Historic lane facelift set to rise to £14,000

MALTON'S historic Chancery Lane which features in Charles Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol is to get a period new look.

But Malton Town Council has been told that the scheme to renovate the quaint lane, which runs from Yorkersgate to the Market Place, has now risen in price to £14,000.

Town clerk Mike Skehan said the council would need to increase its share of the cost to £2,796, while the remainder of the funding will come from North Yorkshire County Council, Ryedale District Council, and the Fitzwilliam Estate.

The lane is alongside the building housing the accountancy practice of Ebenezer Scrooge and his clerk Bob Cratchit where Dickens is said to have set much of his legendary story.

Mr Skehan said North Yorkshire County Council highways department aims to have the work completed by the end of June after which it will maintain the area which is to be relaid in Indian stone.

Councillors welcomed the scheme saying it was a major asset to Malton's town's centre and tourist market because of the Dickens' links.
