MEMBERS of the public are invited to a meeting which aims to bring Dickensian history to life in Malton.
One of the groups trying to restore links with the celebrated novelist, who was a frequent visitor to the town, is hoping to take over the lease of the building which is believed to be the inspiration for A Christmas Carol.
Currently used as a solicitor's office and storeroom on Chancery Lane, the property was said to have been the setting for Scrooge's Counting House.
Now members of the group Thrive are hosting a gathering to pave the way forward for the project this week, which could see the building transformed into a museum.
Carl Wain from the organisation said they hope to set up a sub group which would concentrate on winning grant aid for the venture, which they hope will be a future tourist attraction.
He said the lease on the premises, which is owned by Fitzwilliam Estates, expires in 2009 after which Thrive hopes to take it over.
He said: "A Christmas Carol is renowned throughout the world and there is a golden opportunity for Malton to capitalise on it to the advantage of the town's economy.
"The building will be leased until April 2009 so a business plan needs to be formed, grants have to be applied for, items for the museum need to be found and many other challenges have to be achieved.
"Members of the community are required to help move this initiative forward, so if you want to turn this dream into a reality please come to the meeting for Dickens lovers on February 14." The gathering will be held today(Thursday) at The Old Lodge Hotel in Malton starting at 7.45pm.
