Unofficial car park to be shut down in Pickering

ENFORCEMENT action is set to be taken against an illegal car park in Pickering.

It has been created on the former coalyard side in Southgate, where discount supermarket company Lidl is proposing to build a store. But since August it has been used as a pay and display car park.

Gary Housden, head of planning at Ryedale District Council, said the operators submitted a planning application for a temporary 112-space park but it was rejected by planning officers on the grounds of access issues and the fact the site is on the busy junction of The Ropery, the A170 and Vivis Lane.

The county highway authority had also opposed the car park scheme.

Mr Housden said planning permission had been given for the supermarket two years ago which had still to go ahead.
