Parking charges review deferred

MOVES to gain a review of parking charges in Malton’s Wentworth Street and Water Lane car parks have been vetoed.

Ryedale District Council’s community services committee decided that the whole issue of the car parks was going before the authority’s overview and scrutiny committee next month, and the council was in negotiation with the Fitzwilliam Estate on the pricing of parking in the Market Place.

Marie-Ann Jackson, the corporate director, said options would be put to the committee and a decision will be made on charges before Christmas.

“We have spent a lot of time discussing the car parking strategy,” she added.

Fees and charges had been set for this financial year and decisions would be in the autumn for 2009-10, she said.

Coun Di Keal said the possible pedestrianisation of part of the Market Place should also be taken into consideration in the review, while Coun Val Arnold said any decisions on charges should await the outcome of the scrutiny committee’s investigations.

The community services committee was told that a petition had been presented to Ryedale District Council by representatives of the Car Park Action Group, which has been backed by the Gazette & Herald.

Ms Jackson said the petition urged the council not to sell Wentworth Street car park, and at the same time to review parking charges.

Coun Tommy Woodward said Malton had three car parks – two run by the council, and that of Morrisons supermarket which was free, while Pickering had no free parking.

*Today the council’s policy and resources committee will be making a decision on whether to sell part of Wentworth Street car park for development opportunities. The petitioners say it should be retained to cope with the future growth of Malton and Norton.
