JUST occasionally we hear about food being thrown away because of the date and wonder how can one reduce waste in supermarkets when, at the other end of the scale, Ryedale food bank helps 800 families in the first year, as reported by Karen Darley in the Gazette & Herald on July 9.

Because those food banks need constant top-ups, could the supermarkets not help out a bit?

It really gets to me when food that has not been sold and is not past its “best before” or “out-of” date and end up in skips. There is a common sense issue here, or is it only me when looking at ways of reducing waste, especially greens and vegetables. Good article, Karen.
