NORTH Yorkshire’s pink sheep are preparing for retirement at the end of a three-month campaign tourist chiefs have hailed a big success.

More than 5,000 people have entered the North York Moors National Park Authority’s Lost Sheep in Pink Jersey competition in which they have to find three pink sheep.

Two hundred pink sheep have been displayed as cakes, giant sculptures or painted on slates around the North York Moors, Howardian Hill, and the Yorkshire Coast since June 20.

The competition finishes on September 20. Catriona McLees, head of promotion and tourism at the authority, said: “I’m so pleased with how well this campaign has gone. People have really got behind it creating some amazing sheep out of all manner of materials.

“Feedback from those entering the competition has been very positive. Holiday makers have had great fun and have visited new and different places in their quest for more pink sheep! Locals too have been busy spotting sheep in their own villages but also on their way to work and while on days out.”
