SOME details in a recent letter in the Gazette & Herald (June 11, 2014) regarding the cost of garden waste collections were factually incorrect.

Mark Webster suggested that the cost of the service equates to £4.50 per collection.

The cost is in fact less than £2 per collection, as clearly stated in the leaflet and accompanying literature delivered to all residents in Ryedale.

For clarification, the £27 charge covers the period June 1, 2014, to March 31, 2015, (minus three winter months of December, January and February).

This equates to collections covering seven full months.

Garden waste collections occur every fortnight (approximately two collections per month, with possibly three in some months depending on how weeks fall with your day of collection). This equals a minimum of 14 collections.

For 2014-15, the cost of the garden waste service at £27, divided by (a minimum of) 14 collections works out at just under £2 per collection.

This information is clearly set out in the terms and conditions section of the leaflet “Your garden waste service is changing”, which was posted to all residents just after Easter.

Further information about the garden waste service can be found on Ryedale District Council’s website, ryedale.gov.uk or by phoning the council on 01653 600666.
