IT was distressing to read of a family grieving due to the loss of their pet cat (Gazette, p3, April 9).

This is the second time recently such an incident has been reported. If I remember correctly, on the former occasion the cat’s death had been caused by poisoning, and this time it was dogs. On both occasions young children have been left traumatised by the loss of their pets.

People who keep dogs need to keep them under control. It is not right that children cannot play safely outside because there are dogs around.

Dog owners also have a responsibility to clean up after their pets. I frequently find myself having to watch where I am standing when I walk out of my home in Malton because of dog faeces on the pavement.

On one occasion it was right on my doorstep. I have reported this to the police, the council and the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
