12:10pm Wednesday 9th June 2010 in The Dickens Link By Karen Darley
VOLUNTEERS with a range of skills are needed to help push forward Malton’s historical links with Charles Dickens.
Work has started on the building in Chancery Lane which was the model used for Scrooge’s counting house in A Christmas Carol.
Plans include multi-media displays and interactive exhibits as well as opening up additional rooms to show life in the mid-19th century.
However, local people are now needed to help develop the building so it can be opened to the public before the end of the year Malcolm Chalk, chairman of the Charles Dickens (Malton) Society, said the aim was to raise the profile of the author’s connections with the town and in turn attract more visitors to benefit local businesses.
He said: “We are all very excited about the prospects for the future.
“We have a number of enthusiastic members, willing to offer their time and skills but we need more of the same.”
Mr Chalk added that in addition to financial support, the society was looking for help in a variety of areas.
He said: “Whatever your abilities, be they in legal, planning and financial areas or practical hand-on skill such as building, plastering, decorating or woodwork, we would welcome any offers of support – from individuals as well as local businesses – to help us reach our goals.”
