THE Fitzwilliam Estate’s plans for 500 homes in Castle Howard Road, Malton, are actually also in Middlecave Road and in the bridleway, and a road in the vets garden, and then infilling between the two roads with high-density housing, if you examine them more carefully.

The impact of public enjoyment of the quiet road end and bridleway up to the bridge would be substantial, and would require the re-routing of the bridleway.

The Fitzwilliam Estate has said it will submit revisions in the plan in the light of public consultation, but we do not have long, as they submit a planning application next month.

I have heard a number of people say that this development will go ahead because it is the Fitzwilliam Estate, who always get their own way.

Well, hello, this is a democracy, but only if we exercise our democratic rights, lobby our councillors and our MP, and get active in opposing things we do not want.

Act now before it is too late and email hannah.andrew@gva.co.uk at the estate and tell her your views.

Ian Conlan, Malton

• I HAVE just read that our “local” landlord, the Fitzwilliam Estate, wants to build some more houses, but it is not just another housing development, it is a “vibrant extension to the town”.

Well, this town does not need a “vibrant extension”, it does not even need an extension.

If you look at an average family, where there are two adults and two children, now to me that is an extra 4,000 people, anyone, even Ryedale District Council can see that that is a lot of people for the existing infrastructure.

Can the schools really take all these new children? The dentists? Doctors?

The drainage, (check Butcher Corner in warm weather)?

And what about the roads? All the traffic has to get on to the York road to shop in town, and they do want to shop in town because we are been told we need to.

So, this plan is a no-go already.

Five hundred new homes on top of the housing developments already in Beverly Road, Scarborough Road and Castle Howard Road, but I suppose those are not vibrant extensions, they are just homes.

Well Ryedale District Council, I am just a normal person and I do not think the town can handle anymore houses, unless the Fitzwilliam Estate and the management of the Fitzwilliam Estate, who live in Malton know better?

Or is the estate just after more money because the shops they own are not making money or are unoccupied.

Mark Webster, Norton WITH reference to the “500 new homes to be built by the Fitzwilliam Estate” - as published in the Gazette & Herald on Wednesday, March 19.

Leaving aside for now the wholly dubious assertions to come that the construction of Poundbury 2 on the Castle Howard Road, Malton, will encourage and promote traditional craft skills, and ignoring the bizarre ahistoricism of a medieval market cross and other such wonders of commoditised quaintness in a 21st century luxury housing development, I notice Roddy Bushell’s indication that a name for this new and dynamic quarter of Malton has yet to be dreamt up. I wonder if, in keeping with the essence of the enterprise, it might not be most appropriately called The Sims?
