WITH regard to the black and white photograph headlined “Going Back to School” on the letters page of the Gazette & Herald on August 13.
I went to Mount St Mary’s Convent in Pickering. However, I don’t remember any of the students there at that time in the photo, because I went there from 1972 to 1976.
But I do remember the nuns. Sister Angela was the nicer one of the four. I wasn’t in her class because I started there when I was 12 years old, but I helped her look after the younger children on odd occasions.
I have no photos I’m afraid, but it certainly brought back memories for me.
Sister Cecillia was orginally a music teacher and we used to go to choir practice and compete in competitions with other schools in Whitby. There is one nun who is not mentioned and her name was Sister Mave.
I was in her class and she taught me to read because I could not read. Prior to attending Mount St Mary’s Convent I attended Lady Lumley’s, in Pickering, for a term and could not get along with the school system.
