LIKE Frances Harrison, I am saddened that the Saltersgate Inn is currently in such a sorry state (Gazette & Herald, January 14). It is an iconic building on one of the busiest routes through the North York Moors National Park and we are doing what we can to bring it back into use.

Unlike the Forge and the Second World War defensive wall in Helmsley however, there is no imminent threat of demolition and so the way in which are able to intervene is different. We have been working with the owner and have now taken legal action to insist that the building is tidied up and made secure.

A number of discussions have taken place with parties interested in developing the site and we are being as flexible as we can so that a solution can be found for this historic building.
