THE huge cuts flagged up by BBC Radio York and the Gazette & Herald’s sister paper, York Press, mid-March by North Yorkshire County Council under “North Yorkshire County Council 2020” are not, apparently, to be accompanied by proper information on what will be proposed and about the consultation of the public.

Do fellow newspaper readers know the scale of professional libraries and children’s centres, health and adult care services to be closed and/or scaled down? Only one press release (by BBC Radio York) gave an idea of the scale of library proposals, saying “there may be some hostility”.

The public are then asked to email North Yorkshire County Council their views by the end of June.

Am I alone in feeling very indignant at this perfunctory consultation?

People will no doubt be puzzled as to why no information about the proposed cuts or meetings will be available, but will library staff be expected to assist the public with their computer letters to a single email address at County Hall?

Information is needed for straight, clear-thinking to some purpose and a truly democratic means of reply on such gargantuan cuts needs to be set up and now.
