NEWLY-qualified hairdressers and beauty therapists from both Norton and Scarborough training academies gathered at Norton College last week to receive their certificates in recognition of their hard work.

The Academy Hair and Beauty Training College awarded certificates and special awards in barbering, beauty therapy and hairdressing to students completing their hair and beauty qualifications.

Student of the Year 2011/12 was awarded to Natalie Donovan, from Malton, who studied NVQ Level 2 beauty therapy at The Academy last year.

This month Natalie returned to the Academy to study the next level of her beauty therapy training. Natalie’s tutor, Claire Welburn, head of beauty therapy, commended Natalie for her hard work during the course despite coping with illness.

The Natalia Wiley Trophy, in memory of Natalia Wiley from Pickering, who studied at the Academy, was awarded to Megan Raw.

Amber Watkinson received The Attainment Award. Both students had previously been pupils of Lady Lumley’s School, Pickering.

More than 75 students aged 14-16 from Norton College, Lady Lumley’s School, Ryedale School, Malton School and Whitby Community College, study at the Scarborough and Norton Academies one day a week to achieve a hair and beauty diploma as part of their GCSE programme.

Lindsay Burr, Academy director, said: “Each year the presentation evening is an opportunity to congratulate all of our students and reward their successes.

“I would like to thank local employers, colleges and schools for choosing The Academy as their training college and also thank everyone who is part of The Academy team.”
