Parliamentary Candidate, Thirsk and Malton
• I was appalled to read and see the video of so-called men abusing poor lambs in the halal slaughter house in Thirsk, North Yorkshire.
No matter what religion, no man has the right to abuse defenceless animals. These men should go to prison.
