MORE than 50 older people tucked into a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings thanks to big-hearted local groups.

The treat for older residents of East Thirsk has become an annual tradition at the community hall in Hambleton Place.

Local organisations including East Thirsk Community Association, Thirsk Rotary Club, Northallerton and District Round Table and Home Instead Senior Care teamed up to provide the treat. The Thirsk Royal British Legion Band played Christmas carols throughout the meal, encouraging everyone to sing along.

The event is an annual social event that brings older people together and helps alleviate isolation and loneliness. Association chairman Cynthia Hesmondhalgh said: “It is great that with the help of local organisations we can continue to provide this festive meal every year.

“It provides an opportunity for older people to get together and meet old friends and make new ones. Christmas can be a very lonely time for some people.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved including the army of volunteers who gave up their time and did everything from setting the tables to serving the meal and of course the washing up.”
