Pickering car park plan is blocked

PLANS for a new 112-space car park in a Ryedale town have been blocked.

Easy Park Northern Ltd wanted to use a vacant site at the corner of Vivis Lane and Hungate in Pickering as a temporary facility for parking until a new Lidl in the town is completed.

The supermarket chain hopes to start work on the store next spring and open it in the autumn, and the applicants for the car park scheme said the Southgate site – formerly a coal depot and criticised as an “eyesore” by Pickering councillors – would be used for up to 18 months.

However, the proposals have been turned down by Ryedale District Council following objections from the local parish council, as well as the Environment Agency and North Yorkshire County Council’s highways department.
