Police warning over number plate thefts
11:58am Wednesday 17th October 2012 in News
THE police are trying to raise awareness among motorists in North Yorkshire about the costly consequences of having their vehicle number plates stolen.
Foiling speed cameras, avoiding parking fines, swerving congestion charges and failing to pay for fuel are all offences which are committed by criminals who use stolen plates.
Now, officers are trying to raise awareness of the consequences of having number plates stolen.
A spokesman said: “Some people may think that having their number plate stolen is no big deal but in reality it could end up hitting them in the pocket.
“Stolen number plates are often used for storming past speed cameras, and, of course, as the registered owner, the ticket will come to that person.
“It’s the same with parking tickets and if someone fills up with fuel and drives off without paying, it will be the owner’s door the police come knocking on. We urge people to take the prospect of number plate theft seriously, follow our advice, be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.”
