A BUTCHER’S shop which has been run by the same family for more than 100 years is changing hands.
Thompson’s of Helmsley was set up by Frederick Thompson, grandfather of the present owner, Brian, in 1911.
Originally run from a room in the family home, the shop was built on next door. Brian joined the firm 50 years ago on leaving school.
“I did my apprenticeship and then went into partnership with my parents and later took over the shop with my wife Margaret and following her death, my daughter Hazel joined the shop,” he said.
The shop has worked closely with Helmsley-based Thomas the Baker for 25 years and also operates a local delivery service.
Brian said they has a loyal band of customers, including one lady who remembered his grandfather delivering meat with a horse and trap.
“I have enjoyed my time here but the time has come to retire and we are fortunate that the shop is being taken over by Chris Lawson,” he said.
“We would like to thank all past and present customers for their support and hope that that they will continue to support Chris.”
